  1. If an organization thinks Mark Fraser is useful and not a complete disaster, how can you trust them on any single observation. There isn't anything more simple to see out there.

It's easier to point out that Fraser is awful than it is to point out that any one player on the team is good.

Rephrase that from "If an organization thinks" to "If Lou thinks", because Lou is "the organization". And I'd be willing to bet any amount of money that Lou believes Fraser belongs on the team.

  2. I'm not really buying any of this. The game hasn't changed considerably. Penalties are at an all-time low, with referees swallowing their whistles nightly - clutch and grab isn't like how it was in the 2000s, but it's there. Defense still wins - we saw this last year as the playoff teams were by and large the teams that gave up the fewest shots. We're seeing this again this year. There's obviously a few bad moves in the last few years, but Lou isn't out of touch with what wins hockey games. Those Devils teams in the 90s and 2000s were loaded with offensive talent - they may have played a defensive game, but they had outstanding forwards most of the time.

Lou has a few problems - the biggest one is probably coming this year with his insistence on not giving performance bonuses - NJ isn't going to draft a Swedish player that they can cow into not taking bonuses. I wonder how many UDFAs he's lost out on because he refuses to do this. The other issue is that he doesn't really have the whole 'winning organization' thing to fall back on - the Devils are just another team now, and it's tough to justify those sorts of rules when you're a regular organization. I'm not 100% convinced that Lou has it in him to do the right thing - to basically plan as if 2015-16 will be a repeat of this year and to go upwards from there - but he hasn't shown that he's 'lost it' either.

As a very minor example, some in the organization suggested coming up with a third jersey as a way to help generate revenue, and Lou shut it down saying absolutely not. Yes, that's not important in the grand scheme of things but Lou runs the organization as if he owns it. He dictates the style of play, demands players and coaches adapt to his system, refuses to implement changes to the system, and micromanages the coaches. As for his drafting, it's been sub par (yes, we haven't picked in the top 10 but neither have the Rangers). And his free agent moves, outside of Cammy and Jagr, leave a lot to be desired (go back 10 years and see how many duds we've had). The game may not be passing him by but he's sure as hell not convincing anyone that he's at the forefront either.
  3. Lou will only tolerate coaches and players who "fit the system", meaning his system. If it means him taking control of the ship and running it aground to maintain that order, so be it. That's his philosophy. No player or coach will bring new ideas to the organization and change what Lou set in place in the early 90's. Not unless he's gone. And by all accounts, he ain't going anywhere. And when he does, he'll appoint his son successor and around and around we go. These owners won't step in to implement change. They're completely hands-off.

  4. Yup. Your first and second lines are made up of players that are I better than 3rd liners, except Cammalleri who might be a legit 2nd liner. That's a formula for losing and we won't win without a serious adjustment.

And, I don't think that's a problem that's going to be corrected in one off season, unfortunately.

I agree. I read the article with Elias' comments, basically him saying they need a sniper to score goals. That's all well and good but he and Zajac both get paid like All-Stars and neither is putting the puck in net. The team is saddled with NTC contracts to players like Elias, who are getting rewarded every year but not producing. But it's not just him. The forward and center positions on this team need a total house cleaning. Is Lou the guy to do it? I don't think so.

  5. Elias will never wear the "C" again....

I think Greene is the logical choice; I wouldn't be upset with Henny or Zajac getting it.   But I think Andy is the frontrunner by a good margine at this point.

Elias has played in 60 games, scored only 10 goals, and gets paid $5.5 million a year. On top of that, he complains about his "diminishing role".  If he receives the 'C' then Lou needs to get his head examined.

  6. Who the heck is offering him a contract when this one is up?

I'll give you one guess.... he's 72 years old, is of Italian-American descent, is said to roam the Prudential Center, and is good with math.

  7. Stephen Gionta.

Because he just hustles so darn hard, and truly represents what the Devils have become: old, slow, and untalented.

Hey, don't laugh, lol.  Gionta is a "Lou guy" above anything else, buys into the system 100%, and displays character. He may not have any talent but I could definitely see him getting the C.

  8. we cant give up this years or next years first rounders, imo not even for kessell. Id give up zajac + a D + 2nd(s)

Zajac, Larsson, 2015 2nd, 2016 2nd, would you exchange henrique for zajac?? would this be enough?

