Coldplay has a lot of talent...but their music is just uninteresting to me. They make boring pop music. It's been done a million times before.

Animal Collective probably just put out one of the best albums of the decade...It's not something you can sit down and listen to the first time and really get into...its builds up.

They put a great video out for "My Girls"

Blink is Blink...they are fun pop punk...

Monkeys with Microsoft Songsmith could put out an Animal Collective album.

Billy Talent is also the name of a character in the awesome movie Hard Core Logo....which is where they got the band name...

  • 3 weeks later...

My concert schedule this summer is VERY empty. Lousy lack of cash. So far the only definite is TV On The Radio 6/5 in Central Park.

Shows I'd like to go to:

All Points West Day 2 (Tool, Gogol Bordello, Ting Tings, etc - 8/1 - Liberty State Park)

All Points West Day 3 (Coldplay, MGMT, Gaslight Anthem, etc - 8/2 - Liberty State Park)

Kings of Leon (9/14 - Meadowlands)

Incubus (8/8 I think - PNC Bank Arts Center)

The Offspring (7/7 - Starland Ballroom)

No Doubt (6/26 - PNC Bank Arts Center)

Sponge (6/25 - BB Kings Blues Club)

The Smithereens (6/27 - Stone Pony)

Eve 6 (6/27 - Mohegan Sun casino)

I'd go see U2 as well, but only to see Muse open.

Of the listed, I probably only make it to one, maybe two. Sigh.

i really need to see 311...have seen them every summer for a few years now. might try to get to the chicago date, we'll see how much money i actually have.

as for recent shows, i saw new jerseyian jenny owen youngs at subterranean recently. she was kicking off her co-headlining tour with jukebox the ghost. pretty friggen' amazing, she puts on an unbelievable live show. the new album is really good.

i'm going to see the yeah yeah yeahs on the 26th at the aragon in chicago. it was a free ticket, i'm not complaning.

the counting crows are playing a free show at grant park later this summer. i'll definitely be going to that. i think the barenaked ladies and wallflowers will also be there. hello 1998.

Clutch, Monster Magnet, Wino, and ...soihadto... at House of Blues in AC 7/3.

I have no idea if I can make it, being a holiday weekend and all, but I MUST see ...soihadto... again, and why the hell not in AC with Monster Magnet and Clutch, right?

Dude, let me know if you're going to this show. I always see Clutch whenever they come around (which is pretty often) and they never disappoint.

I'm gonna try, but with it being the day before 4th of July, we'd probably have to leave before Clutch...it's an hour and a half drive, my friend's gotta be hooked up to her dialysis machine for at least 10 hours each night, and her family always goes somewhere on the 4th, so we'd have to be back up here by midnight or 1 AM at the latest.

Regardless, I want to go to A.C. and we both really want to see ...soihadto... again and possibly some of Monster Magnet as well, so we're gonna try to make it down there. I'll let you know for sure when I know.

Damn man, sorry to hear about your friend. That's rough. Do what you gotta do.

I saw Clutch at HOB last year and it seemed like it took forever for them to take the stage (lots of opening acts, just like this time around). I don't think I got home until around 3 a.m., and I think I'm a little closer to A.C. than you are.

Never heard of ...soihadto..., gonna have to give them a listen before the show. Clutch's opening acts have been a mixed bag for me. Acts like Viking Skull, Five Horse Johnson and Scott H. Biram blew me away. Others have been the absolute worst garbage I've ever been subjected to (Russian Circles ... I'd rather slam my nuts in a door than listen to them again).

Hot damn, if you didn't make it back home 'til 3 AM, I wouldn't have gotten back 'til 4 or 4:30...I'm at least an hour and a half, maybe two hours from AC, depending on who's car we take (I don't wanna make her drive, but she DOES drive a Mustang...)

But yeah, we'll definitely wind up missing Clutch in that case - not a huge deal for me, I like 'em alright but they're not an obsession by any means. I kind of want to check out Monster Magnet, but if we make the trip, it's definitely for ...soihadto... and the fact that we've been trying to hit AC for a year anyways.

...soihadto... are Duff's band (Food Network, Ace of Cakes). They play instrumental/experimental rock...very slow burning, but very kick ass in a live setting - the demos they have up on their myspace (www.myspace.com/soihadto) don't do the live stuff justice.

I'm giving ...soihadto... a listen right now. It's OK. I'm usually not a big fan of stuff that's 100% instrumental. If you like ...soihadto..., I'd recommend The Bakerton Group. It's Clutch minus vocals. ...soihadto... really reminds me a lot of them. I've seen that episode of Ace Of Cakes before too where they make the Orange amp for Clutch.

And as if you couldn't already tell, I'm one of those who's obsessed with Clutch. That's how it tends to be with them, I've noticed. You either love them or are indifferent toward them. My friend and my dad were bugging me for years to give them an honest chance, and as soon as I did there was no looking back. For the life of me, I don't think I've ever heard a song as brilliant on so many levels as Burning Beard. Possibly the only band I've ever heard that can re-invent themselves on every CD and not end up sucking or selling out. And, like any band worth their salt, they're better live than on CD.
