For anyone not following Twitter... got some confusing reports.

First Єklund (2.3% accurate) (2.3% accurate) says the Kings are DEF out of it now. NJ or Russia is his final bet.

Brooks just tweeted :

"Complex" structure of Kovalchuk contract subimission to Kings almost certainly relates to--get ready for this term again--lockout season.

I do like the fact that, a few pages back, we were able to get back on-topic re: Kovy and the Devils. It's been a while since that's happened on the boards... we've all just been spinning our wheels and speculating the accuracy of SD, Єklund (2.3% accurate) (2.3% accurate), (N)Єverson, etc.

But let's face it, at this point if Kovalchuk signs with the Devils, it's going to need a "hockey discussion only" thread.

PS +1 to PK for incorporating Mel Brooks.

I think at this point we can safely assume we are his second choice. I mean who wants to be someone's second choice? "Well I can't get what I really want to I guess I'll settle..."

We had so much ''I think at this point'' in this thread

As I said in another thread, this FA period has shown us two ends of the spectrum. On one end you have a guy like Kovy, who is not all about the Devils and only wants the money. Then you have guys like Clarkson who want to stay here forever, and you have to honestly believe them when they say it. I would take a team of guys who play with as much heart as Clarkson, and who actually want to be here, over Kovy any day.

Thats what made this thread legendary!

So far we've referenced comic legends Monty Python, Mel Brooks, the Marx Brothers, and Mitch Hedberg in this thread. Epic.

Am I missing anyone?

Just because a guy is willing to die for you doesn't mean he'll accomplish anything besides dying with his devotion.

Reliable Source: Kings have offered Kovalchuk 12-year deal for AAV of $5.3M. Not going to happen. Might open door for short-term options.

What!? I think Lombardi smoked some weed before thinking that kovy would accept 5.3 mil per year.

If what NY post said is true lou offered Kovy 8.5 mil per year!

KOVY TO DEVILS! PLEASE GOD!:pray::pray::pray:

Honestly, if Lombardi really did offer Kovalchuk 12 years $63.6M, it's a huge slap in the face to Kovalchuk. If that's really the offer, after they came back to the Kings to try and work something out, I think talks between Kovalchuk and LA are as done as they can be.

This doesn't make any sense. I thought it was Kovy who was the one who made the offer today, and Kings were considering it.

EDIT: If it means that the Kings got back to him so soon, Grossman could have really overplayed his hand, if in (N)Єverson's reports of the Devils offer is true.

He might have made an offer, and this was the Kings' response. Or slap in the face. Whichever you prefer.

It is one of those front loaded contracts. The first 7 years is probably somewhere competitive with that what was previously reported was our offer (although given the rest of the report who knows how accurate that report was), it is the final 5 years of the contract where the salary drops off (dramatically) and brings the cap hit down.

Now I don't think that will get it done. First off I don't think Kovalchuk wants to do one of those contracts, and two if Lou wanted to he could probably do the same with a few more dollars at the end to top. That is if Lou wants to do one of those long term deals (that's unknown).

Perhaps the calculus from the Kings standpoint is that he shouldn't get much more than what Hossa agreed to.