I would gladly give up Zajac and his $5+ mil/year salary. If it weren't for Parise and Kovalchuk he wouldnt be sniffing anything close to that. Him, Harrold, Gionta, top of my list to shove off. Then hopefully Patty retires instead of draining the bank for his $5.5 mil/year. At this point, he's getting more of a loyalty paycheck than anything else.

  9. I am not sure what the hell you want. No one is saying to get down and praise him. You said, "his ego is too large to admit things aren't working." And that is just wrong and I picked one example of many that shows that. So at this point Lou can't win. You say "he can't admit that there's a problem", you get responses saying "Ummm here's an example of him doing so" and then you respond with "Oh so we should just get on our hands and knees and praise him?" You are just angry for the sake of being angry.

An example of his ego being too large was when asked about offensive players needed next year his response was basically, "Yes, we need more offensive players but they have to buy into the system first and fit the organization's mold otherwise we're not interested". So, no...that's not really admitting things aren't working. That's an example of keeping the status quo and not accepting other ideas. Same goes for keeping Conte around all these years.

Anyway, feel free to go off on another hissy fit. I'm done.

  10. This speaks of nothing but being spoiled from too much winning. You're this mad at Lou for a few years of losing, followed by two decades of winning at a higher rate of any team in the league sans Detroit, that you want Lou to publicly shame himself? Perhaps you'd like him to cry on camera and admit that he sucks as a GM? Yes that would accomplish a lot.

Yes the problem is the uniform colors, low numbers, and no long hair or beards rule. And what a travesty that Lou, the GM, has GM powers. The Devils are soooo fvcked up. Oh and he can't admit that things aren't working? He has done so all season. He fired the coach no? Just the other day he said this team needs forwards and that that is a problem. But I get it. You also want Lou to be like "I suck. I am a terrible GM who has no idea what he is doing."

Lou obviously can't afford to let this team go through some inevitable losing years, or the fans are going to start calling for his head. Perhaps our fans believe that since the Red Wings were good for longer than us, we expect that we should be able to have that success too, no excuses. I mean this is soooo ridiculous.

As far as ice time goes, you have a point: there is no reason that Gionta and Zubrus should be getting so much ice time. Last night Zubrus and Gionta got more ES ice time than anyone else on the team. That said, you way overshot with your statement. Let's not pretend that there are many great candidates on this team to be getting a lot of ice time.

Ok, so he's stating the obvious and for that we should all get down on our hands and knees and praise him. As for the low numbers etc comment, I was just making a point, I didn't say it had an effect on the team's performance. Talk about flying off the handle....

Glad to know we can agree on one thing...great, super.

  11. The disappointment will continue because Lou's philosophy is "my way or the highway". He doesn't see what the fans see, and he doesn't care to see it. He has built an entire system from the ground up from defensive hockey first, to uniform colors, to low numbers, to no long hair and no beards. And he has final say on the draft and free agency. It has been this way for 30+ years so why does anyone think he's going to suddenly change what he does? He won't. And his ego is too large to admit things aren't working, so he will contine as President/GM until the organization is turned around....but only turned around with his philosophy in place. Forget new ownership, they're proving to be as hands off as McMullen. Lou runs this team like he owns it, and that won't change until he retires and names his son as successor.

As for the players, if you're a "Lou guy" you get unlimited ice time..despite your talent (i.e. Stephen Gionta). And that ain't gonna change either.

  12. But he works super duper hard, and that's apparently enough to warrant NHL playing time with this coaching staff.

I CAN'T HEAR YOU DEVILS FANS, STAND UP, MAKE SOME NOISE AND WAVE. THOSE. TOWELS!!!

Stephen Gionta is a Lou guy. He ain't goin' anywhere. As are Harrold and Zubrus. Whoever said Paul Martin would probably sign here in the off-season is probably right on the money too (especially with him being an ex-Devil)

  13. "We certainly will look at somebody within the framework of the system that we play. Defense first," he stressed. "But we also have to get some offensive players to complement that."

In other words, nothing will change and the same players who don't produce now will be complimented next year by players who also don't produce.

  14. Lou also said yesterday that the new HC would have to be defense first. That's the same strategy that has gotten us into trouble the last few years. He gets Ryder who is old, may have some scoring left never was a defensive player and they try to get him to players defense and it was a disaster for two years. He got Havlet who maybe can score and puts him on the checking line so he is never in the offensive zone. What thinking.

Someone buy Lou a time machine, because he's stuck in 1995.
