  1. I think the worst contract in hockey has to go to Brent Seabrook, woof. Ryan's is bad, but there are other that are a bit worse.

I do think Ryan can still contribute to a degree in your top 9, but a lot has been made of us having to be weary of the impending Hall and Nico contracts, so I would be cautious taking a contract like Ryan's.

With the rumblings of Hoffman being traded, it got me wondering:

Lets say Shero knows that there's 0 chance at JT or Carlson. Would you take on the Bobby Ryan contract and Mike Hoffman in exchange for 17 overall? Would that be enough to get the deal done?

I love Hoffman and think Ryan can still bring something as a 3rd liner, but if we're moving #17 I'd feel way more comfortable moving it for a high-end defenseman. I'd rather wait and see what happens with OEL and see if you can't swing a trade for him with #17 as one of the pieces.

  3. This handful of goals in the Final hasn't fooled me, when I watch him play I still see the same player we had last year, Smith-Pelly is a fringe 4th liner and anyone would be a fool to pay him more than that. I'll take my heavy dose of Noesen and Coleman in the bottom 6 over DSP, thank you very much.

I never liked how he just let Mogilny walk after the 2001 cup loss.   I seem to remember Mogilny wanting to re-sign and i don't think he asked for the moon either like Gomez did.  That was the beginning of the dismantling of the best top 6 we ever had ('00 and '01) followed shortly thereafter by the Arnott and Sykora trades which I also still hate.

In defense of the Arnott and Sykora trades, Langenbrunner and Friesen were big parts of that 2003 Cup winning team, Langenbrunner was unstoppable in the first two rounds and we likely don't get past Ottawa without Friesen. Would we have done it anyways with Arnott and Sykora? It's possible, but I think it's just worth pointing out.

Boqvist has fallen all the way down to 12 in Button's latest rankings,  if he's there after 10 you'd have to assume Shero would do what it took to move up. Would you offer next years' 2nd round pick in addition to #17 to jump up to the Islanders pick at #11 or #12 to grab Jesper's brother? Seems like he was a consensus top-5 pick not too long ago, wonder why he's fallen?

That's something I'd do in a heartbeat, he didn't have the greatest season but he has all of the tools to be a dominant offensive defenseman IMO. I have him ranked 5th personally, he plays kind of like a rover at times with his hands and skating ability which makes his offensive ceiling really attractive.

EDIT: Also, I consistently find Button to have the worst rankings every season. They're his honest opinion, but my favorite guy for draft coverage is Corey Pronman if you have an Athletic sub.

  6. I'm still not entirely certain Tavares is a lock to stay, canning Snow and Weight is obviously a good step but I'm not convinced JT has so much respect for Lou that he's not going to leave. Other stars have left Lou in the past, and this one has never worked with him and in turn has no sense of loyalty to him.

The Isles canning Weight is so deserved I'm surprised it wasn't speculated more on as the season drew to a close. The Isles' defensive core isn't anything to write home about but their performance, or lack thereof, I would pin more on coaching and scheme. A colossal failure on that level for the defense shouldn't happen to a group with Nick Leddy, Johnny Boychuk, and Calvin de Haan on it, who are all very solid players.

Why? You think a third rounder is too early to take a goalie? Or you didn't like that his stats were bad in his draft year?

Mostly my issue was with the fact he had never had great success at any level before being drafted, so selecting him in particular with that 4th round I was never sold on. There were other goalies with better track records available at that pick that I would have been way more comfortable with, namely Colton Point, Mikhail Berdin, and Veini Vehvilainen (who was never drafted). From the start the draft pick seemed like a very low chance of success and that was proven right.

He’ll be given every opportunity it seems.  The front office — Shero, Fitzgerald and Castro’s — all seem to love him.

I also imagine that the Rangers asked for him in the Grabner deal based on Shero’s comments.

I already felt a little uneasy giving up Rykov in the Grabner deal, I would have flipped my sh!t if they traded Joey to the Rangers. Thank god.

  9. I'm thinking Joey Anderson might be able to come into camp and win a spot on the RW next year, I think he's ready to play a role in the NHL and seems very much like a Hynes type of player, kid never stops working.

TSN listed their top 20 free agents this year, and 3 "best-fits" teams for each.

The Devils were listed as a top-3 suitor for: JT (1st), Carlson (2nd). JVR (3rd) and Maroon (12th).

Really starting to set myself up mentally to be suicidal if we don't land one of the big guns. Just like last year. And then Kevin Weekes tweeted that Shattenkirk was a Ranger, and I jumped off a bridge.

Do ya got the link to this? Just wanna look through and see who else is listed there

What a photo, that's perfect. I love the Vegas story, but for the record I'm rooting for the Caps to win it all, that's the kind of photo that if I ever met Holtby I'd love to have him sign.

EDIT: Also just as aside since he's in the photo and it made me think of it, the adult league I play in is in Baldwinsville, NY, which is Alex Tuch's hometown. If the Knights won the series I'd imagine the Cup makes an appearance about 25 minutes away from my house.

Is it possible that's just a coincidence in that the GM, and especially someone like Lou under the circumstances he went to Toronto, usually doesn't have that much say at the draft?  It's usually your head of scouting, although the GM might veto a certain pick like Shero is reported to have done with Brandon Saad?  Or, this year I can imagine a GM overriding his scouts when it comes to drafting or not drafting Ryan Merkely.

