2023 New York Mets season thread

Recommended Posts

Evan Roberts was going nuts about this on his podcast the other day and I can't say I blame him.  You don't owe other organizations more than you owe your OWN organization or fanbase, Buck.  To say you don't mind playing Baty against Patrick Corbin cause the Nats are out of it anyway but then say you gotta play your best lineup against the other playoff contenders is just not reading the room.  Your only job for the rest of 2023 - unless you're still trying to secretly kid yourself in the chances for a playoff run which might be what this is really about - is to find out as much as you can about your damn roster heading into 2024.  The other playoff teams are not your problem, Buck.

Mets have now been hit by pitches 206 times since the start of last season…the most by a good margin.

But by all means, keep doing nothing at all about it.

And the above is why people have to stop putting Steve Cohen on blast for this year.  Yes, this year's Plan A was obviously a colossal failure, end of story.  But way too many fans (Benigno tops among them) are acting like Cohen was suddenly going to stop spending money and/or not try to rectify the situation.  As far as a "salvage SOMETHING for the rest of 2023 and beyond" goes, I don't know what more this organization possibly could have done.  They unloaded aging vets and spent plenty of money to try to import legit prospects.  And with absolutely NO fvcking around to speak of, they hired the guy I think EVERY Met fan wanted to see running the baseball side of the franchise.

2023 sucked.  But it is NOT an indication of how Cohen's Mets do business, or a pure indictment of Cohen himself.

So now STFU Joe.

Got news for you, Benigno didn’t want Stearns either lol, was pretty against it in an aside at the end of one of his football podcasts - thinks he’s just another moneyball geek that never wins. Guess he doesn’t care he was a pretty significant piece of Houston’s FO before going to the Brewers.

Guess the bolded shouldn't surprise me.

Stearns may not be absolutely perfect (what baseball exec is?) but I'll happily take my chances with him.  I think he can do a very good job here.

Did the Wilpons ever get ANYTHING right?  EVER?!  If at any point they simply decided "Whatever we think we SHOULD do, let's just do the opposite!", their time as the majority owners of the Mets could've been remembered much more fondly.

Also NEVER forget that that out of three GM candidates, the Wilpons chose...Brodie fvcking Van Wagenen.  Why?  So Jeffy the Baseball Man would be free to meddle to his heart's content.  God I hate the fvcking Wilpons.

Yeah saw that.

Seems like damned near every day we see yet more proof that blowing this thing up was 100% the right call.

Verlander getting lit up:  7 HR allowed in his last three starts (20 IP).  Ouch.  Two of those teams are the Yankees (who have been VERY meh offensively this year), and...Oakland.  OAKLAND!

I was gonna come here and slag Brodie for the PCA trade, till I realized it was Zach Scott (or maybe Sandy if Scott was already on leave by then, I don't even remember)...man we've had a lot of meh, iffy GM's in a row here.  I'm not even sure that streak ends with Stearns since it seems he's committed to keeping Billy as the GM, but hopefully Billy will be better executing Stearns' vision plan than his own.

More mixed results from Verlander, in his latest Astros stint...for the month of September, the Astros have gone 1-3 in his starts, and he's put up a 5.19 ERA and has an OPS against of .818.

I was all for dumping several of the high-priced vets as it was becoming very obvious that it wasn't going to happen for the 2023 New York Mets, but more and more man does not trying to fortify that group with a couple of "right now" moves look like the absolute correct decision.  Scherzer is done, Verlander's been up-and-down as an Astro, Robertson has been not been good with the Marlins (a 1.92 WHIP since going there)...Canha's been hitting plenty for the Brewers, sure, but even if he was doing that here, would that be enough to push the Mets into contention?  No.

I know Pete’s HR and RBI totals are plenty good this year, but good lord, he’s hitting .205 since April 22.  At some point fans have to stop overlooking that fact when they keep calling him a “superstar” and “potentially the best Met hitter ever”.  This season he’s been very Kingman-like…better of course, but not THAT much.

And even with all of the dingers, his OPS is only slightly better than Nimmo’s (.830 to .827).

I really hope this year was an anomaly…because it’s really hard to count on someone who has a big game (or a couple of them in a row), but is nowhere to be found the rest of the time.  A “great” hitter actually needs to HIT.

Tylor Megill's WHIP this year:  1.622

David Peterson' WHIP this year:  1.596

I know every now and then one of them turns in a good start, or even a few decent ones in a row, but can the Mets just be done with these guys already, once the season is over?  I get why they got extra looks this year (especially once Verlander and Scherzer were out of the mix), but they're just nothing to ever get excited about.

Lindor about to get to 30-30 (one HR away), talk about stat padding though to be fair I remember when 30-30 used to be a big deal, and HoJo doing it three times in the late '80's/early '90's gets a bit underappreciated because the Met teams had started to fray at the edges by then but 30-30 doesn't seem like a big deal when Acuna and the Braves are breaking baseball offense right now.

And right on cue Lindor hits his third HR of the doubleheader to get to 30-30...congrats I guess?  At least he's still playing in a lost cause.

This is all aggravating as fvck because both Lindor AND Alonso were NOWHERE to be found when the Mets really needed them.  Their glamour numbers are as cosmetic as it can possibly get.

LOL what a way to end the season with a late postponement on Tuesday then last night's game getting postponed in the top of the ninth inning after the Mets blew a lead with playoff implications.

And what the hell are the Marlins doing in a playoff hunt anyway?  The Braves and Phillies behemoths are bad enough, now we have to deal with the freaking Marlins being Tampa South?
