  1. Was really impressed with Zetterlund during Sweden's games, kid seems like an athletic freak and the way he play reminds me a ton of Patric Hornqvist, we might not have as many kids in the WJC this year but I think the ones we do are going to be real good ones.

We honestly have the potential of having three captains at the World Juniors this year in Talvitie, Zetterlund, and Smith. The latter two wore C's for their teams at the Showcase last week, Smith has worn the C for Canada at the U18's.

No, $7 million for Trouba is overpayment. He’s probably worth 5-5.5.

I'd have to disagree with that, Trouba I'd say is at least a very solid #2 on most teams. I'd say my ideal number for him would be $6.5M but I wouldn't blink an eye if the number was $7M

  3. I really liked that pick in the 5th Round this year, Sharangovich was pretty good as Belarus' 1st line center at the World Juniors so I'm happy we'll get to see him in Bing this year, see more of what he can bring on North American ice.

    I'll take a 26 year old Taylor Hall to a 30/31 year old Crosby/Malkin.

I can agree with that sentiment, really though I view McDavid-Crosby-Malkin as the best 3 centers in the NHL, so the only way I'd trade Hall is for a top 3 center is basically all I'm saying. Sid is about 5 years older, but I will say he is an entirely different animal, he can take even the biggest scrubs and turn them into 50-60 point producers on his line. See: Armstrong, Colby; Sheary, Conor; Kunitz, Chris

  5. Others have already hit on this note, but no. Hallsy is younger, healthier, and is coming off his 1st career Hart trophy, certainly wouldn't trade him for Karlsson. The list of players I'd trade Hall for is very short, it's something like: McDavid, Crosby, Malkin, and that's kind of it. Then there's players where I think it would be a fair swap, like Matthews or Kucherov, but I wouldn't be trading Hall for a fair swap, we already have arguably the best LW in the National Hockey League.

    Thought this was funny:

Can't find the original tweet, but I remember someone saying something along the lines of, "I can't wait for Karlsson to tweet a picture of himself sleeping in Golden Knights sheets from when he was a kid."

Re the new tax, it’s basically taxing all income above $5 million at 10 % where it was a few percent lower.  So for someone like Hall it means probably $400k less than what he would have made before the increase.

Prior to this year you could deduct most of your state income tax and property tax from your income for federal taxes.  Now it’s only $10k, which means guys who play for the Devils are probably paying more in taxes than they used to.

Re Maroon, supposedly Ray was interested in signing him, but couldn’t top what St Louis gave him?  Gotta think something big is coming, just have no idea what it is.

Well in respect to Maroon wanting to play for his hometown Blues and wanting to be able to spend more time with his son, then Ray really couldn't match what going to St. Louis offered him.

I do feel like Ray will make some sort of trade before the summer is out though, even if it is something smaller along the lines of Brock Nelson.

I thought his agent's tweet was telling - it was all about his kid:

Gotta respect that, I remember an interview when he was on the Oilers when he got emotional over the fact his son got to see him score a goal live. Seems like a really good and genuine guy, wish him luck with the Blues.

  9. Also, I know I've posted this before, but this segment from an episode of Steve Dangle is probably my favorite thing on any hockey podcast ever, and is about the BS Twitter rumor accounts

I understand there was debate on the validity of the twitter pare NHL Confidant.

But........he just tweeted Maroon to St. Louis for 1 year and Shero pretty much killed the Karlsson trade.

And I Quote: " Just to keep my loyal followers in the loop, I have confirmation the deal is dead. Cold feet from Shero sent this into a tail spin. NJD still believe in Zacha, but are completely willing to move Speers. Can conform Zajac submitted 5 team ok trade list"

Jeremy Rutherford tweeted about Maroon on a 1-year deal 6 hours ago, "NHL Confidant" is some of the biggest shlock out there in the hockey Twitter universe, he's one of those guys who's 25% aggregator and 75% just making sh!t up, any anonymous "rumor" account is immediately on a credibility blacklist.

    "hard cap"

This is literally the first offseason people are complaining about this, compared to other sports the NHL has the best system. Lower taxes are just those team's lure, just like the Original 6 has that lure, LA has the big market lure, different teams have different appeals and that's just one that the non-traditional markets have. Different guys want different things in free agency, not every guy is chasing pure money so the attraction of less taxes has less weight on certain multi-millionaires.

