Bettman backs stripes

Actually, I think that was James Duthie quoting an "un-named NHL goaltender". Pang said that Turco has said that he's thinking about taking this to the rules committee.

But let me play Devils' Advocate for a moment here.... why is this unsportsmanlike? Standing in front of the goalie and doing everything in your power to get the goalie off his game SHOULD be the goal of the guy in front. All the talking heads said was "no, it's over the line.... it hurts the game.... it makes the league less credible". Less credible? As opposed to the Pronger suspension? The Penguins throwing their last game of the season? The officiating thus far in these playoffs? If this was 1995 and it was Claude Lemieux in front of Hextall we'd be defending him.

As for it "getting the Devils angry", I might buy that if Avery hadn't scored seconds later. Maybe the combination of the two - his antics *AND* scoring a goal. But I think the Devils improved play in the second half of the game had nothing to do with Avery and everything to do with knowing that they had to win this game or they were likely eliminated.

Potentially getting eliminated didn't seem to be bothering them too much up to that point.

Not to mention the last thing the league needs is moron players getting drilled in the back of the knee by a slapshot because some idiot had delusions of Avery! :P

Well, that's the other thing... do we really need to legislate against stupidity? His own teammates were upset at him for blocking the net....

I really don't think that if the league hadn't acted that this would become an epidemic.....

I can tell ya right now, when I was playing ball, I'd do every dance and gesture imaginable when on first base, trying to distract the pitcher. I never thought of it as bad sportsmanship...

Dancing and gesturing from 60 feet away is a lot different that waving your hands and stick in someone's face from five inches away.

Looks like the rulebook already has this covered. Now if we can just get the refs to crack the damn thing open.

It'd be a nice change from watching officials suck hind tit.

Well, I'd say Avery was absolutely trying to get Brody to punch him. The thing I had the most issue with was his waving his stick. No place for that, but the taunting I was fine with. Had he just mirrored him, I'd have ZERO problem with it. As stupid as it is to turn yer back on the puck that is.

The best thing that could happen is to have Marty cross check him in the face with the refs watching.....and call NOTHING. Send a message to Avery that there is a line that can be crossed and if so, he's on his own. Then when he turtles in the crease after losing a few teeth, call him for goalie interference. Let hockey police itself.

First of all waving a stick at head level is different than say, a glove. Secondly the NFL has a similar rule against faceguarding. Cornerbacks can't look at the receiver and put a hand in their face even if they never touch them.

Well, that's what they were discussing on Hockey Central tonight.... next game, does Avery face away from the goaltender, but put a glove in his face? He's facing away from the goalie, so he's not breaking the 'Avery Rule', but yet he's got a glove up in the goalies face so he can't see.... Should that be an addendum?

No, if Avery is facing the play then he is involved in the play and can attempt to distract as he likes. When he turns his back, focuses solely on the goalie, and is no longer involved in the play then he is being unsportsmanlike.

CORRECT about the waving stick - that's bad mkay. That's the part I took issue with.

WRONG about faceguarding in the NFL. I believe that IS a rule in NCAAF, but it hasn't been a rule in the NFL for years, even though the Pats Ellis Hobbs was called for it to give the Colts a 1st and goal from the 1 on their gift win over the Pats to get to the Super Bowl.

I'm pretty sure it is in the NFL. You still see it called every once in a while when a cornerback plays the receiver's eyes and not the ball.

Avery's move reminds me of when A-Rod yelled at that third baseman and made him drop the pop up. Total minor league, cheap move. Avery SHOULD be suspended, but won't because Bettman needs the Rags to win because they are a bigger hockey market. If a Devil did this he would have been suspended for the rest of the playoffs.

He shouldn't be suspended, as much of a dick move it was, it wasn't even against the rules. There is no way they would suspend anyone for the entire playoffs for that either. That's just ridiculous.

Yes he should. I'm not saying it has to make sense. Avery should just be suspended. The league can say he was suspended for "being a douchebag".

What were you in, Little League? I've never seen such actions in MLB.

First off, I remember an incident in which a player by the name of Grant Marshall received a 2 minute unsportsmanlike conduct for doing the chicken dance to a little known Ranger by the name of Kasparaitis.

Second, he's not going to get suspended, and they are not going to make a new rule, but simply clarify that what he did does in fact fit the bill for inciting or unsportsmanlike. Probably more along the lines of Unsportsmanlike.

And his teammates probably told him to knock it off because A) they don't want to get stuck with a stupid penalty to kill (for the 9th time) and B) They would be just as pissed if we stuck Gio in front of Lundy to do that same thing.

Simply put, Unsportsmanlike is doing the act of something - well, unsportsmanlike! That was a little-league play he pulled and everyone knows it. EVen to dumbass himself, which is why he declined to comment after the game. And I can't say I blame the refs because chances are, 99.9% of the people out there have never seen a move like that in hockey ever before.

said they need to drop the instigator so morons like avery can be properly dealt with...

pretty much everyone in north america excluding ranger fans think avery is an a$$hole...lol!

I wish I could see that Coach's Corner. Know where it might be available to watch?
