Triumph
First off, someone on here had this idea, whether it was DP26, DD56, sundstrom, dr33 - *someone* did, and I dismissed it. We have more information now, and I think Mr. Bergeron is at least a possibility, albeit remote. The Bruins are at $58.1 million with an estimated $4 million for Phil Kessel. Now Kessel may get nothing, and lose (good day sir!), but the Bruins still don't have a backup goalie, and Tuukka Rask has a large-ish cap hit for a backup ($850,000). So even with Kessel at $1M, it still puts the Bruins dangerously close to the cap with 56.1 million for 21 players, and certainly puts them over the cap next season when Kessel is arbitration eligible and Lucic and Wheeler are both due for new contracts. Someone has to go, with the most likely candidates being Patrice Bergeron and Marco Sturm. So how's about: Devils acquire Patrice Bergeron Bruins acquire Jay Pandolfo, Matthew Corrente, and a 2nd round pick in 2010 Bergeron is UFA in 2 years, so if he's a disaster he's not here for long. But this is someone who had 3.83 shots per game as a 20 year old in 2005-06. He has the concussion problems, true. But he slides right in on the 2nd line. The problem is, the Devils would have to find a place to dispose of Zubrus or Salvador, preferably Zubrus, as without both Salvador and Corrente the backline looks barren. They'd have a cap hit of $48 million in 2010-11 without Paul Martin, which basically means good-bye Paul Martin, (although the market for him is basically limited to Minnesota). Anyway, I thought of this yesterday, but it's really all too complicated to make it work - the Devils really can't add a big salary like this.
