grcenter47
Apparently the Devils are now considered a joke on the radio now. I caught this while going to the gym while listening to the Steve Somers show on WFAN. He was taking hockey questions on the show and apparently the one caller who did call about the Devils was someone who was talking incoherently and slurring his speech. The caller was talking about why Lou doesnt get young people like Tedenby...etc and it was tough to understand him. While the guy was talking, Steve Somers was playing the Flatliner beeping noise you hear from a Life Support Machine. I am assuming he did this to prove that our team is dead. He also began saying how the Devils should go back to the playing the trap and how Marty is too old. I have listened to this guy a lot and I know he does everything in jest, but I was just mad hearing all this. He then want a tangent on how the Rangers are so good...etc Just wondering if anyone caught this or if my interpretation was right

No seriously, I know that it isnt the best start to the season for us *understatement* but come on....dead? The only thing that I have heard from Ranger fans in rebuttal to me giving them a rather subtle ass raping verbally, is "Yeah well Marty is old." Thats the only thing they got on us. Devil Dan 56
A lot of people have been anxiously awaiting the day that the Devils were a bad team, and they are all very very happy right now. They piled on this team when it was winning cups. What did people expect to happen?

Quinn01
Its not just WFAN thats pro-rags. I have found that MSG is pro rags (I wonder why....) but even like Stan Fischler....he talks so much sh!t about the Devils. It makes me nuts. Stupid old man. eldon
Win or lose, good times/bad, we're always a joke in the ny media, radio, sny, etc. There are few or no advocates, except maybe Lagreca. All about entertaining the masses...yada yada....

njskaguy33
I don't know, I think you may be overreacting a bit. To me, the flatline was probably in reference to the awful caller who just happened to be talking about the Devils, much like O&A used to play the "oncoming train crash" sound effect when they would get bad callers. Still, even if it was a dig at the Devs, you can't say the teams play hasn't warranted it. This whole season has been one big flatline thus far, and like someone said, the New York media has been salivating for a failure like this for over a decade now. The pot shots are to be expected although I'm surprised they haven't been as fervent with them as I thought they would be. My theory is that even the media doesn't know what to make of the terrible record. If they did, you would read about this team constantly but I think most sports writers are as mystified by this start as the rest of us. DevsMan84
Sports radio guys are always horrible at hockey, so do not expect any better from them. All of their analysis comes from what they read on yahoo sports and that morning's NY Post. I have caught many times these radio guys doing that, especially Mike and the Mad Dog back in the day. They totally ignore hockey and hate talking about it. This is why they resort to regurgitating everything they read in the paper and online and have no thoughts of their own. That and that they hate the fact that hockey is not as stat-driven sport as the other major sports, especially baseball, so they can't kill time with the few hockey stats available. pattyelias
Steve Somers shtick is annoying but what did he do that was so wrong? The Devils are playing terrible and the Rangers look pretty good right now. Did you expect him to sing the praises of Kovalchuk and the Devils. People need to lighten up right up around here. If the Rangers spent $100M on a player and were 5-11-2 you would all be laying into them.
xxchaznjxx
he's been waiting 15 yrs for the devils to struggle and the rags to be playing well. it's finally his time to shine. he has always ripped the devils, regardless of how we were doing, mostly attendance jokes. i never take anything he says seriously. Jerrydevil
he has always ripped the devils, regardless of how we were doing. Not always ... he used to be a Devil fan. He jumped ship, I think after the Devils dealt Pat Verbeek.

Gunslinger27
He's playing with us, setting the bait........ It's all about Ratings my friend.... Tis all stirring the pot. Thats years of frustration. The season isnt over yet !!!!!!!!! The Marty comments, well there is an age issue. We really need to start looking for some young goalie talent possible via trade. Hedberg is not the answer, he's old too.
peteyvegas
Relax out there. I had the pleasure of sitting next to Sommers a few years back at a Nets game. The guy loves his sports. In fact, he was talking to me out of the side of his mouth, so as not to look like he was ignoring his date ( who was a blond bombshell, by the way). He's also mature enough to know that sports happen every year and it's not the end of the world if his team wins or loses that year. He likes all the New York teams (devils included) and likes to poke fun at everything he can. He's a gentleman and a lot of fun to be around. So take it easy. If you cant tell he's kidding half the time, I'm telling you now!! HE'S KIDDING HALF THE TIME!!!!
