Rock
http://www.nj.com/devils/index.ssf/2008/09...h_offseaso.html "The two players we got are two players Lou (Lamoriello) and I discussed at great length as far as upgrading ourselves down the middle," Sutter told me via telephone. "We actually had four huge signings. We were able to keep Bryce (Salvador) and Pando (left winger Jay Pandolfo). I thought Lou did a tremendous job." But what about failing to land a high-profile defenseman? "When you look at the salaries some of those (free agent) defensemen got paid this summer, I'm quite content with the defensemen we have," Sutter said. I agree...Lou did a solid job...maybe he overpaid a little, but that's better than overpaying A LOT, and we all know that a lot of teams did that this offseason. Lou can always pick a defenseman at some point throughout the season. If he thinks this team can make a serious run he'll do whatever it takes. LucifersDog
He's a company man what would one expect him to say? He takes over for Lou if he doesn't disagree with him.
yankeesjetsfan
Although I still think we need a shut down defenseman, I think Lou did a solid job this off season.
sundstrom
sutter's comment is telling though - we'd love better defense but not at the prices we'd have to pay.
Devil Fan
I think the defense is a little bit shaky because of the inconsistency of colin White. He has to be a minute-muncher and hopefully Oduya can generate more offensive rushes for the team.
adavid
Could have been worse. I still wish we could swap Gionta for a tough D man, but I dont think there is anyone of value left. I'm itching for the season to start.
Devs4LIFE
I wouldn't be too worried about our defense. It's true that we don't have a shut down defenseman but if we spread our D out we can have 3 pretty solid lines, especially now that we're starting the season with Salvadore. And Salvador doesnt get injured much - despite what happened last season. Who knows. I remain confident until the runs out!

I'm not worried about the lack of a "shutdown" defensmen. Last year showed they can be a solid d-unit. What I am worried about is outside of Martin not really having a good puck moving defensemen, that missing component last year was the main issue with the Devils lack an offensive attack. brodeurrocks
sutter's comment is telling though - we'd love better defense but not at the prices we'd have to pay. Although I agree Lou did a very good job with Rolston and Holik and re-signing Pando and Salavador, I also read between the lines in his comment about the defense. I do agree that some of the signings were for absurd dollars and I think Lou is waiting for the season to decide his next move for the D.
