Rats beat Phantoms in preseason opener

Eric Johansson (pictured) recorded a goal and three assists to lead the Albany River Rats to a 5-4 win over the Philadelphia Phantoms in AHL preseason action in Voorhees, N.J., on Saturday afternoon.

Dave Roche, a Calder Cup finalist the last two seasons and a member of the 2001 champion Saint John Flames, added a goal and two assists while Michael Rupp scored twice for the River Rats. Scott Clemmensen made 28 saves in net for Albany.

Rookie center Patrick Sharp scored twice for the Phantoms, and Antero Niittymaki (15 saves) and Dave Stathos (four saves) shared Philadelphia's goaltending duties.

These two teams will meet again in an NHL rookie game on Thursday afternoon prior to the New Jersey Devils-Philadelphia Flyers game at the Continental Airlines Arena in East Rutherford, N.J.

Belizarius' notes :

Johansson scored 104 pts last year with the Tri City Americans (WHL)...he was drafted by Minnesota and unsigned, so the Devils had the good idea of re-drafted him this year...i like it! :)
