Going back to all time Devils goals

Here is my personal ranking based on my fandom since the mid '80's

-Arnott   2000

-Johnny Mac   '88

- Freisen/Elias   '03

- Henrique 2x    '12

There are plenty of other massive goals, Richer in '94, Marshall whenever that happened....

Living in Philadelphia in a house of particularly angry Flyers fans incensed by the Stevens hit on Lindros about 2 hours earlier, the Elias winner late in Game 7 of the 2000 ECF is an all timer for me.

I didn’t go into the ‘95 finals with a ton of confidence in our chances.   The end to end goal by Niedermayer was the one where the switch flipped for me and I finally believed the Devils were going to win the cup.

For me it was Game 3.  The two games in Detroit were obviously much closer, but when the Devils were up 5-0 in Game 3, that’s when I was truly thinking “Holy sh!t, this is really gonna happen!”

I have a friend who’s a Flyer fan (don’t really see him much at all, pretty much lost touch) who wouldn’t let that hit go for years and years and years.  Of course Lindros had the horrible habit of skating with his head down and he’d been on the receiving end of some other brutal hits as a result…and that’s how the game was played back then.

My all-time favorite Devils goal.

I was in downtown Philly clubbing with a Devs shirt on within a fortnight of that comeback, haha

When you see that replay from ice angle you see a couple of Devs fan LEAP out of their seats halfway up the lower bowl.

I always wondered if they got assaulted, lol

Jeez that is brutal.  Getting sucker punched while in a headlock.

That's how those mutants roll.  I don't know what happens once one crosses the boundary over to Pennsy, but goddamn so much of that state is as backwards as it gets.

That picture is like over 2 decades old now lol Flyers fans have really become tame since then. I find Rangers fans and Islanders fans way more obnoxious these days.

I was worried when I went for a game 5 years ago or so and I didn't wear any Devils stuff. Nothing happened. We cheered when NJ scored but no one even said anything to us. I got heckled more when I went to Buffalo lol, but they weren't unfriendly about it for the most part either.

Binge-watched “Dead To Me” over the past week or so…it’s 30 episodes over three seasons, and with most episodes only clocking in at about 30-35 mins, it’s an easy series to blow through.

Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini star, and both are excellent in their roles.  Cardellini is now definitely one of my favorite “gal next door types”…really quite attractive in such a completely down-to-earth way, and she does a great job bringing her off-center character to life.

Applegate was sadly diagnosed with MS halfway through the final season, so production had to be shut down for about 5 months, and being that much of that season was shot out of sequence, there’s times where you can tell which scenes were shot when; unfortunately the meds she had to take bloated her appearance, and many scenes were changed to have her character sitting down a lot more (for obvious reasons).  She knew that continuing would be very difficult, but she really wanted to finish the series and everyone apparently loved working with her and wanted to do everything to make it happen for her.

The waterworks get to be a little overdone during the third season, and there’s one trick that this series relies on a little too much (don’t want to give too much away), but it’s definitely a series worth checking out.

And best of luck to Christina Applegate as she does her best in yet another health battle (she had breast cancer in her mid-30s).

This woman has the makings of someone who was never told no, and someone footed the bill for her enabling this obsession... woof

On the "documentary" topic...while in Wildwood over the weekend waiting for 10 teenaged girls to get ready for dinner (my daughter's 16th b-day celebration - we spent a few days down there), I saw a "First 48" show dedicated to the 2003 fire that broke out at The Station in Rhode Island, where Jack Russell and the band that he was calling Great White at the time were performing.  During the very first song of their set, their manager let loose with some pyrotechnics (this in spite of the club being quite small, with a capacity of just over 400, and only 12' high ceilings).  Well, the pyros quickly lit up the soundproof foam that had been installed just about everywhere, and within six minutes, the ENTIRE building was engulfed in flames, with black smoke spewing everywhere.  100 people died, with 230 more injured (in many cases, burned VERY badly).

Between this doc and another that was made (America's Deadliest Concert), it's hard as fvck not to be infuriated by the whole incident, as you hear the stories from everyone involved, especially from the victims who survived and the families of the ones not so fortunate.  Goes without saying that the pyrotechnics in such a small space was a bad enough idea on its own, but so many parties just refused to accept blame and kept pointing their fingers at others and at each other.  The club was actually at about 50 people OVER capacity, and even worse, there was a bouncer who refused to let some people out of a rear exit because only BAND members and crew could use that door!  Are you fvcking FOR REAL?!

There's a video of the first 13 minutes of the actual incident on youtube (a local news cameraman was there to shoot a segment on - get this - nightclub SAFETY).  He catches the whole thing, the band starting their set, the pyros being set off, the area behind the band already going up in flames within less than 30 seconds, people VERY quickly realizing this was not part of the show and struggling to get out; the main exit quickly became so jammed that no one could get out that way.  Extremely disturbing sh!t...as is the whole story, and the incredible tragedy of comedy of errors that led up to this happening.  The fire marshal who had been to the building THREE TIMES never wrote up the owners for using packing foam for soundproofing, even though that foam was known for being just as flammable as gasoline.  When asked, he claimed he "didn't see it", even though it was clearly fvcking EVERYWHERE!  And he was never brought up on charges because it was determined that he hadn't acted with malice.

These docs and videos are obviously not "happy" watching, but morbidly interesting from a "Wow amazing what can happen when all the wrong sh!t comes together."  Suffice it to say that the next time I'm in a club, I'll absolutely make an immediate mental note of where all the exits are, and where the "least likely to see the most traffic" one might be.  Because you truly never know.

I've seen that video, it's crazy how quickly it happened and so awful to hear all those people screaming while they died. That pyro should have never been used in that place. I've watched several documentaries about fires and crowd crushing. I always look for exits any time I go somewhere I haven't been before. Honestly more concerned about shootings nowadays than anything like a fire or a crowd crush but you never know.

Fire wise Bradford City literally had one of their stands catch fire and burn down during a game and 56 people died. It's crazy how fast the place went up in flames. Apparently the ticket taker locked the gate to go get a cup of tea and so nobody would sneak in and people tried to escape that way and ended up trapped and died. You might have to click the link to watch on YouTube because you can see people on the field who caught fire. This is from the broadcast of the game on TV...

There's also the Kentucky supper club incident from the 70s that had 165 people die. There really seems to be about one bad club fire almost every decade here in the US. I watched this about that somewhat recently...

ESPN did a 30 for 30 that's very well done about the Hillsborough disaster where too many people got inside the pens and it people had nowhere to go and 97 died and hundreds and hundreds had injuries. It's the worst accident in Britain sports.

There's also a documentary from the 2022 Seoul Halloween crowd crush. Some of the videos they showed I actually saw the day of and days after it happened because this one was all over social media. 159 people died basically on this small side street that became way too overcrowded and people couldn't move and the police didn't manage it correctly. So many young people died just wanting to have a fun time out after a few years that they lost because of covid lock downs. There's a documentary on Paramount plus about it that's done very well and shines light on how much the police and city failed those people.
