CarpathianForest
If what that update from ESPN is correct about Lou knowing beforehand then I'm sure he informed Kovy and Grossman of what the NHL's reaction would probably be. I doubt Lou would keep Kovy and Grossman in the dark about a possible denial from the NHL.

njdevil26
If it's true, then what does it mean? That they are saying the hell with it and he's a free agent again? That they have a new contract ready?
Pepperkorn
I think it's pretty arrogant on your part to continue to post as if you're absolved from explaining yourself after the display you carried out. You have some explaining to do before you carry on any further around here. Time to grow up, Ray. Yeah!! Why don't you boycott the board until he does, Ken? jim777
Appealing means fighting and arbitration with other parties involved - restructuring the deal and resubmitting that original deal makes a boatload more sense. Don't let the semantics freak anyone out here. Edited July 21, 2010 by jim777
Amberite
If it's true, then what does it mean? That they are saying the hell with it and he's a free agent again? That they have a new contract ready? I highly doubt they are saying to hell with it. It would mean that they are drafting a new contract, which I really hope that they don't, because it makes Bettman look like the winner. We should go to arbitration and fight this thing to the end.

jim777
There is a new CBA coming shortly, so there will be plenty of time for Lou to make Bettman his prisoin b!tch. We should just do a quick little reastructure to raise the cap hit a bit and cut a year or three, and pick our battles with the league. With Kovy on the line now is not the best time to pick a fight, IMHO. Edited July 21, 2010 by jim777

Triumph
the devils really don't have the recourse to appeal the filing. everything i see in the CBA is about the NHLPA.
Scott Stevens #4
Those this mean we could lose Kovy, or is it like a little thing, like take off two years or something like that. What I mean is, is it a big deal? Kovy is a Devil untl all of this gets settled thru legal procedures and if all fails at the end and Kovy decides to negotiate with another team or perhaps the KHL again then theres siigns of worries. But Kovalchuk said it himself he wants to be a Devil. So no worries.....yet

DaneykoIsGod
Interesting stuff from TG: The NHL Players’ Association also has yet to respond or say if it will file a grievance on Kovalchuk’s behalf. The union, which is still in the process of hiring a new excecutive director, has five days to file a grievance.... The Devils do not have an avenue in the CBA for challenging the contract rejection. It is possible that would they challenge it in a legal court, though. It would not be the first time they took such a measure (see 1988 Jim Schoenfeld-Don Koharski incident). ... Kovalchuk’s age and the number of low-salary years at the end have not been matched in previous contracts like this. The 17 seasons also would make it the longest contract in league history. There are plenty of examples, however, of NHL players who played well into their 40s. Chris Chelios played in the league at 48 this past season. Center Igor Larionov played for the Devils at age 43 in 2003-04 before retiring. Mark Messier was also 43 in his final season for the Rangers – also 2003-04. CarpathianForest
I imagine Kovy was offered a few contract scenarios. 17yrs/102mil was what Kovy liked and then a couple more alternatives were what he could live with.
