AlainChevrier
Three things: 1-Does it make anyone else a little bit uncomfortable to know that as long as Lou continues to work over on the Island that the Devils will not be able to truly give him a night and raise his name to the rafters? 2-Speaking of rafters - is anyone surprised that Sergei Brylin's #18 hasn't been retired? Change Palat's number and get that thing up there. 3-Good to be here.

Change Palat's number and get that thing up there. 3-Good to be here. Hey man, welcome to the boards! To address your points: 1) I do hope whenever Lou gets his night, that it’s not posthumously. He sure doesn’t want to seem to stop working, but sadly I think he’s eventually going to lose the Islander gig…he hasn’t done a good job there, and he has a lot of money and term tied up in a team that’s simply not worth what they’re being paid. I think he’s got 2-3 years left there before they decide to go in a different direction. 2) I like Brylin a lot but he is not worthy of a number retirement. He was a decent player who happened to be there for three Cups…doesn’t mean that he didn’t have his moments or didn’t contribute, but look at the guys who are up there. Three HOF guys, another who will probably get in eventually, and a great lunchpail guy who was here forever. Sergei just doesn’t measure up…I like that the retirements have been for truly special players.
AlainChevrier
You make some good points about Sarge, I'll concede a bit. As for Lou, the man has an insatiable appetite to keep on working, I keep hoping he'll give it up, rejoin the Devils organizations and become an advisor of sorts - all while getting a night of his own that he so richly is deserving of.

Most Devils fans love Lou and will always appreciate his time here. He obviously is a huge part of (successful) Devils history and that will never ever change, nor can his hand in assembling three Cup winners ever be minimized. That being said, I would never ever want him back here, in any role. This is Fitz’s time and Fitz’s team. Let him attempt to make his own magic in his own way.
AlainChevrier
Yeah, I think some are twisting my use of the word "advisor" into thinking I would want Lou to be involved in daily hockey decisions. Wrong. When I say advisor I mean it in the way of perhaps an "emeritus advisor", in an honorary capacity. I get the feeling that anyone who would not want to see something such as this happen are Devils fans who weren't around prior to Lou arriving - or - are fans without an appreciation for perhaps the single most important person in franchise history. This is a new era with new people calling the shots and I wouldn't change a thing in that regard. On the other hand, as someone who was around for the first puck drop with Don Lever at the center dot, I really hope I get to see Lou get that night I have written about. Nicomo
Yeah, don’t need Lou back in any capacity. Marty being in the FO is enough of a connection to the glory years.

I am 53 years old (just turned) and was around for the pre-Lou days. StarDew was going to lot of games when the Devils were awful for much of the 80s. No reason to make assumptions about members who simply see things differently than you. I absolutely think he should have a day where he is honored to the hilt. He had his time here and like I said, I look forward to when he has his ceremony…it will be the proper goodbye we never really got. But it really should be goodbye.
Nicomo
3 minutes ago, AlainChevrier said: Wow. Really? Wow? I wouldn’t think not wanting an 80 year old who the game has clearly past by back would be a particularly controversial opinion. You seem to be basing your desire to have him return on pure sentimentality. He’s done nothing since leaving NJ to indicate he’s still particularly good at his job.

I have been with this team from the beginning. I had season seats at the Meadowlands from day 1. I saw Lever, Marini and all the originals. Have most of their autographs. This has nothing to do with not wanting Lou back. He was kind when my mom died after game 2 of '95 finals. He had his time and did well. He was also a stubborn SOB. His time has passed. That is my opinion. 😀 6
StarDew
Also in re: the topic, Timex is my favorite player of all times. Always will be. I would like his number retired but I am in the minority and that is fine. People agree to disagree on this issue. 😀
jagknife
Sarge should be the second person inducted into the Devils' Ring of Honor, especially with Lou still actively doing... whatever he's doing... out on Long Island. The concept started with McMullen Night was well done... then abandoned. It should come back to honor the contributors to the franchise that don't meet the level of having a number in the rafters. Hell, if they don't want to do a full-up portrait like McMullen's, we have enough grey space in the upper levels an name and number will work perfectly to fill those voids.
DevilMinder
Anyone who had a firm or reoccurring hand in getting the Devils one of their 3 cups should be in the ring. This isn't the Hall of fame, get some new guys in there (especially ones who are around all the time).

So many players worthy of being “Ring of Fire” guys…Sarge among them.

I’ve said this before, but I really think they are waiting for Lou so he can be the second person in, after the man who brought the franchise to New Jersey. If that’s the reason, I have no issue with waiting. Lou deserves that.

Lots of players worthy.
point
Lou deserves recognition as a builder of the Devils franchise. Sadly what he brought to the Devils has not aged well.
Lateralous
Lou is actually the one who deserves some sort of banner in the rafters. Probably Emrick too. I love the idea of the ring, after 40 years, we’ve had so many guys that I would love to see recognized like that but not necessarily by a jersey retirement. Zajac, Langenbrunner, MacLean, Rafalski, Sarge, etc. As for Lou, I will always appreciate what he did for the NJ Devils in the 90s and 2000s but yeah, don’t let him anywhere near any type of decision making now. I don’t think that’s a big insult. As much as I love everything Fitz is doing now, I probably won’t want him calling the shots for the Devils in 2055 either.

Doc should have a microphone banner or mural. Zero question. Lou should have a mural next to McMullen or a banner as well. can we just not hand Grant Marshall a ring of fire entry… my lasting memory of him post playing career was his rough introduction to in arena entertainment and just not being great at it. Granted that was YEARS ago… lol Zajac also deserves a spot, as does Langenbrunner, as much as his tenure ended very tensely