  12. I'm actually baffled by how bad this Islanders team is going to be, just my goodness. Fine, they lost Tavares, but instead of handing the keys to some youngsters like Bellows and Ho-Sang, they're instead tossing out 1-way contracts to 4th liners like they're Halloween candy so they can effectively logjam all their prospects for next season. Like look at this sh!t

    Beauvillier - Barzal - Eberle
Lee - Nelson (RFA) - Bailey
    Ladd - Filppula - Komarov
    Martin - Cizikas - Clutterbuck
    Johnston, Kuhnhackl, Kovar

    Leddy - Boychuk
    Hickey - Pulock
    Pelech - Aho/Toews
    Mayfield

    Lehner
    Greiss

I count 14 forwards with either secured NHL spots (Barzal, Beau) or 1-way NHL contracts before signing Nelson. Maybe we can grab Nelson from the Islanders on the cheap? There was some rumors last season we inquired on him near the deadline so Shero and company might already have some interest.

Again, Tampa cannot get Karlsson this year without moving out someone like Callahan, at a minimum.  From all accounts, no one is interested in any of the former triplets as the sweetener for the cap dump, because if they were, the deal would be done.

Well yeah I agree with that for sure, I'm sure the hold up is Tampa wants to hang on to guys like the triplets to give themselves the best shot this season and other teams are balking at that and wanting something beyond an average pick to take on Callahan.

  14. 9 minutes ago, Daniel said:

They also want Karlsson and presumably want him with an extension.  Very difficult for them to do that and keep Kucharov.

If Toronto claims they can fit Tavares, Matthews, Nylander, and Marner, Tampa can find a way to squeeze in a big 4 of Stamkos, Kucherov, Hedman, and Karlsson. It's the guys on the periphery of that that are going to have to go to fit it. I don't think it's this year, but maybe Brayden Point is a casualty next summer to manage the squeeze, or more likely someone like JT Miller.

Am I the only guy who doesn't really want Tyler Johnson? Career borderline 2nd-line center and one high-profile fantastic playoffs... he's fine, but nothing I would get excited about (like Point or Sergachev)

I think that's kind of what we should expecting though, yeah I'd obviously rather have Point or Sergachev but I'd bet my next paycheck that doesn't happen. Johnson I think is a realistic player we could nab and I think he would be perfect playing in our system, Johnson has speed for days and I think he would be a solid #2 center for us.

For the record, I am totally in favor of making Ken Daneyko comment on games where guys named Johnson and Johansson are on the same line. If we can also pick up Ross Johnston from the Isles, that would be even better.

We'd never have any idea who was doing what.

I thought the same thing, especially wouldn't be able to wait for Dano to just combine the two into "Marcus Johnson" or "Tyler Johansson" like a DBZ fusion.

I would not trade Severson, McLeod and a 1st round pick for Brayden Point.

Where are you seeing this report?

I've been a little weary on Pagnotta in the past but he's been pretty good thus far this summer, think Pagnotta was actually the first to have the Tavares signing.

I personally don't think Tyler Johnson is worth taking on Bobby Ryan.   That contract is way too long.   Unless we are getting Sergachev, even if it means we're sending another pieces out to balance things out, I want no part of Bobby Ryan.

Re: Zacha - He's been underwhelming so far but we saw very clear development as the season went along last year.  I'll be worried when he stops showing clear and obvious progress.

Yeah I can definitely get the hesitation on Ryan, but there's likely going to be compliance buyouts in a couple years when the CBA is renegotiated and if things really go sideways on Ryan, we can exercise one of those on him. Plus, I think Ryan can still play on a 3rd line and this would give a pretty solid forward group:

    Hall - Nico - Palmieri
    Wood - Johnson - Johansson
    Bratt - Zacha - Ryan
    Coleman - Zajac - Noesen
    Boyle

Swap around as you see fit, but I'd say that's easily a playoff caliber forward lineup, hands down.

But anyway, let's fvck around a bit before the deal is announced.  Fill in the blanks:

    Ottawa gets: __________
    Tampa gets: Karlsson, _________
    NJ gets: Kucherov, Ryan, Callahan

Edit: This is clearly fantasy land here, I'm aware of this.

I actually think a 4-way trade could be possible so that Tampa can clear enough to make a Karlsson extension doable. Say both the Devils and NYR are involved, maybe:

To Ottawa: TB 2020 1st, Cal Foote, Taylor Raddysh, Jake Dotchin
To Tampa Bay: Erik Karlsson, John Quenneville
To New Jersey: Bobby Ryan, Tyler Johnson
To NY Rangers: Ryan Callahan, TB 2019 3rd, 2019 4th

Ottawa gets a 1st and two blue chip prospects plus a young roster defenseman, Tampa gets Karlsson with an extension and a project prospect, Devils take on Ryan to facilitate the deal and get Tyler Johnson as part of it to be our #2 center, and the Rangers get a couple picks for taking on Callahan's cap hit.

I've heard repeatedly that the Rangers are not in on Erik Karlsson (most recently, Elliotte Friedman, David Pagnotta), so if anything maybe they're involved in a 3-way trade where they take a pick/prospect in exchange for taking on Bobby Ryan.
