So our development teams turned a 7th overall pick and a 23' consensus dark-horse goalie into Paul Cotter and a pick. Not thrilled but he's got size.

I’m at a little bit of a loss with this whole thing here.

Back to the drawing board trying to develop a scoring winger for Jack to play with.

$19m in cap space… here’s to hoping Monday is more than Pesce and Dillon (not that that isn’t nothing)

7 overall is irrelevant at this point, he's basically close to a bust and the entire league felt that way.  The Sharks wouldn't take him in a Timo deal, and Grier worked here.  Calgary wouldn't take him in a Markstrom trade.  We haven't wanted him seemingly since last trade deadline.  Team Sweden didn't even want this guy either.  At some point it's just a sunk cost and you have to move on one way or another.  Were we supposed to hang onto him and watch him disappoint until he became UFA or went overseas?

I'm a bit sad about offloading Schmid at this point too but the narrative would be dramatically different if not for ten days last April.  He'll always be a cult hero for that, a la Keith Kinkaid leading our surge to the playoffs in 2018.  After he regressed this year, he was just one of a number of goalies logjammed in Utica and eventually they had to clear one out (Schmid, Daws, Poulter).

This feels like giving up on Holtz just to get rid of him. Not surprised after how Fitz dragged him when talking about him.

Yeah Fitz and Co obviously don’t believe in him.

Re:  Schmid, Devils have a lot of goalies in their system and Schmid disappointed last year and with Daws and Poulter already at Utica and Markstrom and Allen already with the big club, something had to give.

Big guy, physical. Can bounce between the bottom six and second line.

He won the Cup with Vegas. He’s not nothing. He’s the type of player we need.

He didn't play a single minute of Vegas' cup run. Played most of the last 2 regular seasons but no playoff appearances, which doesn't look fantastic

Combination of a couple of things:

Easing organizational logjam at developmental G.

Add toughness and size to bottom six

Banish once and for all a mistake that they could not be more pleased to finally be rid of.

They’re already paying both Timo and Bratt. Need to actually develop some wingers at some point. It’s pretty much just Mercer right now. Hopefully at least one of Grits or Lenni will pan out.

Pretty fair summation.  Team Sweden not wanting him was a pretty significant red flag.  The Devils didn’t always help him but at the same time I don’t see Holtz as blameless.

Yeah you’re right, I thought he played in the playoffs. Be that as it may, he’s gonna have a chance here and we’ll see how it goes.

Yeah, Fitz blew the Holtz pick and has corrected his mistake.

At least it wasn’t a Rob Blake-sized F up.

They didn’t help him because he didn’t earn any help - he failed to demonstrate even the most basic elements of being a professional.

This is old news.

I understand the move totally, it had to be done but it's just a disappointing situation all around

They had 3 picks in the 1st round in 2020 and Mercer is now the only player left on the team. They did use Muk to help land Timo, but that’s still pretty brutal. Kind of 2015 Bruins territory.

Yeah, sucks when a 7OA doesn’t pan out.  But at least a player is coming back who has a better shot to have success with regards to what he’s being brought here to do.

Should’ve taken Askarov.

Blackwood looked like the answer at the time.  Obviously didn’t work out.
