Now- take a case like the Red Wings top prsopect. Let's say that Easton had signed this kid to a trillion dollar deal, but now he's hurt & may never live up to his potential as a top pick (like that's never happened), does he have to give back the $$$$?

Probably not, unless it's written into the contract like that. Even then, it's probably a clause to just end the contract at that point.
