Beezer34
NBC scores BIG Last Sunday's game drew the largest audience for an indoor hockey game this season. I'm sure the sports media (outside of hockey) won't acknowledge this accomplishment, but who cares. A 1.5, for a second round playoff game (which was going up against the NBA on ABC: KG's Boston\Atlanta Game 7) is great news for the league. The number equate to a little over 2 million people watching. NHL
John Wensink
I'd like to know the viewership in Canada for NHL vs NBA, then add the totals for all of North America. I think NHL would come out on top. Hey it's not like the Canadian Dollar isn't real money anymore...it's better!

Beezer34
I'd like to know the viewership in Canada for NHL vs NBA, then add the totals for all of North America. I think NHL would come out on top. I don't know why they don't. Canada should absolutely be included in the Nielsen system. My beef is how the media likes to blast us for our ratings, and then when we do well, you don't hear anything. Four months ago during the outdoor classic on New Years Day, the game nearly drew a 3, beating every single NCAA bowl game in the process. You had to dig for that news. Besides nhl.com, I don't remember the story being covered anywhere else. Edited May 8, 2008 by Beezer34
CRASHER
Hooray the NHL is as watched as the Pro Wrestling "C Shows" I never liked the ratings system... it can't account for people watching in groups and big sports events are NEVER watched alone!! LizDevil30
Oh terrific. Next contract negotiations with the NHL, NBC will insist the rags 1) always make the playoffs and 2) are permitted to go deeper and deeper into the playoffs every year. Devils731
Canada isn't included in the ratings system because the ratings are trying to measure US viewership for US channels.

GA Devil
Canada will never be included in the Nielsen numbers until the CBC or whoever decides to pay for the service. Also, Crasher, you are, for the most part, correct in that the ratings do not account for large groups of people nor people watching at their local watering hole. However, there are homes in the National sample that have "People Meters" installed along with all the other Nielsen equipment. These meters are designed as such that all the people in the household have thier own button. The People Meter also has buttons for guests where they can enter in gender and age of the guest. At least that is the way it was back in 2000. Dunno if they changed their methodology or not.

Which also can't account for the 20-25 people in a bar huddled around 2-3 TVs watching the game as well.... I'm sure every sporting event loses a decent number of it's audience due to people bar watching... and the bigger the event the more people tend to huddle ya know?? Stupid ratings!! eldon
Two quick comments. 1) I just started travelling for work. I was in MD, neither hotel I stayed at has Versus. Yet, they do have 70 other channels. Versus could give the best coverage ever, yet it not being a mainstream channel keeps their hockey games from millions of people. 2) The USA Today, which you get free when you stay at some hotels, has an article on Tuesdays mentioning sports ratings over the weekend & did not mention the NHL at all, and I figured with new york playing, it should've at least cracked the shell in ratings. You've hit the head on the nail with Versus. But any time someone at the NHL opens there mouth to explain this to Bettman, he takes $3,000 from the money mountain he sits atop thanks to Versus and shoves it down their throat. now that we're on this topic can someonw explain the ratings to me. how do they work. what makes up a point I think its 1 point = 1 million people? Look at Wikipedia. It's explained very well there.

You can bitch about Versus all you want, but ESPN with their "you should consider yourselves LUCKY we even bother to show your games at ALL, forget about consistent times or any sort of respect!" attitude wasn't doing the league any favors either. I'll grant you that ESPN has become a bit more NHL-friendly within the past year or so, but I'm still not convinced that hockey will be anything more than filler and an annoyance should the league return to ESPN. Never in a million years would I have considered NY to be the biggest tv market in the NHL. NYC is a baseball town, then there is a massive dropoff to football and basketball, hockey is dead last. And lets leave college sports out of this equation, there are no big colleges in the tri-state area, the closest being Penn State.

Say what you will about ESPN's coverage back when they had hockey, but I miss the hell out of NHL2Nite. I'd probably feel differently if I had the NHL Network, though. And then they started messing around with NHL2Nite -- not putting it on until 2 AM, sometimes not at all -- and that was the last straw. That was at the height of ESPN's disrespect of the NHL, and it was also close to the end of the contract.
Beezer34
Right now with just hockey, Versus poses about as much a threat to ESPN, as a root canal to Chuck Norris. But if Versus ever got any one of the Big'3 (NFL, NBA, MLB) in conjunction with the NHL, it could definitely divide the audience. I would love to see VS grow and be able to compete with ESPN. One station should'nt have a monopoly over anything.

One station should'nt have a monopoly over anything. Well said. Unfortunately, all Versus has right now to go with the NHL is Tour de France and rodeos. To me, it looked like ESPN took a direct stab at Versus when they signed Arena Football ... that's the kind of sport Versus should be picking up. I'd really like to see Versus get lacrosse, indoor soccer, hell even the WNBA. Fringe sports that are at least sports. Get these sports, put together a SportsCenter-esque highlight show and get your network in every household, and Versus just might be able to keep ESPN honest. Ah, to dream....
