You'd be amazed at how broke athletes wind up, same with people coming into big money... we aint talking a few million..and just because you make lots of money doesnt mean you should have most of it taken away.. 56%, screw that

Even if JT loses 56% of his money, he's still walking away with $5M a year for 7 years, I think he'll be fine for basically ever.

There was actually an ESPN 30-for-30 doc on ex-NFL players that go broke after their careers, and I was expecting to feel sorry for a lot of these guys but I felt no remorse for the people they interviewed for this. There was one guy who couldn't pay his child support bills because he spent that money on a new Hummer 3 instead, a lot of the stories in that doc amounted to just pure stupidity.

  2. I would imagine if it's Tampa the package is something like 2020 1st, Cal Foote, Brayden Coburn, and Taylor Raddysh, or something to that effect. I wouldn't be too quick to throw Callahan in that trade, Callahan has a no-move and I can't imagine he would sign off on a trade to Ottawa.

EDIT: Also something to consider, Tampa doesn't have their 2019 1st or 2nd available to barter with in this since those two are tied up in the conditions of the McDonagh trade with the Rangers.

His numbers from last year would have had him tied for 5th on our team for assists and 6th on the team in points, and he only played in 62 games.

His 11G/22A/33P was better than Noesen, Zajac, Gibbons, Coleman, Zacha (duh), Boyle, and Stafford (more duh) in relatively the same number or fewer games.

That's a little perspective on how much he sucked. Of course, if you take Zajac out of that list, I think Ryan probably out-earned the entire group collectively. At least its probably close lol.

That really doesn't sound bad to me, that's a 44 point pace over 82 games on a tire fire Ottawa team. Obviously not worth the $7.25M price tag but we have a lot of space to play with for a couple years, if you can add a 40 point player to your 3rd line that's a pretty decent addition.

  4. Just some numbers as well on Ryan, I think taking on a guy that's still very solid on the 3rd line in order to bring down the cost of Karlsson is well worth it, his scoring probabilities still trend on the rate of a 1st/2nd line swing player

  5. I really don't think Bobby Ryan is as bad as everyone makes him out to be, it's a struggle to be paying him like a bonafide 1st liner but he's still an NHLer in the sense he could fill a role as a solid 3rd liner.  His underlying numbers aren't amazing but they're manageable as a bottom 6 forward, and considering how thin we are on RW we could possibly use him for a year or two.

I really don't think you do, but I'm fine with throwing in McLeod if I take out the 2nd round pick. Eating that monstrous Bobby Ryan contract is a huuuuuge part of this deal.

I think a lot of people are forgetting that between now and the time the Ryan contract is over, we're guaranteed at least one lockout. Nearly a 100% guarantee. With a lockout comes another round of compliance buyouts, very likely, where we'd be able to rid ourselves of the Ryan deal before Nico's big money would be due.

Honestly, I don't think compliance buyouts are mutually exclusive to lockouts, but it more so just comes with the changing of the CBA, so I would bank on those being available after the CBA is renegotiated regardless of a lockout or not.

Probably the worst #1 overall of all-time.

Probably a coin flip between Yakupov and Patrik Stefan, at least Yakupov didn't miss on an empty net 2 feet from the goal line

EDIT: Just reiterating this because of this video, but god I love those 2000's Oilers sweaters

  8. Gryba probably falls 8th on our defensive depth chart right now, he probably only plays if we're in real dire straits. Not a bad player to have in our back pocket because I'd rather Gryba play if we have a few injuries rather than Josh Jacobs, but I wouldn't worry much about this, pretty sure he's signed to a 2-way so he probably starts in Bing.

To be clear, I have zero problem with Ray not overpaying for anyone who was available yesterday that wasn't named John Tavares.  My point is that there better be something in the works to land more impact players, because that's what this team needs.  With the exception of Smith and maybe Joey Anderson, the prospects we have do not fit that bill, not to mention that Smith is probably at least four years away from actually being an impact player at the NHL level.  And given that we're a middle of the pack team, it's a pretty good bet that we're not going to get immediate help in the upcoming drafts.

