PASSING THE PUCK ON VOWS

Page Six - Richard Johnson

February 10, 2005 -- Neil Smith, former general manager of the New York Rangers, claims his wife of 15 years can't divorce him because they were never really married. Canadian Smith and his Swedish bride, Katia, have an 8-year-old boy. But, says his lawyer Myrna Felder, "they weren't married" when they swapped vows in the Virgin Islands. "It wasn't a valid marriage. It wasn't registered. It wasn't filed, and it wasn't performed by a valid person," Felder told PAGE SIX. "How can you get a divorce if you're not even married?" But according to Katia's lawyer, John Vassallo, Smith — who brought Mark Messier to the Rangers and built the team that won the 1994 Stanley Cup — "arranged the wedding" and the couple is legally married whether or not "someone forgot to dot an I or cross a T . . . They filed joint tax returns, owned property jointly, and had a son together." Katia recently moved out of the marital apartment and into her own. Both sides will be in Manhattan Family Court on Feb. 17 on a Vassallo motion for temporary support and legal fees.