Also, here's a link to a Talking Red podcast where they interview Steve Kournianos about possibilities for the Devils at #17.  He's very high on Bode Wilde.

    http://talkingred.com/2018/05/266-offseason-talk/

Normally I would say yes, but there was a very clear shift in drafting philosophy between 2015 and 2016 in Toronto even though the scouting staff went largely unchanged, the only real change in management came in the form of Lou being named the GM in July of 2015. The drafting philosophy under Dubas and Hunter was skating ability and skill, and then in 2016 and 2017 under Lou the philosophy seemed to shift to size, which leads me to believe it was largely a Lou M.O.

Lou and Conte passed on Point three times. Just total incompetence. I can't wait to see what Lou does to the Islanders now that he has full control of their draft.

It also looks like the Leafs better draft picks in recent years were because of Mark Hunter and Kyle Dubas rather than because of Lou, in fact their drafting got significantly worse under Lou by the way I'd project their 2016 and 2017 drafts compared to the 2015 draft. Throw out the 1st round picks, and the 2015 draft run by Dubas and Hunter was a draft so by my heart I thought the Leafs stole my draft guide: Travis Dermott, Jeremy Bracco, Andrew Nielsen, Jesper Lindgren, Dima Timashov – all players with speed and skill that have likely NHL careers (maybe Lindgren the least so of that group, but I liked him a lot). Compare that to the drafting from 2016 and 2017 and it's all size over skill: Yegor Korshkov over Alex DeBrincat, the drafting of immobile 6'4"+ defenders in Rasanen, Gordeev, Middleton, and Mattinen, and just complete swings and misses on two-way CHL players. Lou is a trash new-age NHL talent evaluator at the draft, love the fact he'll be in charge for the Islanders this summer at the draft.

  14. If you have an Athletic sub, Corey Pronman put out a great article today on how Draft Boards work for NHL teams and scouts:

    https://theathletic.com/367378/2018/05/29/pronman-how-nhl-draft-boards-work/

Using the simulation he did to determine how his drafts could have gone (give yourself the 16th pick in every round, pick your best available off your list), I went back and looked over how the 2014 Draft would have gone using my rankings. Fvck off Lou and Conte.

Round - Player - My Rank:
1st Round: Kasperi Kapanen, RW (8)
    2nd Round: Roland McKeown, D (27)
    3rd Round: Brayden Point, C (29)
4th Round: Spencer Watson, RW (40)
5th Round: Ondrej Kase, LW (54)
    6th Round: Adam Ollas Mattsson, D (56)
7th Round: Vladimir Tkachev, LW (57)

The only player there that I would consider a complete miss would be Ollas Mattsson, just goes to show how tone deaf Lou and Conte were going into that draft, always infuriates me. I'll never forget how angry I was after the 2nd day of the draft that year.

lol fair enough.  Do you tell your old man how he should feel and think about Vegas as well?

No, I can disagree with him and we can have a healthy back and forth, but at least I know where he stands on Vegas and I just kind of accept it. What does bother me is when people that are so clearly anti-Vegas try to sit on the fence and pretend that they're not, I don't try to force people to feel a certain way but I appreciate when people are honest on their viewpoints.

Anyways I'm done with this, in the end this is a hockey forum on the internet and we're all Devils fans anyways, let's just stop bickering.

Only in the NBA?  lol so Tom Brady in the NFL is not an issue to you either?  ok then.

I responded to you taking shots at "cynics of Vegas".  It's pretty much the same as "lulz, suck it haterz!"  Stop trying to warp the narrative.  You were looking to stir the pot.

No, you responded to the notion that Vegas is good for growing the game of hockey, stop trying to warp the narrative. And when I'm referring to the cynics of Vegas, I said that with a lot of what I see on Twitter in mind and what my old man was saying last night while watching the game, and as far as I know my old man is not a poster here. It's not my fault you took my post as a shot at you.

We just went through 10 years where there were 4 different teams winning the cup.  We are closer to the NBA than what a lot of NHL fans like to admit.

The NHL is not anything like the NBA, in those 10 years the NHL had 14 different teams play in the Final while the NBA had just 9, and the past 8 finals have all had Lebron James in it, so stop with this narrative. Having top teams over a certain stretch happens in every sport, having literally the same teams and the same player over and over happens only in the NBA.

Also, for a guy that's apparently so pro-Vegas, you seem to get awfully fired up every time someone says something positive about Vegas.

Oh stop it. I never said I hate Vegas.  I was and still am a big supporter of them having a team in Vegas when others on this board insisted that it would never work.

Like I said they are getting eyeballs, but eyeballs do not equate respect for the league in general by outsiders.

If this isn't winning the league "respect," then I think there's a criminal misunderstanding of what makes sports great and fun in North America. There were two huge sporting events last night: Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Final and Game 7 of the Western Conference Final in the NBA. One saw an expansion team win the first game in the Final over a team playing in just their 2nd final in 40+ years of history – an unpredictable story that's producing great hockey. The other saw the production of the 4th consecutive Final with Golden State vs Cleveland in it and the 8th consecutive Final with Lebron James in it. What makes sports so much fun to me is the competitiveness and the unpredictable nature of it and the NHL is demonstrating it has the highest level of that in professional sports right now, bar none, while the NBA is slogging along with the most predictable and stale story in professional sports.

It's like a sideshow attraction.  Yeah you are getting eyeballs, but you ain't getting respect.

I understand you hate Vegas, but it's impossible to spin in it that Vegas isn't growing the game. The team has won over the hearts of the locals in Vegas and they're helping the NHL set record highs in ratings. This is fantastic for growing the NHL in the United States, and the numbers support it.

  20. Quite like Kurashev myself, I could see him falling to the 3rd round but I like him as an early/mid 2nd myself, good playmaker with two-way ability and has the potential to be an excellent powerplay player with that shot.
