If it's 13/100 or even 13/98, I will be pretty pissed.
Allthegoodnamesweretaken
I can't see the league taking the 5 days. I bet by tonight or tomorrow the latest we will know.
Amberite
DarrenDreger 15 years, around $100 mil is close...according to source. It's going to be interesting to see if the league approves NJ's latest attempt.

iamtheprodigy
15/100 would be a $6.66 mil cap hit. After that we can go sign Miro Satan and everyone will be happy.
NJayDevil
dreger saying it's 15 years around 100 million. i don't see how the league accepts such a contract. jagknife
13/98 is a painful cap hit to swallow. If the back is heavier than Hossa's, I don't see why not. it sounds like the devils' main selling point is the more uniform distribution of cash through the life of the deal that is how they might win this round, with minimal variation in salary changes. Amberite
The reports are saying that the new contract takes care of the problems the league has had with various proposals over the past several weeks. If it is indeed 15 years, then we have to assume that the league is OK with that amount of years. It must have been other issues (NMC / NTC, etc) that the league was having issues with. And just another confirmation of the 15 years: TGfireandice I too hear 15 years $100 million as approx numbers on new Kovy contract. The number of years could still be sticking point. dejaentendu2101
If it's really 15 years, they won't accept it. Why waste the time?
CMONPETEYD
What about those contracts that come out at 12:01 PM on July 1st. Those Pre Approved? Or just Tampering?
newarkdev01
From what I remeber of the arbitrator ruling it was the odds of him playing given how few players have played past 40(but then again, how many players are there that have performed at Kovys level)and then the massive drop off (Maybe thats the second sticking point for Kovy, more back end money on the deal
DaneykoIsGod
If it's really 15 years, they won't accept it. Why waste the time? Depends on how the money's spread out and how No-Move/No-Trade/both clauses are used.
Triumph
Remember, there's been at least one 15 year contract already approved by the NHL. So 15 years isn't anything new to the NHL. it's not the length - it's the fact that kovalchuk is 42 at the end of it, making it unlikely he'll be playing. So if there is more back end money, less obvious NMC NTC or at least ones that don't make it clear it looks like a 7 year deal at 70 mil then does that hold water. jagknife
if the deal ends up being 15 yrs/$100 million then: kovy must have a clause in the deal to have a personalized goal song The goal song must be: My link
SatansDevils
Don't see a problem with the league accepting the 15/100. It all depends on how the remaing 5-years or the back end of this deal is structured. At $6.66 is not bad at all.

True but both Hossa and Luongo go to that age. Definitely weakens NHL's argument at any potential arbitration since they already approved deals going to that age. IMO, the bigger issue is how the money is applied to the back end.
Amberite
If the final years of the contract are $1.5-2M, and the NTC/NMC was fixed to the NHL's liking, I don't see why the league would reject it, 15 years or not. 42 is a very plausible age for a player to stay active until, and $3-4M is enough of an incentive to keep playing those extra 2 years.
