Im in the camp of not wanting to waste any more prime years of any of our stars and were lucky to be able to think that way. The window of tossing away seasons is over.. if there’s a reasonable option to go get a star goalie you go get him. Okay, fair enough re: Schmid. I'm not suggesting to pay him 9 million dollars. You are suggesting to pay CH that. CH is not being reasonable. He and his agent are very aware of the internal cap that Fitz works off of. I don't think I would ever ever pay a goalie Vasy money. I will grant you that Hellebuyck has been a incredibly reliably good goaltender and incredibly consistent (in the regular season), but he put up Vanecek numbers in the playoffs as others have mentioned. I would suggest simply looking at the highest paid goaltenders in the league right now and tell me that any of them are worth their current contracts. Even Vasy pushed it this year with his playoff performance. It reeks of someone trying to get paid and then once we sign him. He'll have one good year, maybe two and then he's a liability with that contract, similar to Bobrovsky in FL. We don't need to rush any of this. Goalies are not the pillar of consistency they once were, but that's where I'll leave it as well. Edited June 28, 2023 by RizzMB30

Definitely understand the concern and feel that, i never said we should pay him 9M i said that if theres a reasonable way to get him that they should go out and do it. Some players buy in, seems like the rumors are pointing towards Timo doing just that, helle has voiced that hes interested in coming here specifically which we are not used to be a destination. If you can make a move for him and end up extending him to a reasonable term and price i dont see why anyone wouldnt do that.

If he was serious about coming to NJ and "joining a winner", he would take less money if he "wants to win" as badly as he says. I don't buy it. If Hellebuyck would take 7.5-8, I would be more inclined to believe him. Even he were to take that money for 6-8 years, it's possible to fit him in. I don't think the percentage point improvement you get from Hellebuyck to Vanecek is worth the assets you'll pay to get him, or worth the assets you'll have to pay him to keep him. We are talking hundredths-tenths of an actual percentage improvement in save percentage. Yes, I am biased. Colorado Rockies 1976
Curious to see how Fitz could possibly fit Toffoli beyond this season. Guy clearly wants to stick somewhere.

NJDevils1214
I'm all for CH as a pure rental and nothing more. If NJ can get him for a rental price, like a lot of these dudes have been getting passed around for late round picks, then go for it. Just go for it knowing we aren't paying him his next contract.

Id be ok with that too, let him and schmid run the net for a season and atleast that would give us a better idea of what we really have going on with schmid. There's a reason that trade talks have stalled and I would argue that it's because his agent and Fitz couldn't make the money work. Players are allowed to talk to other teams through the agent prior to trades. Edited June 28, 2023 by RizzMB30

Very possible bro, and fitz probably isn’t interested in trading pieces to grab him for one season. However, if it could be done id do it and atleast buy us another year to see if schmid is capable of being our full time guy Edited June 28, 2023 by 2ELIAS6

Like I said, it's possible VV and/or Schmid lay an egg to start the year and minds change quickly.

Earned himself another 4-6 million a year contract I think. I'd even say if it's September and he hasn't signed anywhere and would come back at a lower price, I'd take him back for the sake of extra depth. I think some bubble team like Ottawa, Buffalo, Detroit, Nashville, maybe PIT or Seattle will try to bring him on. I know Toffoli is slow but he's brings a lot of other elements in his game that will be beneficial to the team.

Also see Fitz wanting to give a cheaper kid or two a look.

Our biggest star hasn’t even hit his prime yet. Seriously, Jack is only 22 years old. Ullmark is a bad example for your argument. He was absolutely terrible in the playoffs this year.
devlman
Fitzgerald is nailing every move! Getting a physical, experienced sniper full of playoff pedigree for so little is tremendous work.
devlman
Also I guess my dream of pulling off a surprise move for Tom Wilson looks ever more distant now. But for Toffoli, I’m more than happy. Forwards are stacked. Timo deal needs to come through now.

Once i know hes locked down and not changing his number im ordering myself a jersey from hockeyauthentic Same - I made a bet during the season that if he scored a goal in his first game I'd buy his jersey, and of course it happened but I had to wait for the contract
Mitico12
I like Toffoli since 2012, especially noticed him when he was part of the team that broke our heart in the 2012 SCF. Good move for Fitz. Definitely appears to mark the end of Tuna in NJ. Despite the upgrades, we need to realize its one thing making paper moves, and one thing actually going out and winning. I hear a lot of fans on this forum - with all do respect to the younger folks on this site - thinking that this team is a few months away from becoming the second coming of the 1980s Edmonton Oilers. After our second round exit I saw people firing off as if we had won the cup already. My word to them - relax. It's not that easy. The team has to have a lot of things going for it - good leadership, good coaching, injuries kept to a minimum, good goaltending - and most importantly - a burning desire to win. Players have to play up to their ability, day-in, day-out. Have to be able to recover quickly from tough losses during the season. Have to be able to score by committee if one of our guys is out for short to medium-stretches of time. I'm happy Fitzy is not standing idle and trying to build a winner. Now it's up to the coaches, players, and the fans to support the project (with cautious optimism).

Hockey Reference shows 2012-13 as his rookie year but that's ok there were several other Kings who broke our hearts that year
