  1. That's a solid trade for Carolina. That could be a mid to late teens pick if Kings can't finish strong. McKeown was once a hot draft prospect a few yrs back but he fell in his draft year. Not a bad prospect gamble though for Carolina for a rental player and in being the 2nd piece of the deal.

  2. I think those quotes from Jagr are supporting the rumours about him asking a trade after Deboer got fired but Lou didnt want to trade him cause they were "in the race". There's no way to know for sure but it's certainly fitting with everything we're seeing

I think there's some bad blood between Oates and Jagr.

  3. Boucher is still only 21. I don't know why everyone is writing him off. He's having a tough season but they're also not putting him on the top line and so his linemates have been pretty brutal.

His play has been pretty brutal at times hence why he's playing down on the lines. I'm not giving up entirely but I've always been a bit skeptical on him.

  4. I think people need to prepare for the possibility that nothing exciting happens on trade day. We may have to sell low depending on the market

I'm fine with Lou doing nothing if the value isn't there for him but he needs to roll fast and hard with a retool this offseason.

  5. Franson just went for a 1st. I don't understand why anyone thinks that Zidlicky wouldn't garner at least a low 2nd. Makes no sense to me.

He went in a package deal. Franson has size, a real good shot and is probably better defensively than Zidlicky by a decent margin. At this point hes a better player than Zidlicky too. People need to take their Devils colored glasses off sometimes.

Jagr has looked awful for a good chunk this season.

The Zidlicky talk is probably moot as it sounds like he won't waive his NTC.

  6. I think the Devils may need to take one of those conditional deals for a first, where of the team makes the 2nd or 3rd round of the playoffs they get a first.

Don't see anybody doing that for Jagr or Zidlicky. A 2nd is probably the best we can do and even that may be pushing it.

  7. yeah, Im giving lou these next two years of drafts and 2016 FA. I think Lou has built up enough good will to be granted that :koolaid:

if we dont find some decent forwards by then he can step away

By then you've thrown away two or three years and prime years for Schneider. And youre still in a rebuild situation.

  8. Stick with Merrill.  You have to hope that having either Severson or Larsson with him can get his game to where it belongs.  It's unclear how good Zidlicky is anymore, so playing with him may not be helping.  If Merrill's not the guy, so be it, but this team shouldn't be making any long-term commitments to a player over 29 this off-season.

Plus, there's not much available.  Andrej Sekera is good, then what?  It's not a robust market.

Sekera is probably going to get about 5.5m a year.  Andy Greene type deal.

Your proposition on Merrill is reasonable.  But he's been really bad at times this year.

  9. The thought now becomes, how do you divide the minutes next season between Severson and Larsson. Severson was putting up elite numbers as a 20 year old with tough minutes. Does NJ sign a quality 2nd pair defensmen for Severson to play with or do you hope Merrill figures it out.

I think you sign an insurance policy type at the least.  I've been really disappointed in Merrill this year.  His stock has taken a big hit.

Tough decision but for me I would hope Merrill figures it out, rather throw big money at a quality forward in the next few years than have it tied up in a defenseman. We have plenty of those in the cheap

There really aren't any top line good forwards coming onto FA.  And the Devils probably will have enough money for probably two 2nd tier forwards over the next few years considering all the money they have coming off the cap.

  10. I haven't watched much of Nashville this year.  I have never been impressed with Shea Weber's ability to pass the puck.  I don't give a sh!t if he can fight, shot blocking is hardly a valuable skill, nor is hitting, nor is being huge, and if Shea Weber's fast, so is Dainius Zubrus.  Weber to me is good positionally, he has an amazing shot, and he's a good guy to have on your PP.  Take away that shot - give him an average one - and I don't think he's in my top 20 D.  He's a valuable player, because that shot is responsble for a lot of goals, and he's a top-pair D who doesn't get beat, but he's not a top pair D who beats the other team.  He's not Scott Stevens.

Weber is a guy who when he hits a "Zubrusesque" wall, it'll be ugly, especially with that cap hit.  Probably only a few years away too from happening at this point.

  11. Oates will be the last coach Lou ever hires then... Because when he sucks (and he will), I think the owners say 'enough of this garbage'. Oates is an awful coach.

While I think Lou survives one more offseason I think and have heard rumblings the new owners may be pushing for some front office changes and transition planning soon where Lou would sort of be a senior president but relinquish GM and oversight of scouting to a new person.

  12. Pens had high hopes for Bennett seizing one of the wing spots. The fact they went out and got Perron kind of tells how the new regime views him. I know Shero and company were high on him.

I think Bennett can play RW which is a black hole for us.

  13. Buffalo needs to make a move soon for a young goalie like a Fucale perhaps. Hackett looks like a dud.

Hopefully this move opens the trade floodgates a bit.

  14. Man, that's really unfair.

For one, like NJDevs4978 just alluded to...considering that Marty had come off an extended stretch of very good goaltending to wrap up 2012, Lou wasn't just going to say "Thanks for everything Marty, now get lost"...especially with no one else in the pipeline. It would've been nice if a guy like Frazee had been ready to step in, but he wasn't...which was probably the reason Hedberg was also re-signed. And with the lockout looming and another season possibly being lost, Lou signed Marty to two years. Yes, it was risky, given his age and miles. But you have to know that sometimes, due to a number of circumstances, sometimes you get "stuck" with a great player for a couple of rough seasons when he's at the end of his career. Were you bitching about Marty getting re-signed off the SCF at the time? Probably not.

And like DD56 said, when it didn't work out in 2013, Lou took care of it best he could. Got rid of Hedberg and went out and got a terrific young goalie, and clearly didn't defer to Marty to do it. The transition year was difficult, but at least the Devils clearly have a goalie who should be well above-average for at least five more seasons as long as nothing disastrous happens to him. Considering how the situation looked in 2013 with the Devils' goalie situation, I'll take it.

It's not unfair. It was a very messy situation the last few seasons and goaltending was not a strong suit. It is now and for the future. But let's not give Lou carte Blanche that he handled Brodeur or the transition fantastically because he didn't. Maybe I'm cold hearted but I don't get strung up by the emotions some of you other fans do.

I recognize I'm in the minority and it's only my opinion.

  15. Marty had leverage after that playoff run, he had at least one offer for millions more, Lou has to go two years. Maybe if it wasn't for the lockout Marty would have settled for one year but..

I'm not debating how things played out, but we all knew Marty was starting to cost the team some wins in prior years and creating some friction with how things were being managed. With the exception of the playoffs Marty was pretty poor in the SC finals season for a good chunk and even then he racked up a couple stinkers in the Panthers series where with a better performance it doesn't even get to a 7th game.
