Caps sign top pick D Eminger to three-year contract

October 7, 2002

WASHINGTON (Ticker) - The Washington Capitals on Monday signed defenseman Steve Eminger, their first of three first-round picks in the June draft, to a three-year contract.

Terms were not disclosed.

Eminger had two penalty minutes in five preseason games and was the last draft pick in camp for the Capitals.

The 6-2, 200-pound Toronto-area native was chosen 12th overall after ranking fifth in scoring among Ontario Hockey League defensemen last season with 19 goals and 39 assists in 64 games.

Washington, which opens the season Friday against Nashville, pruned its roster Monday by assigning forwards Chris Ferraro and Peter Ferraro and defensemen Jason Doig and Nolan Yonkman to Portland of the American Hockey League.
