Rock
http://www.msg.com/blogs/stan-fischler/to-rangers-and-devils-fans-the-sky-isn-t-falling-1.45564 Martin -- as a loss to New Jersey -- hardly is catastrophic; if it is a loss at all. Lamoriello immediately nabbed Anton Volchenkov, the NHL's best shot-blocker, and Henrik Tallinder, arguably better than Martin on the best day Paul ever had. As a matter of fact, Martin being signed by the Penguins could very well be a case of addition by subtraction. Perhaps it was the residue of his wounds, perhaps not. What matters is that Andy Greene can do just about everything Martin could do and the additions of Volchenkov and Tallinder signal a better fortified defense. elias2600
Wow, pretty harsh words for Martin. In some ways he is right, but still harsh.
Devils Dose
I sure want to believe that everthing that's happened is for the better, but WOAH.
GA Devil
Yeah, I never saw Paul as a difference maker either. However, after reading several posts I'll admit I might have been wrong about that. Still, what Fischler is writing here seems like "He's no longer a Devil, so he's not good anymore" kind of stance. Wonder what he would have wrote had the Devils retained Paulie? elias2600
Martin is not a chump player or anything, but I think Stan just exaggerated his point that he is not a game-changer or anything.
NJDevils1214
I don't agree with his comment on Tallinder, he seems more like a guy you don't notice is there which isn't bad but martin jumped into the play and scored some big goals.
sundstrom
paul martin?! if he was so great, he'd have a better +/-. stan - it's a big loss. sorry.
Satans Hockey
Stan is reaching a bit here with the Rangers. I don't think you are going to find that many Ranger fans who think the sky is falling because they didn't sign Jody Shelley lol
ZeroGravityFat
i didn't think the sky was falling, quite the opposite, we have a stevens v.2 and a great backup goalie that can win any game, the cup is building is what i was thinking, we lost a fragile martin so big deal. halfsharkalligatorhalfman
Pretty lame attacks from Stan. Martin played great in New Jersey. "As a matter of fact, Martin being signed by the Penguins could very well be a case of addition by subtraction." - What? how? He never backs this up with any statements indicating Martin was a minus to the team, only that he wasn't as good as Scott Niedermayer. Which only 2 or 3 D-men in this league are. we have a stevens v.2 ...lets not get ahead of ourselves. He's a nice open ice hitter and can block shots, but he's nowhere near Stevens in terms of ability. ZeroGravityFat
i was just commenting on the scaring of the goal scorer, they won't take liberties going into the zone anymore knowing they can be taken out for good. plus stevens' new assignment can be training the a-train to be stevens 2.0, how scary would that be? Pepperkorn
paul martin?! if he was so great, he'd have a better +/-. stan - it's a big loss. sorry. No, it isn't. I'm confident you'll see that as the season progresses
Devilsfan118
I agree with stan's general position...but wow, tone it down a bit. Sheesh

Amberite
Our defense with Volchenkov and Tallinder is LEAGUES better and tougher than it was with Martin, but there will be some offense missed with the loss of Martin. Not much, but still there. Edited July 2, 2010 by Amberite

Devs4LIFE
Stan must be missing the point of Paul Martin and his presence on the Devils, he wasn't an underachieving offensive defenseman, he was a shutdown defenseman with offensive upside.
