This is fun to play with.

At this point I kind of just hope we can at least stay 6th so we have a shot at Rossi. I don't think we'll get him if we're pushed to 7th or 8th.

I saw Rossi’s coach in Ottawa compared him to a mixture of Nico and St. Louis. I would love to get this kid. Might be the player I want the 2nd most after AL.

Absolutely, bat-sh!t insane to me that the teams that are going to play in the qualifying round get a chance at the 1OA pick.  Do the math - there's a 24.5% chance that a team that loses their play-in series gets the only franchise player in the draft.

Why?  Why must the NHL always make things difficult?  Do a separate lottery for the 7 teams to determine who gets the 1st/2nd/3rd overall pick, then a separate lottery for the other teams to determine their order.

Listen, I get it that we can't complain about the lottery being cruel to us over the past few years since we've been extraordinarily lucky.  But this just seems stupid.

We have no idea what the future holds for these kids. Pettersson was the best pick in his draft, and he went 5th. We already have people on this very board claiming Dach will be better than Jack Hughes. Lafrenière is obviously the big prize, but the top 6-8 guys are all pretty damn good prospects this year.

  3. Depends if we have football or not. If the NFL starts on time it’ll hold me over until hockey comes back.

My excitement level will also be directly correlated to who our coach is. Gallant or Lav, and I’m itching to get going. Nas or John Stevens...not so much. I kind of doubt the Swedish dude is a front runner, but just the unknown with him would be kind of intriguing.

Ah winning gold WJC-20 means he is guaranteed to be an NHL player.  Good grief lol.

So he scored a goal.....played in 4 games for a dumpster fire of a team......and you are saying he is promising?  lol K.

Indeed, he was pegged to go as a second rounder by most experts.  The same round where players have about a 15% chance of making the NHL.  The whole thought that he could be a top 4 D-man only exists in the Devils fan bubble (and almost all in the bubble have never even heard of him before the trade).  Most expert picks I have seen since the trade said he is maybe at best a 3rd pairing D-man.

Apologies if I keep my "mission accomplished" banner furled up on Merkley based on 10-15 games.

That must mean he sucks right? Never mind he the fact that played big minutes for team Canada at the WJC -20 and won gold.

I think you’re confusing Merkley with someone else. He’s only played in 5 NHL games (4 for NJ), but he looked pretty good. Scored a goal against Columbus.

We added a top 10 pick that is still a gamble with a scouting staff that has yet to prove themselves, a player who a lot of Devils fans are hoping would be a top 4 D-man (while most experts are pegging him lower) but is maybe the 5th best prospect in the Coyotes system, and a bunch of spare parts.

There have been teams that get more for rentals at the deadline than what we get for Hall.

A top 10 pick is a top 10 pick. Worrying about what they do with it doesn’t diminish its value.

Idk where you’re getting these expert projections on Bahl, but this is where all the big guys had him ranked going into his draft class:

2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #68 by ISS Hockey

2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #34 by Future Considerations

2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #42 by Hockeyprospect.com

2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #58 by McKeen's Hockey

2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #47 by TSN/McKenzie

2018 NHL Entry Draft: Ranked #29 by NHL Central Scouting

So NHL Central Scouting even had a 1st round grade on him, and 3 others had him in the top 50. Seems like a higher ceiling than 3rd pairing to me. And “spare part” Nick Merkley is a former 1st round pick who looked very promising in the handful of games we saw him in, and is only 22.

Pierre would have gotten more for Hall.

Can’t tell if serious or not...

but I’ll bite. We’re about to end up with a top 10 pick in one of the better drafts in recent years, a possible future top 4 defenseman who’s going to bring some much needed size and grit to our blue line, and Nick Merkley who looks like he could be a decent middle 6 forward. All for 35 games of Taylor Hall.

  8. Biz being such a meat head works for the dynamic of the show though. At least, imo. Hell, half the time he’s stoned to boot lol. Whit breaking his balls for the dumb sh!t he says is usually pretty funny. Just recently he called the best player in the world “Conor David” ffs....LOL

So, what the hell I figured I'd bump this thread with the following question.  Hope it hasn't already been beaten to death elsewhere.

Who would you like to see as captain on opening night of the 2020-2021 season?

For me, it's Nico or bust.  I get a case for Zajac or Palmieri perhaps.  I can't really imagine it going to anyone else.

Nico. He’s young, one of our best players, is signed to a long term contract, and will make a great face of the franchise (hopefully along with Jack in a few years). It’s a no-brainer. He really stepped up after Hall was traded, too.

