  1. If there's rumors, something must be cooking. Before there was dead silence, now we're hearing stuff. Remembering last offseason, when stuff started leaking about Kovalchuk Lou started up with the 'status quo', 'there's nothing new going on' and 'we'll do whatever it takes to keep Kovalchuk but nothing is going on' answers. Seems like he's back to the same answers when talking about what's going on with Zach. I know I may be grasping at straws, but hopefully it won't take all summer to get the guy signed this time.

  2. Sabres games are hardly ever shown on the MSG channels though, unless I'm mistaken. I remember being able to watch a Sabres game on NHL Gamecenter once, although I'm not sure if it was just a once in a while broadcast. Normally games shown on MSG are blacked out on there.

  3. I've always said to my siblings and friends who are Devils fans that the Devils should flip off MSG when their contract is up with them and go to the YES Network. And whatever games that won't be aired on the YES Network when baseball season starts, put on the NHL Network. Or vice versa for Yankee games and whatever the MLB channel is called. I think the Devils and the YES Network can work something out.

  4. I'd love for us to get Larsson, if he falls to us. I could see the scenarios in which he does fall to us happening but at the same time all it takes is one team above us making a surprise pick for those scenarios to become moot. Either way I'm still excited for June 24th.

  5. I really like what Gelinas showed in these games, especially tonight. He's going to give Albany a hell of a boost on the backend, especially when he gains more weight and puts more muscle on. Dude has a heck of a shot when he gets it off too

  6. If you get the NHL Network, the Memorial Cup Final will be on at 7. Hoping to see Gelinas and his Sea Dogs win the title!

Same here, have it set to record and everything.

  7. Honestly, I think one of the biggest problems for the Devils defense as of late is an inability to score goals and an inability to be consistent game-changers when it really matters. When playoff time arises, it's extraordinarily helpful when the D can jump into the play and score goals in key moments of the game. But as it stands right now, we generally don't have much hope that a Devils defensemen is going to be a savior in crunch time on too many occasions. As for the regular season, I believe the aforementioned analysis is probably correct. And my guess is that the Devils D next year, at least statistically, should be among the league leaders in the regular season. But come playoff time, the Devils need to have the ability to raise their defense to an 11 (Spinal Tap reference) or roll the dice with the consequences of a solid but unspectacular unit. Watching Zdeno Chara this spring, reflecting on how much of a difference Pronger made for both Edmonton and Philly, noting the steady dominance of the Detroit defense during their Cup runs and remembering how essential Stevens and Nieds were to the Devils postseason success (not to mention Nieds contribution to the Ducks playoff runs) and it's pretty clear that having a dominant first pairing who can score goals and change the course of the game in seconds is nearly priceless during the Stanley Cup playoffs. In sum, I don't think the Devils win the Cup until they acquire a truly elite defense.

I have to agree with this. Don't get me wrong, I believe the D men we have now are solid and will continue to be solid with proper coaching. However, we don't really have a proven number one or two guy who can be a game changer, who can score goals at key moments. I think that has more to do with the fact that a lot of our D men are actually really young and unproven. I do believe that one or two of them can develop into potiental number 2s or even number 1s who can be game changers in a couple years (Urbom is one of my favorite players right now actually) but right now our current defense as it is now does NOT rival the Devils D of the 90s. Might it in a couple years or so? Who knows. I would love to see that happen, and I believe it could very well happen. But right now we don't know.

  8. so i don't have a right to say what's true? the habs got significantly outplayed all throughout last year's playoffs - did i not have a right to say that?

boston's d sucks. they weren't good in the regular season, they've been better in the playoffs but still not good. their offense is strong (aside from their PP) and their goaltending is obviously superb. that's how they have gotten to where they are.

Uhh. Guess we'll have agree to disagree here.

Can we quit the bullsh!t about NJ defense being some kind of "sleeper defense".

Please, our defense hasn't even been able to sniff a second round in years, much less a conference final.

I'd take Chara any day over any (3) of our current defensemen.

Sure, they are terrible compared to Neider/Stevens/Dano/Rafi - maybe even Lidstrom/Rafi/Kronwall/et all - but short of maybe VAN they get the job done - and that's why they are there. They also get much less help from the forwards than our group. Weren't you just saying the other day that the Bruins didn't have any strong defensive forwards - and that is why they will lose this series?

Our D looked "passible", yes PASSIBLE - only because of what our forwards do to cover their asses (see our offense production issues) and strong positional play from Lemaire.

Over a 7 game series they would be POUNDED to a PULP and exposed - over 2 or 3 rounds - I can't even imagine.

We have zero depth - if Anton or White goes down - who finishes a series Greene, Fayne, Tallinder, and who? Yeah, I'd go to Vegas on those odds.

Yes, for a defensive-minded coach and as much talent is back there, and Thomas standing on his head - they should be tighter then they are. But who knows how banged up they are?

One thing is for sure - our defense is as thin and soft as paper - a few injuries and look out. We also still seriously lack the #1A stud leader pushing those guys and logging 30 minutes when needed.

You may not like them , and there is a wealth of criticism out there for gaffs - but raw talent alone they trump us - over and over.

This. But I do not want to say our D depth is paper thin as much as it's really young and unproven. I feel we'll get better as time goes on. But we do obviously need that true number one guy.

  9. you guys are watching a different team than i am. how many goals has boston given up in this series? chara is excellent, seidenberg is okay, the rest are awful. NJ's defense is miles better (in part because they play better team defense at the cost of offense - boston is looking to push the pace a lot more, which doesn't seem to make sense, given that their D is super slow)

The Bruins are one win away from advancing to the Finals. I don't think we have a right to say their D is terrible. Also, Tampa has excellent coaching, a high powered offense and a Steven Stamkos who is coming alive in a big way; they ARE gonna score goals.

  10. I don't know why, but I am not feeling ANY of these teams right now. But I am still watching, and I do hope the Sharks win tonight.

Same here. I was pulling strongly for the Preds and Sabres from the Playoffs start and then the Sharks when they both were knocked out. But now I'm kind of indifferent. Just goes to show the playoffs mean little when the Devils aren't in it. Truth be told I'm simply REALLY looking forward to the Draft.

  11. My most recent favorite moment was Urbom scoring that wraparound goal against Boston, this season. Ultimately winning that game didn't really mean anything. But I had been telling people "Just wait, Urbom's gonna get called up from Albany and he's gonna be solid" ever since he was sent down. I was sort of an Urbom fan before he was sent down, so I was excited to see him called up for the last game. And my friend and I sat in the perfect spot to witness his goal; I went f***ing nuts.
