2023 New York Mets season thread

Recommended Posts

Spring Training is over, as good an excuse as any to start the regular season thread.  Predictably - Alvarez, Vientos and even Baty got sent down.  Also just as predictably, it seems like Darin Ruf still has another life here as it's down to him and Locastro for the last spot on the roster.  Might as well keep Locastro, who at least has a use but god forbid the GM admit a mistake.

Yeah I admit I’ve been paying very little attention to the Mets right now but good lord stop trying to make Ruf happen.  He sucks.

Well they did the right thing in the end, watch this guy find his swing elsewhere a la JD, Darnaud, etc lol

I'm just glad he's outta here.  He was just a complete lost cause as a Met.

Guess the old timers game got the itch back lol

He was such a beast with the Nationals.  And of course because of how things work in the Met universe, he turned into an instant Met-killer upon signing with another team.

Opening Day finally. Have to admit with the new playoff format I am starting to get the Yankee fan feel of ‘the season doesn’t begin until October’, especially in the NL where barring a full collapse every playoff team seems obvious except for the Central winner, and winning the division didn’t even work out for the Braves in the end last year though in theory the bye is still a big deal to set up your pitching.

Doesn’t help that this game runs right into Rangers-Devils, granted I don’t think seeding means anything in the NHL, but it’ll still be a pain to have divided attention - guess I’ll have to bring my earbuds for the ride up.

It's funny, I think there's two reasons that I'm largely not feeling baseball just yet:

1) The Devils being so relevant and (mostly) very fun to watch.  Usually by this time I'm really for the Mets to chase the Devils' season out of town.

2) Having invested so much emotionally in the Mets last season that after having seen them go out on SUCH a whimper, it's going to take me a while to dial that emotion back up.  I think it will take the Devils getting eliminated in the playoffs AND then I'll need a week or two to truly get back into baseball (everything blooming and more summer-ish weather will also help greatly with that transition).

It doesn't help that right now every time Lindor and Alonso do something in the regular season, I'm going to be thinking "Great, let me see it come playoff time."  I know I'll get into it in about a month but I'm a little cynical about this particular bunch being able to get it done when the stakes are higher.  But at least they should be competitive and in playoff contention.  It's not THAT often we've been able to say that about the Mets through the years.

Of course...just put on the Mets uniform and suddenly bad injury misfortune finds these players. Hopefully it is indeed something minor...must be if he is going to continue to throw. Guess no sense in rushing or pushing anyone this early

OH BOY

Can’t even make it through Opening Day without another potential disaster

Not that I was against signing Verlander but this is how it can go with players pushing 40.

Guess the Mets really did find a replacement for deGrom...right down to the health issues.  Hopefully Verlander will be OK.

Yeah allegedly Verlander himself said it's minor and a guy like him I'd tend to trust but I'd be lying if I said a 40-year old pitcher having an injury I've never heard of wasn't gonna make me nervous.

Just seems like the vibes are all off now, between the Correa disaster over the winter, the Diaz injury fiasco, none of the kids getting a sniff of a legit chance to make the team and now this happening hours before Opening Day.

Yeah, feels like "just another season in Metland".  The good news is you know Cohen will give Eppler the green light to find a replacement if that's what it takes.  But would be nice to have guys from within fill voids as needed.

The minute I left my house it was 3-0, fifteen minutes later and it’s 3-3…aye yai yai

They win, Scherzer still notches a win thanks to Nimmo, and Robertson gets the save.  So far so good lol.

Not much of a debut for deGrom…

All six hits against him were for extra bases.  Ouch.

Yep, not quite the trumpets but Sweet Home Alabama did the job (and Nimmo had a nice game to lead off his new deal lol)

We've had a lot of ugly inexcusable losses in that Marlins Stadium...was worried this was going to end up another one when they tied it 3-3, and be one of those games that really highlights our shortcomings and what we lost when Diaz went down. I'm sure that's coming, but not today. They did a nice job stabilizing things and getting the big hit when they needed it

So get this…in deGrom’s last 6 MLB starts (4 regular season + one postseason start, and this year’s opening day turn)…he’s given up at least one dinger in each of them…so 8 total HR in 6 starts…to go with an ERA over 6.00 for those games.  His K to BB ratio is just as insane as it’s ever been, but maybe he’s starting to break down?

And to be clear I don't have a THING against deGrom for leaving (he had the right to opt out and the right to go somewhere else as a result), and maybe this is just a hiccup that he'll overcome...or maybe he's just been SO damned good over the past several years that it comes as a total shock to see him EVER have a slump of any kind.

His traditional numbers over these six starts:  30.2 IP, 31 H, 21 ER, 8 HR, 6 BB, 54 K, 6.16 ERA

And yeah, it's gotten to the point where any time he doesn't seem like his typical, insanely dominant self, right away you wonder what ailment it is THIS time.

Yea this is a very very out of character stretch for him...maybe it is a sign of him either losing something permanently (he is 34 after all) or there's something wrong with his arm. The level that he was operating at was damn near impossible for a while...guess time will tell but 6 starts isn't nothing. I can't remember the last time he was this pedestrian for this long

Turns 35 in June BTW.

Yeah if he has another meh-to-rough start or two, there's going to be a lot of "What's the matter with" talk about him for sure.  It wasn't so long ago that him giving up more than a couple of earned runs was a huge deal.  He's now given up 3+ ER in five out of six starts.

Well at least the Mets won a second game in Florida so this won't be a complete disaster though it'd be nice to see Senga pitch well today.  Weird the Mets actually start the season with games on seven straight days, too bad MLB can't literally have all the games in warm-weather climates and domes in early April.
