NewarkDevil5
I don't really understand the nuances of the Cap, but is there any way to get out of Rolston's cap-hit short of trading him?
Triumph
like in Casino when deniro said to pesci after pesci's character got blacklisted from every casino in las vegas and was wondering if he could get around it: "no, there's no way." Devs3cups
What if he retires? HAHAHA! If we could clear him we could sign a good D or maybe even Kovy...
HellOnICE
Nope, he was signed over 35 - the only way out of it is a trade, or maybe a situation where he's suspended?
Blown01NJ
Lou should just offer him some scratch on the low to get the fvck out of here.

HA, baseball batting him (and his brother?) in the middle of the desert would take care of his cap hit. "Leave him alone he's still breathin!" Hopefully he will take a buyout and enjoy retirement...I like the guy, but he just does not do anything for us at this juncture of his career. newarkdev01
I think Lou sits on this saying, I've paid him already, he has scored in the past and with the right combo he may get hot again. It doesn't seem as if he is keeping another performing piece from getting ice time. Edited February 13, 2010 by newarkdev01

devils26
Could we theoretically get rid of his cap hit by sending him to Lowell? I realize that will never happen; I'm just curious. Edit: I checked the CBA and it looks like putting him in Lowell would only save us $100,000. I also vote ZUBRUS. I like ZZPops and like to see Elias at wing, with Kovy and Zubrus centering them. The bottom 2 lines will probably be rotated about 137x before the playoffs start. I would like a Rolston/McAmmond/Clarkson line
Devils Pride 26
If we could somehow pull off signing kovy, the majority of that money would come from Rolston's cap hit. If that were to happen i'd send our 2011 first rounder with Rolston somewhere for a 3rd. I think we can justify trading two first rounders in a row because kovy is young and is almost certainly better than any of the picks in the mid 20's are most likely to turn out. Amberite
Yes Kovy is feasible if Rolston is traded and Pando comes off the cap next year. That right there is 7.5 million, and I think 8.5 - 9 million would secure Kovy, IF he wanted to stay here. Unfortunately, that's a big if. Devils Pride 26
Pando can be sent to lowell and the hit removed. i'm not worried about that at all
NewarkDevil5
I think that Kovalchuk would accept a 8.5 mill/year 3 year contract with this team. My biggest reason for wondering what will happen with regards to Kovalchuk is that no matter whether or not you believe Lou Lamoriello saying that he doesn't believe in superstars and promoting them, we've been promoting superstars for the past fifteen years in the form of the now retired Scott Stevens and Marty Brodeur who is very likely going to retire within the next couple of years. It would occur to me that Jeff Vanderbeek wants to continue to have a face for this team and I'm thinking that maybe they've decided that Kovalchuk could be that player. Parise is a great player, but he is just not the kind of flash and dash that is easy to sell. His highlights are usually somewhat ugly goals from in close. Elias is getting older and just doesn't have the consistency that he used to. Besides, he's not nearly as established a star in this league as Kovalchuk. Before we built a team around Stevens, we had a team built around guys like Brendan Shanahan, Sylvain Turgeon, Kirk Muller, Pat Verbeek, etc. Even when we lost Shanahan and got Stevens Lou didn't insist on the defensive style of this team until we had a franchise goalie to build around. I'm curious to see whether Vanderbeek and Lou take steps to ensure that we continue to have a franchise player to build around.

Vanderbeek (and Lou) would want to keep Kovy because he is a great player. He will help us tremendously and his offensive talent is mind blowing. The organization DID NOT bring him in to be "the face of this team." The face of the team for the future will be ZACH PARISE. He does not need the "kind of flash and dash that is easy to sell." He is the hardest working player in the NHL, AMERICAN, young, charismatic, etc etc. The list can go on forever. All the fans love him, the ladies love him...He IS the future captain and franchise player for YOUR NEW JERSEY DEVILS! While Kovy is great, he is not in the same position as Zach currently is... NewarkDevil5
I agree that Parise is the future captain of this team and is the most complete player we've got, but if Kovalchuk signed a longterm contract, you'd probably find yourself with just as many Kovalchuk jerseys in the crowd as Parise jerseys within a year or so. I don't think so. Jerseys also do not equate to being "the face of the team." Zach was drafted by the Devils, came up through their farm system and groomed by them. He is homegrown through and through. He is an AMERICAN which definitely means something to alot of people and has a great relationship with the fans. No matter what happens down the line, Kovy cannot be a homegrown player. He was brought in from the outside, a hired gun. Don't get me wrong, I love Kovy, but Zach is very different in my opinion and I am sure many others' as well....
sokar
in order for the devils to sign kovalchuk they would have to let martin go. rolston is not going to be traded, he signed a lot term contract for his family. you maybe able to trade pandolfo if you sit him down and tell him he is either being sent down next year or he is going to be a scratch for most of the year. you guys are just going to have to stand rolston for another 2 years
