I can see Dawson’s new deal coming down to the wire…these non-superstar, non-arb eligible RFAs only have so much leverage after their ELCs expire.  Dawson may not sign a contract that he’s thrilled with this time around, but he can prove that he’s closer to the 2022-23 version of himself rather than the version we saw last year…and then will do a lot better with his next contract.

It worked for Bratt

Oh for sure, it did, and there’s definitely examples of similar “bet on yourself” payoffs.

His situation is a little different than Mercer’s in that Bratt had a quantum-leap kind of season headed into that RFA season, where he decided to take a one-year deal as time wound down (instead of arbitration).  Mercer’s coming off a down year.

The funny thing is that I can see why Bratt took the one-year contract, and why Mercer might decide to take only a couple of years at most, even with their circumstances being different.  Bratt’s camp probably thought “You put together one more year like 2021-22, you’re cashing in.”  For Mercer, it’s probably more like “Don’t sign anything beyond a year or two; you figure to get Top 6 minutes and you can potentially put up much better numbers.”

The Devils defense for next season looks something like:

Siegs-Hamilton

Luke-Pesce

Dillon-Nemec

I really like Hatakka, but I wonder how he gets any time with the Devils with Kovacevic in the mix now.

Only if one of the lefty shooters gets hurt.  If Siegs struggles and doesn’t figure it out in due time, maybe Hatakka gets a look, but Siegs has a lot of years left on his deal.

Maybe we can absorb an injury or two now and not completely derail.
Although last year's injuries would derail any team.

I suspect something similar to Loft seats fare.  Which is anywhere from decent to pretty good, based on the options available in 2023-24.

I still can't believe for the life of me that when it comes to all time greatest Devils goals........

some Devils fans rank MacLean's goal higher than Arnott's.

That's CRAZY.

I think people rank the MacLean goal higher because of the symbolism it represented; making the playoffs for the first time as a franchise was a big deal. Obviously the Arnott goal was bigger, but I get it.

I was 10 years old when Arnott scored that cup winning goal and I still remember it like yesterday. My little brother and I stayed up watching the game and building a Stanley Cup out of cardboard, foil, and a plastic cereal bowl. My brother fell asleep during the 3rd period 😂.

The next day we played street hockey till the streetlights came on and held up the cup for every car that passed by.

I think MacLean's goal being ranked ahead of Arnott in some circles might have to do with the fact that the Devils were pretty much considered minor-league by many at that point, and not only did MacLean's goal get them into the playoffs, they even fell just one game short of reaching a SCF.

Arnott's goal was obviously a massive moment, but the fact that the Devils already had one Cup in their trophy case arguably makes it a just teeny-tiny bit less crucial than Mac's goal (Devils miss the playoffs entirely without it), and even if Arnott hadn't scored (assuming the Devils would've gone on to lose Game 6 as a result), they still had Game 7 at home; Mac's goal was now-or-never.  The franchise hadn't even so much as won a single playoff game in their entire history prior to Mac's OT winner (they did make it as the Rockies in 1978 of course, and actually played the Flyers tougher than expected, but were swept in two games)...by the time Arnott scored his Cup-winner, much more had been accomplished since 1988.

I think both goals are important enough that I don't see much of a need to rank one ahead of the other, honestly.  Mac's goal was huge at the time, in that other teams had to actually start giving the Devils SOME degree of respect, and the franchise FINALLY banked some playoff wins...they even finished the season with their very first winning record, 14 seasons in the making.  Arnott's goal was huge for the obvious reason, but also because the Devils were no longer some shortened-season one Cup wonder.  Both were massive in how each one led to perceptions about the Devils changing significantly:  from perennial afterthoughts to a team that could actually win and do a little damage in the 1980s, and from a paper tiger to a team that could both go on another deep run AND win the whole shebang in 2000.

Capt. Obvious- Fitz has made size a sizable priority this year. Very Lou-like of him.

But he didn’t get any players over 35 that have played here before and over pay them like they still have that value…

(Noesen is 31, so my point is still valid)

Also isn't doing the "Part Deux" thing that Lou often did in later years...well, not OVERdoing it at least!  Noesen is obviously a Part Deux but he's a better player now that he was when he was here the first time.  And should be a solid player while he's here, as you noted, he's not old.

Always a double-edged sword early on...

The Devils are back!  Another hockey season is coming!  Yessssssssss...

...so are shorter days, everything looking dead and dreary, sh!tty weather...

I really REALLY hate winters.  Not even because of the cold, which isn't even THAT cold anymore, and that's why we have wool-lined hoodies.  It's everything else that comes with winter.  Those December days where it's dark around 5:00 and there's no color and all the trees look skeletal...damn I really hate that sh!t.  Especially those high 30s-low 40s days where it's raw and rainy.  fvck that.

I can totally buy what you’re saying, but it’s pretty difficult to rank any Devils goal ahead of Arnott’s for obvious reasons.

But I respect what you’re saying.