ROR, a 27 year old "borderline first line center", by definition fits the bill of impact player.  He was pretty  much stolen by St. Louis (a top ten protected first round pick and a B prospect plus spare parts) because St. Louis ownership was willing to pony up the cash for his signing bonus.

Hopefully Ray has something cooking.  All I know is, we shouldn't be in trust the process mode anymore.

I don't really agree with the sentiment that St. Louis stole O'Reilly, that was a pretty fair bit to give up. Our equivalent offer would probably be something along the lines of a 1st, 2nd, Joey Anderson, Blake Coleman, and Stefan Noesen, which is something I'd consider but I don't think would be an outright steal.

So teams that were not contending for playoff spots last year got worse and the teams that we're actually competing with for playoffs spots are going to be better.  Thank the maker!

We're still ahead of the Rangers, Islanders, and Hurricanes and we're still better than at least half of the Atlantic division, so at worst we're probably fighting with Florida and Columbus for the final spot again at minimum. It's not like every team in our division made huge, sweeping upgrades and we're just sitting around eating glue.

  11. I don't really have any problems with the entire Tavares situation, out of the six options Toronto was probably the best Eastern Conference one for us, I'd much rather JT be lacing em up for the Leafs than with the Isles, Bruins, or Lightning, and from just an entire outlook of the situation I can't really fault JT for a lot of what happened. Certainly can't blame him for leaving the Island as they completely squandered the first 9 years of career and at the end of the day it's not like he went and chased money, he went to play for his childhood team and he gets a real chance at playing for a Cup with the Leafs. Maybe his goodbye to the Islanders wasn't the greatest, but I think the sentiment was fine, I think he wanted to communicate how much the Islanders meant to him and I don't think he's lying on that front, maybe just release it a few days later when the wound is a little less fresh.

Was this adjusted for the fact that Zacha was almost never part of the 1st PK unit?   That makes a large difference.

It was not, and that's a good point. Zacha was always known as a good defensive player in junior as well though so I think he could handle that responsibility. I'd like to see them give him time on the 2nd unit though and let him grow from there.

It sounds like that quote means Tavares has no loyalty to Lou and Trotz.

Nor should he to be honest, Lou didn't draft him, Trotz didn't help him develop as a player, that's why I was so confused when everyone was signing Tavares' contract for him when Lou hopped over to the Island.

IIRC, his possession numbers really took a nosedive when he came back from his injury. It seemed like he was never able to get back up to speed upon returning. A lot of Gibbons' value came from the PK. If Gibbons doesn't return, I think they'll run some combo of Zajac, Coleman, Zacha, Hischier, and Bratt on the PK. However, do you want a 21,20, and 19 year old on that unit?

I have no issue with Zacha, Hischier, and Bratt all playing PK time for us, if they're good enough for it then age doesn't mean anything to me in that regard. Zacha was actually one of our best penalty killers last season when he was given time in terms of expected goals against, I've been wanting Zacha to get more PK time for awhile now, and Nico and Bratt are obviously capable as well.

  15. I'm really hoping they let Gibbons go, or if they do keep him he's firmly as a 13th or 14th forward. He was one of our worst possession players last year, the only forward we had with definitively worse results was Jimmy Hayes, and Gibbons was about on par with Drew Stafford. I'd rather make a budget signing or two on some guys that can bring a little more than Gibbons does.

Montreal is a clown show, but we all knew that at this point. You can't trade away PK Subban for "character issues" and turn around and look to sign a guy who's being prosecuted for domestic abuse, the hypocrisy of that organization is disgusting.

Wonder if it has to do with one of them being an eccentric black man and the other one not, just wondering.

  17. I would be livid if we traded the 17th for Nino, his career high in goals is 25, last year he had 18, that’s not worth a pick in the middle of the 1st Round. If we’re talking a 2019 2nd and something small, then yeah I’d be interested.

This kid is a Left Wing, got drafted 38th overall (2nd round, Panthers) in 2016 & didn't end up signing with them - going back into this year's draft FWIW...

I love Adam Mascherin, I had him rated as a 1st Rounder in 2016. He's close to NHL-ready, just needs a little extra time in the AHL, if he's there at our pick in the 4th Round I would jump all over that but I doubt he will be.
