Lou didn't say he won't budge he said he can't budge. Lou ain't moving. Not cuz he doesn't want to just because after careful calculation, he realizes he can't. He already has enough on his plate trying to sign Kovy at the current offer.

Don't worry about Lou's cap!

Yes there is. You want to do everything you can to prevent him from "testing the market", which for Devils players, usually means he's sighing elsewhere.

This is more true for UFA's. We're better off waiting until next year when ZP9 is a RFA. I have confidence that we'll be able to offer him a good price that no other team wants to match.

Problem is, he would be going to arbitration, in which case he knows he's getting at least $6 million the following season, after which he can "test the market". See, e.g., Scott Gomez.

Kings will not have to dump any salary. Their big concern is what it will mean when it comes time to negotiate with Doughty, Jack Johnson and Wayne Simmonds. They're all RFAs, but Doughty is the kind of player that a team will be very tempted to give an offer sheet to, even if it means losing three/four first round picks.

If Kovy is gone, the Devils don't have any serious cap issues for the foreseeable future as much as nobody likes having Rolston on the team. If that's what happens (and I think it will) get on the phone with Parise ASAP and work out a long term deal.

Thanks, Daniel...to me, that sounds like the most reasonable outcome and Lou is, above all, a reasonable man. Also, to the person who said that Devs are like a pepper ladden sandwich, yeah the team is old but youth doesn't neccessarily translate into good. Chicago is so good because they were terrible to the point of almost folding for a bunch of years and got a bunch of great first round picks. Like Daniel said, I pretty much think that if Kovy goes by the wayside, we'll be rolling into next season with the band as is. Nobody is going to give us anything of value for Rolly or White and I don't have any faith in our youth to pick up the slack. While the first part of last year really did prove me wrong, we don't have any potential superstars in the system (Joeferson (sp?) aside, but who knows if he's ready)

we are above the 10% above the cap space i believe. you have to be below it to have the go ahead to sign then clear space.

We're $4 million under a $59 million cap. If signing Kovy means we go above the 10% threshhold then you're talking $10 million a year. For that price I'd pack his bags and let him go to Russia. Or chip into the Kings' fund-raiser to sign him.

That's fair. If you believe he's going to arbitration it's a bit more complicated. But after arbitration you still have time to lock him up to a long-term deal. But it is more dangerous.

I think the real issue here is that ZP9 might not want to sign now. He might want to see how next season goes before he signs a long-term deal.

what the hell are you talking about, TG has said no such thing

Lamoriello said waiting on Kovalchuk is not keeping him from conducting other team business as far as signing players.

Um where did TG say that? It's not on his twitter.

It certainly is.

I think you took that the wrong way. It was referring to Mottau. The idea was that the Kovy signing is not stopping anything else.
