The Devils have been a little sloppy the last few minutes with all the penalties and now the icing.

I attended Wednesday's game, and that's largely how I feel about the loss. The Devils won that game everywhere but on the scoreboard. (I would say however the Devils dominated play for most of the last two periods, not just the last 10 minutes.) It was just a continuation of how the Devils have played so far this year. It just happened to be a game where they were a little unlucky and they lost, which happens in hockey sometimes due to the nature of the game.
One other thought, speaking as more of a casual fan who doesn't watch (or attend) many Devils games because I live out of market - Wednesday's game against Toronto was a very entertaining game, even if it was also frustrating. Games like that will increase casual fans' interest in the Devils. More broadly, if every hockey game was like that one, the NHL wouldn't have any popularity issues.

The more I look at these reverse retros, the more I think some yellow/gold accent lines in the logo crest (in the main circle, the outline around the entire logo/crest, or around the "NJ") were needed. They are fine otherwise in the context CR1976 (and I) mentioned in this thread (Rockies/Scouts colors, 1982-92 Devils striping).

One can hope that one day that will happen.
The 1982-1992 jerseys (both home and road versions) and green reverse retro can be rolled out occasionally, maybe 4-6 times per year combined between the three jerseys, but the 1992-2017 jerseys need to go back to being the primary jerseys.
Even though I like (though don't love) the new reverse retros, they should be a one year thing. The Devils are (as I sometimes call them) the red and black attack, and that is what they should wear in perpetuity (with occasional nods to their red & green days).

You just barely beat me to it - I was going to respond to one of your posts a few pages back and note the new reverse retro is actually a combination of the Rockies' (and Scouts') colors and the Devils' 1982-92 jerseys' striping.
In that context, I like these reverse retros - they acknowledge the Colorado Rockies' transition into the Devils by incorporating elements of both jerseys from immediately before and after the move. They don't hold a candle to the green reverse retros that were used a couple years ago, which the Devils should still use occasionally IMO (especially around Christmas), but to my eyes they are much better than the IMO boring and mostly ugly "Jersey" jerseys from last year.
In all seriousness, how many good reverse retro designs do the Devils feasibly have, especially those that honor only their history in north Jersey? I mean, the Devils have really only used two jersey designs in 40 years (with a 3rd design being a minor modification of one of those two) that themselves aren't dramatically different except for one color, and while based in north Jersey they've only used one (really good) logo. I personally don't want to see a variation of the Scouts' logo, which wasn't that great, on the reverse retro, and obviously the Rockies logo is out because it ties to the Colorado state flag, is used by the Avalanche, and has a "C" in it, a letter nowhere to be found in the name "New Jersey Devils". The only other obvious reverse retro candidate for the Devils is one that inverts the red and black color scheme on the 1992-2017 jerseys, or possibly inverts the red/black color scheme while using the 1982-92 striping. We'll probably see that reverse retro in 2023-24.

The reasons why COVID-19 is considered more serious than the flu (which itself can be dangerous) are 1) COVID-19 is a new virus strain that is relatively unknown and 2) it has had an unusually high severity/death rate for those infected compared to the flu. Now the fatality rate at face value is low, from what I've seen 3%, but a 3% fatality rate for anything is an extremely high fatality rate. Auto racing, which considered probably the most dangerous sport that has wide participation, has much lower than a 3% fatality rate.
Getting back to the NHL (and for that matter the AHL and ECHL), I think it is likely we will see an announcement about games played at empty arenas or suspending the season in the next 1-2 days.

100%, could not agree more. If Mac Black is the day one starter and the Hall trade happened in the offseason (as it unquestionably should have) this team is in the playoffs
Agree on Blackwood, don’t agree on Hall. With the moves the Devils made last offseason, there was no way they were trading Taylor Hall in summer 2019, at least after they made those other moves.
On a somewhat related note, Arizona would not be in the playoffs if they started after today.

