Rock
http://www.northjersey.com/sports/Devils_s...nsive_help.html Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello probably isn't done with his team's summer alterations. Lamoriello promised Thursday to trim his payroll to give him more flexibility under the salary cap and also is still looking to upgrade his defense after strengthening the team up front with Tuesday's signings of Brian Rolston and Bobby Holik. Even if he can't, Lamoriello claims he likes his defense as it is. It appears defenseman Vitaly Vishnevski, who signed a three-year, $5.4 million contract last summer, is on his way out. If the Devils can't find a taker in a trade, they could place Vishnevski on waivers and, if he's not claimed, send him to the minors, which would clear $1.8 million in cap space. BlueSkirt
hard to believe ViVi is a bust. I thought he would be serviceable for the 3 years. Lou has got to stop making these mistakes.

zachattack9
"When we're all said it done, we won't be anywhere near the cap where we are now," he said. Sounds like more than one person will be getting moved.
Jdub
The only way we send Vishnevski out of here is in a package with Gionta. Quick question... If Colin White were to retire... that would be due to his eye injury and wouldn't count against the cap right??
sokar
i have a question would you try to sign oduya to a new contract before the season starts, you know, just to get him out of the way, one less thing to worry about next year

SatansDevils
It does look like VV has played his last games as a Devil. If they release VV then there will be $7-$8M to spend under the salary cap.

Nope if they waive him I think they are still on the hook for the salary (too late for a buy out and I'd not want to have him on the cap over four years)... they can demote him... but that only adds $1.8 M to our $2.2. M... that's four ...I like your math though, gives us more cap room then we should have

Where did you come up with that figure? According to this: http://nhlnumbers.com/overview.php?team=NJD&season=0809 With VV we have 2.1 million in cap room, without VV we are up to 3.5 According to this: http://www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/team.php?team=NJ With VV we have 1.3 in cap room, without we are up to 3.

If they release VV it won't count towards the salary cap as they no longer own him or his rights.

Doubt it.. Cant only be VV.. The easiest payroll to unload is Gionta and his 4mil/yr, teams with playmaking centers will take him. I personally rather see a package deal to acquire a defenseman instead of using the empty free agency pool

I was adding his total contract of $5.4M so it would be about $4M.

SatansDevils
NHL == guaranteed contractsNFL == NOT guaranteed (in the NFL when you cut someone you are only on the hook for their signing bonus) OK. Then if Lou can't trade or move VV he will go to Lowell. More money wasted.
Jdub
The contracts are going to get so bad in the NHL where its going to be like the NBA where during trades they are going to include players who just have Horrible Contracts just so they can match the deal. Thats why i hate the NBA... overpriced babies.
ghdi
I dont think VV would clear waivers. Someone would pick him up.
devils26
OK.Then if Lou can't trade or move VV he will go to Lowell. More money wasted. The actual money will be wasted, but not salary cap space. Plus, after hearing a few interviews with Vanderbeek in the past, it seems like he doesn't mind spending up to the cap. This causes me to believe that Lou would have no problem sending anyone to Lowell in order to get that player off the cap.
ghdi
We need to target Vancouver. That oft-rumored bit of Devils/Canucks making a trade has a better chance of coming to fruition now w/ Vancouver being short on forwards and losing both Naslund and Morrison. Gionta to Vancouver for one of their young guys like Edler or even Bieksa. I say we avoid Ohlund, hes pretty injury prone, and Salo is getting a bit long in the tooth but he'd be ok. Confusious
He's pretty much confirming that Gionta is being packaged in a trade. C'mon lets get Jay-Bou. *crosses fingers*
Devils Pride 26
The only way we send Vishnevski out of here is in a package with Gionta. No way. Your telling me ATL wouldn't trade a 5th for him? (10M under the cap floor.) Anyway, even if no one wouldn't trade for him, we could start him in the minors and never call him up. In the offseason, you can be sent to the minors without waviers. His salary: the Devils still pay it. His cap hit: gone, zip, nada Edited July 4, 2008 by Devils Pride
Confusious
There is a lot of teams that could use a physical defenceman like Vish. I just hope that Florida is one of those teams...
