mikeford
What the hell is he gonna sign for? League min? We're gonna need to trade someone to make space I think. Could be the end of Gionta or Madden. LETS GO DEVILS. No matter who we subtract (if any) this is a HUGE acquisition and a league-wide COUP by Lou Lam. In Lou We Trust, indeed. Triumph
yeah rolston-holik-shanahan is not a 4th line, hate to break it to you. i guess shanahan gets #18? or #10? or #94? he wore that in hartford. edit - with brodeur on LTIR the devils have enough cap space to sign anyone they want. SatansDevils
GIONTA BETTER KEEP #14. No doubt. Gionta will be #14 unless he gets traded later this season. Shanahan could possibly be the first ever to wear #13??? That would be something if that ever happens. Its doubtful though IMO.

Good point, hadn't considered that, but eventually someone has to get moved.

sundstrom
What the hell is he gonna sign for? League min? We're gonna need to trade someone to make space I think. Could be the end of Gionta or Madden. i cannot imagine he's getting more than $1M prorated - he doesn't serve a purpose for the devils otherwise (he doesn't fill much of one in any way but i digress). the devils don't need to fit him in cap wise but they do roster wise - rupp seems to be the odd man out which means clarkson's gonna have to fight more....unless lou is setting up a deal - at this rate, who doesn't expect to see Jason Arnott coming back from Nashville to continue the reuinion toor that is the new jersey devils. frankly, its getting a bit ridiculous. yeah rolston-holik-shanahan is not a 4th line, hate to break it to you. i guess shanahan gets #18? or #10? or #94? he wore that in hartford. edit - with brodeur on LTIR the devils have enough cap space to sign anyone they want. correct about the 4th line. it also bumps clarkson off of PP2 and puts shanahan there which is about the only upgrade this signing brings. i was also thinking about what # shanahan gets. 21 & 25 are also still out there but as i said, i fully expect Arnott to get his #25 back in about 2 weeks. NJDevs4978
Lou will not allow anyone number 13, not happening. I don't get what Lou has against 13 anyway, unless he's just that superstitious. I can understand not giving out high numbers (though he's done it in the past with Gilmour and Mogilny). i was also thinking about what # shanahan gets. 21 & 25 are also still out there but as i said, i fully expect Arnott to get his #25 back in about 2 weeks. Haha god. I'd expect Claude back before Arnott but at this rate nothing would surprise me, except Lou bringing in someone that wasn't a Devil at one point Edited January 10, 2009 by Hasan4978
Toaster13
I didn't see this happenning. I almost forgot Shanny was still around. I wonder how he is going to work out in the lines.
devilsrule33
A 40 year old in a few weeks who has missed half a season. I just don`t see him getting the rust out and back to game speed for months. Did anyone see Sundin the other night? It looked ugly.
Devils731
I'm not excited, but I'm not annoyed because I don't think he messed anything up either. I guess I'm neutral right now with a better chance to be happy than annoyed with the move.

Devils Pride 26
Well, I have been saying I just want something for a while so I can't complain. Anybody else hae an excited feeling about this? Who knows what could happen. As long as he makes a positive impact on this team it's a good move. Elias Zubrus Gionta Parise Zajac Langs Rolston Holik Shanny Clarkson Madden Rupp/Pando BTW, I was considering that it might be the time to switch Gionta and Rolston. However, I feel Rolston on the thrid gives us 3 very good, if not great, scoring lines. Gionta wouldn't make the 3rd as difficult to play agianst. BTW II, Maybe trading a forward package for a defensemen is in the future for us.

Well clearly we're going to trade Gionta, Rolston's going to take his 14 back, and since he's in a contract year, we pick up Bill Guerin from the Islanders to wear number 12 and continue the reunion theme. Also, John MacLean's coming off the bench to reclaim number 15 from Langenbrunner, who's going to be a healthy scratch.
devilsadvoc8
He's going to need some time to get game ready. While he may be in "shape", he isn't game ready after this extended break. As long as it isn't big money, no big deal.
HellOnICE
I have this feeling Brian Burke's going to want Clarkson, and this move maybe frees up a roster pinch to go get someone like Kaberle and pair him with White.

Sunstrom I know you kid, but I would take Arnott back in a heartbeat in a trade. Lou possibly has a trade somewhere down the line, but it will be a while-maybe 2-weeks before we all even see Shanahan on the ice. It could be even longer. Shanahan to fit under the Devils salary cap it has to be less than $3M and I agree that it could be for $1M maybe $2M the most.
sundstrom
for all the people not liking this .. just imagine our powerplay with rolston and shanahan on it at the same time.. Dual logo-blasting from the point... rolston has been bad on the PP but that's because more often than not, sutter has asked him to run it as opposed to JUST being set up for his one timer. he's been abismal at the point on just about 95% of the PP's he's been on. also, shanahan does not play the point on the PP. He's generally off the wall (the gionta spot) and can drift to in front of the net. i'm still scratching my head on this one. the team does not need more leadership - they really have plenty of it. i'm also not sure that shanny gives that "different voice" or energy boost that might put a spark into these guys. for the most part, they are a solid hard working team. the latest two weeks has seen a decline in effort from the max they were getting in november but that's only natural in a long season, as much as it pains me to say it. they are not as skilled and talented as Detroit and SJ (or even Boston for that matter) where they can just get by on skill alone. Parise, who is the best forward save Elias, is not even the most skilled. But he is the hardest working forward in hockey and has good enough skill to translate those into very good play. the kaberle thread highlights what, if anything, the devils really need which is a 20+ minute 1st pairing defenseman with good offensive instincts that can move the puck very well. of course, these guys don't grow on trees and if Paul Martin is not going to be that guy (which he hasn't for the last 10 games or so), then the devils have a problem.
