Devils731
Why is it that everyone forgets that the Freezeman made the bad pass in game 7 v. Ott that almost imploded this team.. the fact that he scored the gamer winner only saved his reputation from being a goat, it did not make him a hero. Triumph
He did have something like 12 goals that playoff year which tied him for the league lead, I believe.

SC Devs Fan
Did Freeze carry the team on his back?? NOT... he was LUCKY!!! there were 10 players on that team far more important than the FREEZE MAN. Why is it that everyone forgets that the Freezeman made the bad pass in game 7 v. NJDevsFireOnIce
In response to red's excoriation, a Jeffremiad:Cheers to you Jeff Friesen, for your ridiculous scrunched up face during post-goal celebrations that left us unsure whether you had just scored or passed a large BM, for your fine moustache during the 03 playoff run which convinced me we were going to win the Cup, for truly yours was the most ridiculous stache ever worn by a Devil, for though Johnny Mac's was elaborate, for though McKay's was a thing of porn legend, yours was pure in that it seemed like the rest of your beard just didn't grow, for whenever you scored that year I always screamed "Stache Power!". Cheers to you Jeff Friesen, I will forever be the keeper of thy stache.

brodeurrocks
Thanks for the 2003 SC memories. Will never forget Game 7 vs. the Senators in the 2003 ECF. My thoughts exactly.....
Jimmy Leeds
Another case in point... is Stephane Matteau ANYTHING in relevant history if Slava Festiov doesn't kick a crappy wraparound attempt through Brodeur?? I think NOT

Jimmy Leeds
And if Freeze was not here in 2003 someone else would have scored the BIG goals and the DEVS would still have won...
SueNJ97
Red, even if the rest of his career wasn't great, he was key to that Cup win for NJ. Geez. I don't think it makes him a great player. I don't think NJ should re-sign him out of sentimentality. I just think it means he played a very important role in the last NJ Cup win and no, there is no evidence that if he hadn't done it, someone else would have. They were, to put it mildly, offensively challenged. It wasn't so much that he was lucky. The team was damn lucky he got hot at the right time. I know you hate him, but please try to at least be reasonable about this.

moj8681
I hated the Sykora for Friesen deal (with spare parts included on both ends), but you can't argue the immediate success it brought. Friesen had 3 game winners against Ottawa in the ECF, the GW in Game 1 vs the Ducks, 2 goals in Game 7, and 5 overall in the Finals. Overall, I think he was a bum, but the stars aligned that spring for him, and he is absolutely one of the top 5 performers of that post season for the Devils based on those clutch numbers. I still wish had Sykora (though he's a soft player), but in my mind, there's no way Petey was going to come up big like that when it mattered most. I seem to remember Scott Stevens calling him out for being hurt during teh first round against Carolina in 2002. That pretty much sealed Sykora's fate. Thanks for the Cup, Jeff! redruM
Red, help me understand. Are you arguing that someone else on the team would have produced those goals if he hadn't, or that NJ should have acquired someone besides JF in the Sykora trade and that person would have been as likely to supply the goals? Because I don't think the former is likely, and we'll never know about the latter unless you have a way to change the past. The book is closed on the 2003 Cup...and NJ won. Friesen scored 10 goals...including the one that won the ECF. Can't you just unbend about the fact that, in this one part of his career, he did something useful for the team you root for? Jimmy Leeds
Yes, he scores the goal that won the ECF, which he would not have had to do if he did not casue the tieing goal in the ECF..that's my point, that goal did not make him a hero. just not a goat..
