Chimaira_Devil_#9
I hope he stays, he is good for the leauge. And i need to see the guy play in London along with Selane. You really have to question how much he loves the sport though. Just won the cup with his brother, Fans love him, he is the captin, he has a great chance of repeating the feet again, and he wants to hang them up If Stevens didnt have the post concussion syndrome, im sure he would have played another 2-3 years. SatansDevils
Nothing wrong with this about Niedermayer. The longer he contemplates most likely he will retire. He has nothing else to play for except for maybe a 5th SC and a Norris trophy. If he comes back to the Ducks it is always a plus for them. devilsadvoc8
I couldn't care less what he does. He is dead in my eyes. Not because he wanted to play for someone else but that he took his sweet time with it. He is a great player and I value his contribution to past success but now he matters not. AND A BIG NO TO RETIRING HIS NUMBER HERE.
stevestevens
I'd much rather retire 18 then 27.
Don
Brylin wasn't the player Daneyko was? I think someone is overstating Daneyko's talent. He was slow. Took stupid penalties. He was less than zero offensively. But we loved him anyway. If Brylin were to play as many years with the Devils as Daneyko, then I can't think of a single reason why he shouldn't get his jersey retired and Daneyko not. It would be sentimental reasons, not skill. They say that Daneyko was the prototypical Devil in that he he came and gave his all each and every night... however much or however little that may be. Can you not say the same about Brylin? If you are of the opinion that Brylin shouldn't get his jersey retired, then you should also believe that #3 shouldn't be retired. sammyk
So? I'm surprised more sports players don't voluntarily quit. If I had $2M in the bank, never mind $20M, I'd be so out of here...... There really is a law of diminishing returns. How big a deal is it to add $7M to a bank account that already has $50M. As for retiring his number... the day he decided to go to the Ducks I retired everything on my desk with the number 27 into file 69.

Derek21
What i don't understand is,Why Niedermayer wants to retire now?I know he has won everything(Memorial Cup."Gold Medal..4stanley Cup..James Noris,Conn Smyth ect.) But, why don't he respect his contract, play 2more years then you can retire at 36years old, which makes way more sens.Plus, if he comes back, Ducks has an other shot at the Stanley Cup, their defense top 4 will be the best in the Nhl: Pronger-Nieder,Schneider-Beauchemin.And plus..Its not like he's getting paid 3millions-2.5millions.He'll get 6.2millions or 6.4(I can't remember) .But..Niedermayer is Niedermayer. If he wants to retire to get more time with his family, i respect that. The only thing i hope is he'll not do the same thing with Favre..'I'm gonna retire, oh no nvm, i'm coming for the next season" Ect.. TravisZajac
How many defensemen have won the Hart TZ? The last was Chris Pronger when he swept the Hart and Norris in '98-99 only to see his top seeded team eliminated by Owen Nolan's Sharks. And with that Crosby kid around, that's not likely to happen anytime soon. halfsharkalligatorhalfman
Daneyko was a sentimental favorite like brylin never was. With that said he gave just as much to the organization if not more and I would welcome his number being retired. The thought of another player wearing 18 is sickening. 27 though?? who cares? although i feel a little ill every time i see someone wearing 28 and it isn't kevin dean. You can only appreciate the sentiment in this post if you've lived a long while and been through the fire. BTW, Don, with an ex-wife, the $2M number goes to $4M. 27 into 69, LMFAO... me too

squishyx
Brylin probably wont have his jersey retired, but he deserves it a lot more the Nieds does. btw, if Johnny Mac doesnt have 15 retired I cant possibly imagine a good argument for Scott. Retiring numbers isnt about accomplishments in the league, it should be accomplishments for the team. WakeForestDevil
Exactly and keep in mind who you are talking about. After winning everything he can, Nieds was the same guy that left a comfortable situation in NJ to go play and win a Cup with his brother...accomplished....the real kicker is the fact that he drives a Honda Hybrid when he has the cash to own whatever car he wants....but he wants to be "responsible". Nieds is not your average cat.
brodeurrocks
Yea, but Al Gores son proved those Hybrids can go 100!
ice dog
i have not taken the time to read this whole thread, however i think niedermayer is a bit nuts... either get in or get out...he's got over 13 million bucks left in his contract and now he has put his GM in a position where they are gonna be in a serious cap bind if he decides he wants to play. really could care less, but if i'm burke i'm definately less than thrilled. guess he likes screwing with GM's...lol! i will give burke credit, schnieder is a cut above malakhov. devils26
I think by waiting until September to decide on retirement, Niedermayer is crossing the line between a privilege he has earned and just plain disrespect. He has got to know that what he is doing is very hard for a team, and he is not repaying a team that helped him win a Cup by doing this.
