I love it but it won't. There is next to no chance Iginla gets past the Flames if they have the chance to draft him.

I agree. I also think there's a very solid chance Demidov isn't picked second.

I'm starting to think Sennecke might be the Devils' guy. Dennehy (Devils chief of amateur scouting) was interviewed by Novo, and he raved about 3 players in the Devils' range: Dickinson, Brandsegg-Nygard, and Helenius. It just seems so odd to speak so highly about prospects ahead of the draft if you're truly considering them. Maybe Novo has a couple more articles coming out this week where he'll discuss other prospects with Dennehy. But you'd think if you really were interested in a prospect, you'd keep it quiet, or at least say the bare minimum.

I get not wanting to be tied down because of family ties, but heard the Flames would maybe pass on Tij Iginla even if he fell to them.

That is would be a weird move by CGY. Kid looks like a stud.

There would be a lot of pressure and expectations on the kid in Calgary; more than anywhere else. That could be why.

Well, hopefully they do, and if we keep the pick, we snag him.

i’m still holding out the hope we trade for a right now piece and make that flames extra pick next year essentially a 2nd rounder

I'm sure Jerome discussed with Conroy etc do not pick because of me. Pick who you think will help the team. Tij might even be gone before #9. I'd love to see Devils get this kid

A little mock draft up until pick 10 because this is always fun to see how wrong you can be (drafting not based on my preferences, but on what each team could do based on patterns and what their needs are):

  1. SJ: Celebrini - Easiest pick
  2. CHI: Levshunov - I think they go for the big, all around defenseman. Could be a cornerstone of their core with Bedard.
  3. ANA: Dickinson - GMs love this kind of player. Ducks have a lot of good young talent on offense. After losing Drysdale for Gauthier, this can help give them another high end defense prospect.
  4. CBJ: Demidov - This team is getting pretty stacked with defense prospects between Jiricek, Svozil, and Mateychuk. I think they go with the high upside winger here.
  5. MTL: Lindstrom - They already have one of the most promising power forwards in Slafkovsky. The idea of adding another power forward in Lindstrom to the mix could make them a very tough team to play against in the near future.
  6. UTA: Silayev - Was initially thinking Buium here, but I get the sense that GMs love Silayev, and it will be hard to pass up on this 6’7 defenseman who really can skate.
  7. OTT: Parekh - Nearly every mock draft I’ve seen has Parekh going here, so it means he probably won’t. Getting a high end offensive defenseman seems to fit so well here, though.
  8. SEA: Buium - Too good of a prospect to pass up on. Will be praying he makes it to 10 if he’s still on the board by this point. For the record, this is probably my favorite defenseman in the draft.
  9. CGY: Iginla - As others have said, they may want to avoid all the pressure that comes with selecting the son of their legendary player. I think they make the pick if he’s available
  10. NJ: Sennecke

Tough for me to say what the best pick is here. There are a few options I like at this spot, probably Brandsegg-Nygard being my favorite at the moment. There are certainly some concerns in Sennecke’s game. His 200-foot game needs work. He’s still improving his skating. But what is undeniable is Sennecke is a big frame, with incredible puck skills, and some high end offensive tools. He seems to be getting significantly better and better as time goes on. He scores from all areas, and all different kinds of goals. It isn’t just the highlight real goals that junior players often score that do not end up translating to the NHL level. If the Devils feel that this player will continue to grow into his frame and improve, I can definitely get behind the pick.

If it isn't Nygard, I would also be very happy with Solberg or Helenisu here. I think there's a chance someone like Dickinson, Levshunov, or Lindstrom drops a bit. It would be crazy if the Devils were able to select one of them. Devils could get very lucky. And I'm sure Fitz will be listening to calls right up until the pick.

Gotta admit, I really thought the 10 OA pick was going to be packaged for something.  Maybe it still happens, but fair to wonder if Fitz more and more is seeing this as others have alluded to...Devils (hopefully) won't have another pick that high anytime soon, and just when a lot of core players will all be getting well-paid across the board, having that ELC potential stud to bring up is massive.  But also fair to say that Devils gotta start hitting on some more picks other than the "obvious" ones.  Bratt turned out to be a great later-round find but we're long past the 2016 draft.  Some pieces from some of the more recent drafts have gone in deals for other players, but in general it's been kinda slim pickins.

I’m fine with Fitz keeping the pick. The more I think about it, the more it makes sense to just hold on to it.

Yeah same.  I'm open to it still being dealt depending upon the return, but if it doesn't happen, I won't be disappointed.  Seems like there's going to be some solid options to take with that pick.

I’m good with this, but I’m still kind of hoping some last minute trade comes about. I wouldn’t want to move it for something just meh, but if we were able to get something significant that would make an impact today I’d move that thing in a package for something exciting in return.

I am frankly not okay with keeping the pick and will consider it a missed opportunity if we use it.

There's just no way the player picked here will make any impact on the roster within the next 2-3 seasons which is when we'll be making our push.

If there's nothing they want to use it on in a trade they just need to not miss with the pick and use the player they get. Idk how much faith I have after this whole Holtz debacle tho.

Thing is there doesn't seem to be a trade out there that really fits our 'now' timeline either.  I wouldn't have wanted to trade 10 OA for Markstrom, don't want to trade it for Necas (who seems like a luxury buy for us) or any forward who isn't a big banger who can score and I doubt any significant d-men are available for that pick alone.

Totally fair points, and that's why I kind of used the phrase missed opportunity and not failure by Fitz.

If the right deal isn't there, obviously I wouldn't want him to give away the pick for bad value and I'm confident he wouldn't do that. Just hoping he's able to get something done here in the next several hours, fingers crossed.

To this, I would ask what specific opportunity would Fitz have passed up?  If there's no deal worth making for the 10 OA, it doesn't make much sense to deal it for "right now" help if it's not a player who's going to move the needle much (and I see that you pretty much addressed this in your response to NJDevs4978).

I also mentioned it previously but keep in mind that having a young player capable of making an impact in 2-3 years making ELC money might be a VERY welcome addition in 2-3 years.  It's having some young guys that you can filter in that keep competitive windows open longer; also, whoever the Devils pick can be moved in a year or two for someone better than what they can get for the 10 OA right now, if the right opportunity comes along.

Agree fully, especially about Necas.  He's an arb-eligible RFA-to-be too...he'll be looking for a nice raise I'm sure.  Not sure he'll fully worth whatever hit he gets going forward.
