If the Isles beat the Rangers tonight...

Do you think Renney will go?

Yes. I've been saying that for a week, but losing to one of your arch rivals- who also happen to be the worst team in the league- on home ice I think would be the final straw. If they lose tonight and Renney doesn't get fired, I don't think they will fire him this season.

I kinda think at this point since he wasn't fired after the Devils game, he's going to finish out the season and if they miss the playoffs THEN he's gone (this way too it buys Sather another season to screw things up more under a different stooge coach!)

Through non bias eyes... Renney should stay. He's a great coach, his team just doesn't have what it needs. I know it may not be popular, but I think the Rangers should sell at the deadline and rebuild for next year. Unfortunately, a lot of those contracts are unmovable.

Ultimate solution: Fire Sather.

Devils solution: Fire Sutter, keep the team intact and extend Sather's contract.

Do the Devils clinch the metro ice challenge with an Isles win?

Not sure I follow...

I don't see them firing Renny until they fall out the top 8. With the team as it is now, I don't think anyone that comes in will be able to make much of a difference unless they bring in some scoring help, especially on the PP.

Would another coach magically turn Gomez, Drury and Zherdev into point-per-game players? Would he fix Redden's game or make Lundqvist stop more pucks? The team just isn't very good, and firing Renney might give them a kick in the ass but I really don't see them being much of a threat.

Better news: if the Isles win tonight, and then lose to the Canes tomorrow, the Rags will officially no longer be in the top 8!

How's that? The Hurricanes trail the Rangers by 5 points.

As much as I hate the Rangers and would love for them to miss the playoffs, the chances of them not making it are pretty slim. There's basically six teams in play for the last four spots in the Eastern Conference: Montreal (57 GP, 66 PTS), Florida (57 GP, 66 PTS), Buffalo (58 GP, 66 PTS), the Rangers (58 GP, 66 PTS), Carolina (58 GP, 61 PTS), and Pittsburgh (58 GP, 60 PTS). I can't really consider Ottawa (56 GP, 53 PTS) or anyone below them in the standings playoff contenders. Does anyone really think Carolina or Pittsburgh will do enough to threaten the Rangers? They're really the only legitimate threats to the Rangers, and that's assuming that Montreal, Florida, and Buffalo can stay in contention as well.

As bad as they've been lately, if the Rangers go NHL-.500 over their next 24 games (basically, notch 24 points), they'll finish with 90 PTS. It's not impressive, but that will probably be enough to get them in. They're really going to have to go in the tank not to make it. They're not as bad as they've looked lately.

76, they are still a bad team. they have a decent defensive scheme with d men prone to errors. a solid goaltender. and no offense. they are a bottom 10 offense at the best of times with this group.

i am very surprised that renney wasn't fired after the debacle with the blues but the ax is coming and coming before the end of the season. the rangers are a legitimately bad team and they're in the playoffs - things like this are why the west is a stronger conference. i'm going to say it because i don't care - i would like to face this rangers team in the 1st round.

this goes back to the problem that too many teams make the playoffs. i would love to see less playoff slots but know it would never happen.

Which could be tonight ~ If I read the standings correctly this morning, that could happen with a regulation loss tonight to NYI. They still would be tied in points and wins, but the Rags would have 1 more loss.

Oh I'm not saying they're not a bad team...they are, and you and me and many others here knew that their early shootout wins were hiding a world of ills. But the teams below them have a ton of issues too: Carolina actually has an even WORSE goal differential, and Pittsburgh couldn't even beat the Islanders.

Re: Renney...if he's not canned by the end of the season, imagine if Ranger ownership FINALLY came to their senses and said to Sather "You want to fire him, fine, but consider YOURSELF fired along with him, because you're not getting the opportunity to hire another coach." That's really what should happen over at MSG, but such a decision would require intelligence on the Rangers' part. Not going to happen.

They're going to be in the top 8 for the forseeable future. They're 5 up on Carolina.

I'd agree, except that lower-seeded teams sometimes get to the SC Finals. Anaheim did it as a #7 seed when they faced the Devils back in '03. Edmonton reached the '06 Finals as a #8. And when Calgary faced Tampa Bay, they made it as a #6. Vancouver faced off against (bleech!) the Rangers in the '94 Finals as a #7. Even though the lower seed lost all four Finals, all four series went seven games. So you can't really contract the number of teams making it (we both know it would never happen, but as you can see it's not like lower-seeded teams can't make an impact).
