Maybe that will be the motivation to let Nemec steep in the AHL another year to kick his contract can down the road a little more.
moustic
In Holtz I believe ! Good luck to keep everyone together but that's the definition of a good problem to have !

Devils won't have to worry about this for a couple more seasons; the cap is supposed to be going up, FWIW. And Holtz remains far from a sure thing at the moment...he may not even be a major factor. That being said, all Fitz can do is what he's done so far: sell the kids on the vision, the state of NJ itself, and taking less money for the greater good. But yeah eventually tough decisions have to be made in time. I get the feeling that Fitz is more of a "Put the best team on the ice, worry about contract situations later, I'll figure it out" guy...meaning that if Nemec forces himself into the picture this season because he makes the Devils better, he'll be up with the big club. I suspect Hamilton and Palat won't be here through the end of their contracts. That's a lot of room that can be freed up down the line.

I'm obviously not the biggest Lindy fan in the world and I can see how the above can come off as a dig at Lindy, but it really isn't...finding that way of doing just enough without trampling or meddling or micromanaging is a legit skill. As someone who's been a Met fan for decades, I can absolutely tell you that Terry Collins used to get in the way CONSTANTLY...Bobby Valentine often did too. It was for different reasons...Terry was really just kind of a dope, and Bobby had this odd inferiority complex where he felt that he had to constantly remind everyone just how smarter than everyone else he really was...often to the point of eventually getting on a lot of people's nerves and wearing everyone out. Of course, a head coach (and his staff) HAS to be involved, but with team, I think there's the potential for "will occasionally need tweaks and wake-up calls, but not necessarily constant guidance or someone in charge outsmarting himself". I can Lindy not only being that kind of guy if all goes well, but his players (who already seem to genuinely like him plenty) loving him for it.

But as exciting as this time of year is you also always have to kind of hold your breath (same with football) that nobody gets too banged up in practice/meaningless games. My football team is currently 0-2 and dealing with the fallout of our star QB straining his calf on like the 2nd day of training camp. Just don’t want any setbacks. Especially for someone like Luke who needs all the action he can get.

At least your team hasn't gotten embarrassed on national tv twice AND gave your horrendously mediocre quarterback a $40m x 4 year deal.... I suspect Hamilton and Palat won't be here through the end of their contracts. That's a lot of room that can be freed up down the line. I suspect it will be a thing of management wizardry. That being said, I think Hammy will play out that contract if he's still anywhere near 80 points per season player. Palat on the other hand, I'm not so sure. Some of that money plus Haula/Toff salary after coming off the books will likely be used to keep one of Mercer OR Holtz. Hamilton just needs to be that 80 point per season player until LHughes is producing at that rate. A lot of Dougie's money will go to LHughes and or Nemec, but there's not really a reason to move on from Dougie if he's playing well. We get last season Dougie again? Idk, I think he could play well enough to play out that contract. I am predicting that we might be overpaying LHughes and or Nemec for some of these younger years, but I think you gotta try to get them on the Jack Hughes 8X8 special early on. Or maybe something like Nico's 7.25 as a bridge deal and then get the big payday promised to you if you play well. That money has to come from somewhere and you have to be careful with bridge deals when the player wants to be here long term. Players can decide to just peace out if you just bridge deal them too many times. On 9/21/2023 at 3:44 PM, MadDog2020 said: Vitek 🤣 It's clear why this man is a media darling. RizzMB30
Loving what I'm hearing from this article. Nice find Maddog. https://newjerseyhockeynow.com/2023/09/22/devils-alexander-holtz-is-making-himself-noticed-early/ Biggest thing is right here Quote Holtz’s development isn’t just a player coming back from summer older and wiser. He put in the work. The 21-year-old forward explained that he worked with Jesper Bratt and his skating coach back home in Stockholm, Sweden. As a result, he’s more confident in himself than ever. “Me and Holtz skated a lot this summer,” Bratt said. “He had a really good summer. I felt it already in our skates. Some guys that are skating with us here now, and the captain skate already came up and told me, ‘He looks faster. He looks like he has been skating a lot. He’s really getting that high speed and intensity in his game up.’ I think it was a great offseason for him and I think he’s ready for a great season.” Matty Beniers worked out with the Hughes brothers in the offseason. There's a pattern of players work out with guys they like or want to be like. Jesper Bratt seems like a player who comes more in shape and just gets better every year and that is just the kind of work ethic that you want Holtzy to be around. Good things you want to hear from Lindy and Fitzy too early in the article. Watching some of the post scrimmage interviews with Nemec, and his english is really good now and describes things pretty good. It was such a huge year for this kid coming over from Slovakia and speaking the language everyday and really learning how to be a pro in the AHL. All he has to do is not go crazy comparing himself to L. Hughes and play his game and try to be reliable defensively. I think Nemec might not be opening night roster just based on space and if he's truly ready or not, but he's easily going to be first call up if any injuries happen.
