NJDevs4978
...at least let's try to keep player X or player Y must go in a single thread eh? It's obvious after that disgusting display tonight and really the team's lackluster performance in the last two months that changes need to be made. Obviously it's going to start with coaching, at this point I'd still be surprised if our next coach isn't Johnny Mac or Burns although I'm not sure I'd want Johnny Mac if he was really running the team behind the scenes these two playoff years If it's not one of them then all bets are off. But assuming it is, now we move on to the players: Goaltender: Marty, real NHL backup - get someone that can AT LEAST play 12-15 games this year, after the way Marty's played in these last two months Defense: Whitey's here for the long term, Martin and Greene were among our most consistent performers in the playoffs and Matvichuk deserves a full season after the way he played with being off the whole year. Oduya'll probaby be around as the #6-7. Which leaves our two UFA's, Raf and Lukowich. I'd be inclined to keep Raf since he's our only proven offensive D - especially assuming no Gomez - and we'd probably have to lose Lukowich which I guess is fine by me. Lukowich was certainly okay for his price tag but in the new NHL he never really put it together consistently as far as being a physical force. Offense: The only definites to come back should be Elias, Gionta, PZL and Maddolfo. The offense clearly needs some new blood. Maddolfo needs a physical presence on their right side, they couldn't handle the size of Ottawa and Tampa in the playoffs. Whether it's Clarkson or Langs who knows. We'll need a replacement for Gomez in all likelihood. Drury'd be nice but his pricetag goes up the longer Buffalo's playoff run goes. That'll be where Lou earns his money this offseason, we cannot go into next season with Brylin as a second-line center.
Triumph
i'll be doing this thread tomorrow with a clear head - but life after gomez won't be that easy - though i wish he played like he did tonight every night this year.

Triumph
Amen Triumph. Now's not the time to complain. Thanks to the boys for a great season, I think they ran out of gas. Changes are in store, and I'm excited for them.
LizDevil30
A do agree that Marty needs a reliable back-up, and not a vet. A back-up that can step up in a couple of years. I guess Gomez is gone. Lou is going to have to look at FA's to replace him. I hope Elias rebounds from this awful season.

Chimaira_Devil_#9
This has the potential to be the most interesting off season in a long while. I want at least two new faces on defence. If Ottawa dosnt sign Tom Priessing i would like to see him in a Devils jersey. Dion phaneuf????? LOL We need size up front as well as speed. Now that its come to it i really dont want Gomer to go. I wasnt botherd earlier in the season, but thinking that could be the last time i see him in the devils jersey actually kinda hurts.
Devilsdude530
I was thinking of a guy like Preissing. He'd take the offensive-defenseman role off of Raffy. The question I'd pose to the forum: Could we get the same out of the obviously cheaper Preissing that we could from Raffy?
ArthurBosskarelli
Lou needs to get the team together, hook them all up to lie detectors, and ask them each "Do you really care if you win the Stanley Cup?" Everyone who says "Yes" and is lying and especially anyone who is honest and says "No" need to be moved some way, some how. The problem is, judging by the way they played in the playoffs this year, against Carolina last year, and at random parts of both this season and last, it's going to be at least 40% of the team that really doesn't give a crap overall whether they get the cup or no, especially since most already have at least one. njdevils783
huh?are you calling maple leaf fans relatively objective? i don't get it OH! you're saying i'm satisfied with getting to the 2nd round! I get it! No - but with this team, the 2nd round isn't such a bad thing. Would've liked to see them take the Senators to a sixth or seventh game, but that's how things go. LizDevil30
god it's amazing how spoiled devils fans are - if you think anyone out there wasn't giving 100%, please tell me. even gomez was on fire tonight. these guys all care - they got beat by a better, faster, and bigger team. Z-Man
If Gomez gets $5-6 mil per year, let him go. If Rafalski gets $4 mil per year again, let him go. That money can be spent elsewhere, where will actually have some cap room. First order of business....the new coach's first words should be: "Thank you Mr. Lamoriello for the opportunity. Marty Brodeur will play no more than 65 games this coming regular season. He's 35 years old, not 25."
davemaleyfan
The Gomez situation is weird.....the way he played in these playoffs, you say "geez, maybe it can work out"...then, come December, he'll be folly floating again, and anger will ensue. Things that I would like to see happen: -Reliable backup for Marty...this 75+ game crap has GOT to stop... -Bye-Bye Brian Rafalski -Size and toughness....as I stated in another post, if Jamie Langnberunner is this teams "power" forward...uh-oh (also as stated in said previous post, not a knock on Jamie...just the way it is) -If Gomez is lost, please PLEASE don't look to sign Briere! The LAST thing this team needs is another sub 6 footer. Again, not a knock on the vertically challenged (myself, I'm 5'10 on a good day), but as shown throughout the league this year, big, mean, strong players are still important in the "new" nhl. That's all I can think of for now.....
Devilsdude530
You know, some fresh, hungry to win a Championship blood might be what the doctor ordered instead of a club with 14 Cup-Winners. If Drury doesn't win it this year, he will be drawn to NJ. Lou will be like a fungus that grows on him and he'll have to sign. Then again, he's won once already, but these years in Buffalo must've made him want more.

njdevils783
Marty had no problem throwing the offense under the bus in his interview. How about living up to your weak play for a change.

'7'
It's time to start thinking about drafting a goalie, Brodeur will be 36 next season and without massive, trapping defenses in front of him and the old NHL rule enforcement, he's not going to win any cups for us. We need a goalie who can win us a few playoff games (or series) that we don't deserve to win. Tall order, but we have to prepare for the post Brodeur era. msweet
Losing Gomez is a mistake. Play Rass on the Madolfo line as a regular. Sign a stud d-man... (bye-bye Raffi unless you take $2M per) Need a real 1st line RW (think Heatly size and speed)... move Gionta to line 2 Play Marty less than 70 Could go on, but I'm way to dissapointed Tomorrow for my what to do post too. We need to change the way we play.
