U.S. gets Parise for world championship

    TSN.ca Staff

    5/4/2005

Two-time U.S. National Junior Team member Zach Parise will join the U.S. Men's National Team at the IIHF Men's World Championship in Austria.

Parise, a first round pick of the New Jersey Devils in the 2003 National Hockey League Entry Draft, recently completed the 2004-05 season with the Devils' top American Hockey League affiliate, the Albany River Rats.

In his professional debut, Parise finished second on the team in scoring with 58 points (18-40) in 73 games.

Prior to joining the River Rats, Parise played two seasons of NCAA Division I college hockey at the University of North Dakota (2002-04), while also representing the United States at both the 2003 and 2004 IIHF World Junior Championships.

After leading the U.S. National Junior Team to a fourth-place finish at the 2003 IIHF World Junior Championship with four goals and four assists, Parise was named the tournament MVP in 2004 with 11 points (5-6) as Team USA won its first-ever gold medal in the event. In addition, he joined the U.S. National Under-18 Team for the 2002 IIHF World Under-18 Championship, where he helped the United States to the first gold medal by any U.S. team in an A-Pool IIHF World Championship since 1933.

Parise will join the U.S. Men's National Team in Austria on Thursday.

  2. A very respected poster at HF has said that lockout is over and a deal will be announced tomorow. About 50 minutes ago another story leaked that Tim Taylor (Tampa player rep) beleives the lockout will be over tomorow.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

A very respected hockey analyst (Bob Mckenzie) just posted on HF that he has not heard the same info as the other poster, i believe Mckenzie on that one

(Updated) Sergei Gonchar received a head injury during a hockey game today when Magnitogorsk Metallurg played Moscow Dynamo at home. In the offensive end Sergei Gonchar was receiving a pass from Aleksei Kaygorodov but was checked hard by Aleksander Ovechkin. Sergei Gonchar fell on the ice and lost consciousness. He immediately was taken to local hospital with heavy concussion.

Gonchar spent some time in intensive care after he was brought to the hospital. The concern was that he regained and lost consciousness on the way to hospital. Seemingly, Sergei is ok now. The doctors found no neck or spinal injuries. Sergei says he does not remember how the incindent happened.

  4. Wasnt he expected to be a 40 goal scorer when he was developing in the NYR system??

Yeah, he and Lundmark were supposed to be stars.

    Check out his WHL numbers:

    GP G A Pts

    1998-99 Calgary Hitmen WHL 68 73 61 134

    1999-00 Calgary Hitmen WHL 61 59 52 111

    2000-01 Calgary Hitmen WHL 49 40 35 75

  5. From everything I have heard he is real good Top 5 D-man prospect for sure with Phaneuf, Suter, Barker, and Meszaros

Nice list to be a part of. Out of curiousity, what do you think about Taylor signing leaving the University of Minnesota early? He might have needed another year before turning pro. But if the AHL can quicken his development, maybe it will workout. Any thoughts?

Although he was a Freshman last year he is 21 and big 6'4"" 220, but still I would have rather seen him play first line at Minny with Harrington than have to fight for ice time on Hartford. But I would hope that the Wolfpack would have a better training staff than the the Gophers so maybe he can get his game honed better up there. I guess he will have a step up on other guys like Walsh, Jessiman, Potter, and Guenin.

kinda surprising he wont so late, no?

$2,000,000 transfer fee probably had something to do with it

Perezhogin suspended one year by AHL

    TSN.ca Staff

    5/7/2004

The American Hockey League has suspended Hamilton Bulldogs forward Alexander Perezhogin for the remainder of the playoffs and all of next season following a vicious stick swining incident in a playoff game last week.

Perezhogin was given a match penalty and immediately suspended by the league for what the AHL called a "a forceful, two-handed baseball-like swing" to the head of Cleveland Barons defenseman Garrett Stafford during Game 5 of their AHL North Division semifinal series on April 30.

Perezhogin, who is from Kazakhstan, read from a statement in Russian at a news conference in Hamilton and concluded in English with: ``Thank you. I'm very sorry.''

In his statement, translated into English, Perezhogin said: ``I deeply regret what happened in relation to this incident. I hope that Garrett Stafford's injuries are not serious and Garrett enjoys a full and speedy recovery.

``I have made efforts to speak with Garrett to convey my feeling. I have fully co-operated with the American Hockey League and the municipal authorities in Hamilton in relation to their investigation and I have answered all of their questions. I must say I did not intend to strike Garrett in the face and my intent was never to hurt or injure Garrett in any way.''

The AHL also suspended Stafford for six games for swinging his stick in a dangerous manner which struck the back of Perezhogin's helmet prior to the Bulldogs player retaliating with his stick.

"In determining the appropriate punishments, the AHL examined the game of April 30 in its entirety, reviewed medical reports from Hamilton General Hospital and the Barons' medical staff, and interviewed the players involved or their representatives." said AHL president David Andrews.

"While in my opinion the action of Mr. Stafford was clearly a contributing factor to the incident, the reaction by Mr. Perezhogin was indefensible in terms of both its nature and its real and potential consequences."

Andrews added that neither player had ever been disciplined by the AHL this season and Perezhogin did not incur a single major penalty or misconduct during the 2003-04 AHL season.

"This incident is fortunately not representative of the standard of competition that the American Hockey League and its players have stood for over the past 68 seasons," said Andrews, who pointed out that no other comparable incidents involving players of this nature had ever occurred previously in the AHL.

"Our players, coaches and fans have been shocked by the nature of this incident, and its widespread international exposure has dishonored our league and the sport of hockey."

Montreal general manager Bob Gainey said he wanted to speak with Perezhogin, his agent Don Meehan and the Bulldogs' management before deciding whether to pursue an appeal.

Gainey, who was at the news conference in Hamilton, said he did not anticipate such a lengthy suspension and his initial reaction to it was ``shock.''

In the game in question, Stafford and Perezhogin got tangled and went down in front of the Barons net. Stafford, while on the ice, took a one-handed swing over his head and his stick appeared to glance off Perezhogin's helmet.

The Hamilton forward, who was the first back to his feet, came back with a swing that struck Stafford in the face just as he got back to his knees.

Stafford went into convulsions and was taken to hospital. He suffered a Grade 3 concussion and needed 20 stitches to repair a facial cut.

Hamilton police are investigating the incident.

Barons coach Roy Sommer, whose team was subsequently eliminated by Hamilton, said Perezhogin should be banned from playing again in North America.

The Bulldogs are still in the AHL playoffs, down 2-0 to the Rochester Americans in the North Division final.

  10. Second Holy sh!t (and my favorite) - That hit on Kapanen was AWESOME. Sorry he got hurt and all, but he got NAILLLLLLLLLLLED. Couldn't even get to the bench, I've never seen anything like that, EVER. Closest I can remember is Stevens hit on Francis back in 2001, but that wasn't even close to the magnitude of that hit, WOW. I want to see it again.

  11. I am adding to this thread. But this was yesterday's game:

Sweden defeated Russia 3-2 led by Ranger goalie prospect Henrik Lundqvist. He turned aside 24 of 26 shots as Sweden improved to 3-0-0 with with 3-2 win over Russia on Tuesday in Ostrava.

    Nice Henrik

  12. Tugnutt blew the Jennings b/c Clemmy/Schwab allowed 7 goals in 7 starts wheraes Tugnut/Ellis allowed 25 in 9 starts

What I should have said was Clemmy/Schwab earned the Devils the Jennings