True, good point. In Kansas City the Scouts' ownership was split too many different ways and didn't have deep enough pockets. In Denver, there were three different owners in six years. In both Kansas City and Denver, there were frequent general manager and coaching changes, and also many trades. (Of course, the Devils still made many coaching changes even after moving to north Jersey and even after they became a serious Stanley Cup contender, so maybe that wasn't a problem, LOL.) Though we make light of it now, these are the reasons why Wayne Gretzky called the Devils a Mickey Mouse organization in late 1983.
Even though John McMullen did bring ownership stability when he bought the team and moved it the Meadowlands, it still took a few more years until the Devils finally got true organizational stability after Lou Lamoriello came in as team president and general manager.

For whatever it is worth, you can look at the Devils’ own franchise history to see it often takes time for a youth movement to pay dividends. Including the Devils’ Scouts/Rockies history, for about the first 10 years of the team’s existence, up through about the 1983-84 season, the Devils/Rockies/Scouts didn’t have a clear direction, often went for quick fixes to their problems, and did not really try to implement a youth movement. The team wasn’t very successful either, never finishing with more than 59 points in an 80 game, pre-loser point season.
Starting in about the 1984-85 season, the Devils did consciously try to build more through youth. The Devils eventually did get better, but they still had non-playoff, not close to .500 seasons for 3 more years and 4 of the next 5 seasons through the 1988-89 season (and barely made the playoffs and finished above .500 in 1987-88). It wasn’t until 1989-90 the Devils started becoming a regular playoff team and until 1993-94 that they became a serious Stanley Cup contender.
The whole process from starting the youth movement to becoming a regular playoff team took 5+ years, and that was during a time when there were a lot more younger players in the NHL, the league generally had less competitive balance, and almost all teams made the playoffs (4 of 6 teams in the Devils’ division and 16 of 21 teams in the NHL as a whole). The process in going from a mediocre team with older players to a younger, ascending team takes time; it doesn’t happen in a couple years.
Having said the above, IMO the Devils haven’t done a good enough job selecting and developing young players. The higher talent young guys the Devils have now have to collectively step up their games IMO.

Even though Schneider faced a relatively high number of shots, I thought the defense in front of him was reasonably good, or at least a lot better than it was in front of Blackwood on Saturday against the Kings.

I tell you what - the more NHL arenas I go to, the more I think The Rock is one of the nicest arenas in the league. Among the arenas where I have seen games, the only one I thought was nicer than The Rock was T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. (I was in Las Vegas this past November for work and attended a Blackhawks/Golden Knights game.)

Severson is still pretty brutal defensively. I think he is what he is at this point.
Zacha has been impressing me.
Severson IMO has always been an offensive defenseman who is a net negative if he isn’t contributing offensively.

I liked the post because it's a cool view and pretty awesome that you went to all three games out there, but for the arena....how is that even legal? There's no way that's ADA-compliant.
They do have elevators here, though I don’t think there are many of them.
Incidentally, for the Devils I only went to the Kings game on Saturday and the Ducks game tonight. I did not attend the Devils/Sharks game on Thursday, and won’t be at the Devils/Golden Knights game on Tuesday either. (I also attended the 76ers/Clippers game earlier today and the Arizona State/Southern California college basketball game on Saturday evening on this weekend trip.)
Also for what it’s worth, I did not rent a car or use Uber/Lyft/taxis on this trip.

Yes, I think the Ducks have only had one arena in their history.
The Devils fans I talked to yesterday at the Kings game said the SAP Center in San Jose (or whatever it is called) was pretty spartan. I think it opened the same year as the Duck Pond/Honda Center.

The network schedule, or at least Game 3 being on ABC, is largely a function of that game falling on a weekend (and being expected to get a big TV audience), not a function of it being played at MSG.
TBS/TNT are as widely available as ESPN/ESPN2 are on cable systems. (TNT has televised NBA regular season and playoff games for many years, TBS has shown MLB regular season and playoff games in recent years, and both TBS and TNT have broadcast NCAA Tournament games for about the last 10 years.) General streaming packages should also include the channels.
