Cam Janssen

Ok....I am well aware that the following statement may alienate me from everyone on the board and I'm only 3 posts in...but here goes nothing...

I can't STAND Cam Janssen!! There...I said it...

Yes, I will agree that watching Cam line up Juraj Kolnik from the near boards and crack his head against the glass makes me giggle like school girl. And yes, when Mr Janssen puts his mind to it, he can bang with the best of them and get his team charged up. And watching him take 10 punches to the head, smile and then start swinging once his oppenent gets tired is wildly entertaining...I wont dispute any of these points.

However, I just don't think there is any room in the Devs organization, or in the new NHL for that matter, for a guy thats all muscle but no skill. He is a liability every time he touches the puck. Yeah he's a great hitter, but he never hits anybody worth hitting. Imagine him going after an Alfredson or a Jagr...they would skate circles around him!

That being said, I do agree that the Devs should try him out on the blue line. As shown in his only goal last season against the Caps, he can shoot! Put him on the third defensive pairing and let him take shots from the point. Maybe use him as a PP specialist...the man has put a puck or two in the net in college...that might be a better role for him than a 4th line winger.

Hopefully, since he is here for a while, he'll get some ice time and learn to keep a puck on his stick but I wont be a fan until I can stop cringing every time a puck comes his way.

Sorry for the long post but I have never understood the Devil's fan's love affair with Cam Janssen :D

I just love the guy because he has a ton of energy and is a real team guy (like with the whole Avery-Brodeur thing. I loved watchin Cam walk down the bench to yell at Lundqvist). There were a few times last year when the team (and crowd) were dead, and he seemed to be the only guy out there going full speed. He plays his 3 minutes, gets in his fight, and he knows hes probably riding the pine the rest of the game, and I've never heard of him complaining about it.

Defensively, he would be a complete liability. Teams would attack his side to no end. He can hit, but like you said, he needs to make a better choice of WHO to hit. Of course, I don't really think he's gonna have a chance to be out there with too many top stars. But I think he can contribute with the right coaching. He'll never be a powerforward, but he can definitely turn into a tough guy who can put in the occasional goal. And by 'occasional' I mean more often than once every 100 games...

If Cam could carry the puck a bit and connect some passes, I'd be a fan of his...like I said, I love watching him knock heads. I take my brother to games and he's always bummed when Cam is scratched...the guy is exciting to watch. Hopefully he'll get some help from Sutter this year and develop into a solid 4 liner.

As for him playing D...yeah...you're right...he'd be a parking cone out there...

Cam hits who he can because his time on ice is limited to say the least. I dont think a smart and responsible coach will let Jagr get too much ice time with Cam on the ice at the same time. Furthermore, Jagr will be watching his back every second out there which will take away from smooth transitional plays and heroics. Just having Cam out there changes the other team's dynamics. I think of him as Shaq...nowadays. Sure Shaq cant hit free throws, is a terrible ball handler, slow as a snail but his mere presence requires the other team to double team him and change their strategy. On a side note, sure a Jagr may be able to avoid Cam 3/4 times but all its going to take is that one hit for a lesson to be learned. All in all, hes a motivated team player who is exciting to watch and important by his own right.

Disclaimer: Comparing Cam to Shaq was the author's attempt at making a point. By no means is the author implying that Cam is the "Shaq" of the NHL.

There is no future for him on the Devils. He is a FA and do not think Lou will resign him. Devils could use more offensive players than a player like Janssen. Its over here for him IMO.
According to the Brent Sutter article in todays Record, Cam just re-upped for 3 years. :D Promising. Maybe Lou thinks he can develop into a more responsible player.

Look.. the SD Curse hits again!!!!!:rofl:

Cam is what he is... he has some talent.. he can skate a little.. but he needs to be a pitbull on the ice... the problem is the 4th line this year and last wasn't built to be pitbull-like... you know Brylin and Rupp ain't exactly Holik and McKay out there to Cam's Peluso !!! :P

he's a guy you need to have for the regular season and if things get nasty in the playoffs you put him in, but if he shows SOME level of offensive skill (and I mean 5-10 goals).... you have an every game player... and come on.. who didn't go nuts when Cam blasted that slapper into the net last year??