  10. You guys are missing out. Spittin Chiclets is fantastic. You should at least listen to some of the Devils related ones (Gomez, Rupp, etc). Then there’s occasionally crazy sh!t like Josh Hennessy telling the story about playing for Russian gangsters in the KHL, or Brian Burke talking about one his scouts almost fighting Nail Yakupov during his interview. Lol

I personally love it, and I’m not even really into podcasts that much. It’s pretty much the only one I regularly listen to.

i was not a huge fan of how things ended for many many characters in GOT and i felt there was a lot of missed opportunities but it didn't make me hate it. I'm always trying to differentiate not getting exactly what i expected or wanted and what is actually a flaw. These days there's quite a bit of people who cannot make the difference when they are watching something.

If anything the pacing was either too stretched or too rushed once the big battle happened. That episode was actually amazing IMO.

I guess once you've seen the finale for Dexter... it sets the bar pretty damn low for everything else

I know ratings aren’t everything, but the GoT series finale actually has a lower rating on IMDb (4.1) than Dexter’s (4.6). Ouch lol

I can't even re-watch GOT because of how badly D&D fvcked up that final season.  I'll be watching and I'm like "oh hey look, another storyline that was abandoned and never resolved! Quaithe? Daario Naharis? Jaqen H'ghar? Meera Reed? The Warlocks of Quarth? Who's that? Maggie the french prophecy? Who cares?! Wow, the White Walkers made these cool spiral symbols over and over, I wonder if we'll find out what they mean? NOPE. 7 seasons of Jon Snow being hinted at as Azor Ahai only for his true bloodline and claim to be absolutely pointless by the end of the series. Arya and Gendry awkwardly hooking up for absolutely NO reason and never to be talked about again, not to mention Gendry never asserting his pretty strong claim to the throne. The whole Cersei being pregnant storyline only for that not to matter either. Bran can warg into people but for some reason never used this power to prevent the destruction of Kings Landing, which apparently he LET happen, since he knows and sees all. The Dothraki being completely wiped out in the battle of Winterfell, only to show up in the battle for Kings Landing? fvck logic! D&D fvcking suck at writing. So many shoehorned plot points and abandoned storylines in the last 2 seasons. They should've just listened to George RR Martin and did a few more seasons instead of trying to rush it so they could go off and do their Star Wars project, which they wound up being fired from anyway after the final season bombed so badly LOL

This one really bothered me. Jon’s story was connected to the WW the entire time, and the show even gave us an epic stare down between him and the NK, and yet Jon was essentially useless at the end of the day. Arya just swoops in with her ninja skills and kills him. I honestly thought it was even more anticlimactic than Snoke in TLJ.

Dany’s heel-turn was also way too abrupt (part of the problem with the rushed shortened season). Yes, she was ruthless to her enemies from the beginning, but never to innocent women and children. She literally spent the majority of the story saving the oppressed. And the fact her BFF being killed drove her to such madness was not very consistent. This is a girl who lost her brother, baby, husband, Barristan, Jorah, one of her dragons, and yet still held it together, but she completely loses it over Missandei? That wasn’t handled well, and didn’t work for me

Also, I HATE King Bran. If GRRM ever bothers to finish the books (lol yeah right) I’m going to hate it when he writes it, too. Hell, he’s like 10 in the books.

That's an interesting note since, by the numbers (look away, CR!), Hughes had the largest negative variance in goals to expected goals in 5v5 play which could be due to bad luck and/or poor finishing/shooting skill.

Probably a bit of both. I know he hit about 4-5 posts over the course of season, but his shot could definitely stand to improve. Although, his wrist shot is actually better than I expected it would be. His 1st career goal (against Vancouver) was a pretty nice shot.

The Sopranos and Breaking Bad are my two favorite dramatic TV shows of all-time.... The Sopranos ending infuriated me, while Breaking Bad literally was the perfect ending. Quick story- I had the opportunity to meet and talk to David Chase a few years ago (signed my Sopranos book too, which was awesome). I asked him if Tony was dead.... he asked me what I thought. I said ‘I think he’s alive’. He replied, ‘then he’s alive’. He explained that he left it up to the audience to interpret, which I told him I wasn’t nuts about as a fan who had invested 8 years in the show, but I understood. I asked him if he would ever consider a Sopranos movie and he said he ‘wouldn’t rule it out’.... sadly, James Gandolfini passed away two months later. 😢 But he wasn’t kidding, because we’re getting The Many Saints of Newark, which is a Sopranos prequel movie.

For me it’s The Sopranos and The Wire. Pretty much 1 & 1A. I do love Breaking Bad as well though (definitely top 5 along with Deadwood and The Shield).

As far as the ending of the Sopranos, I didn’t like it at first when I originally leaned towards it being ambiguous, but over the years I am much more in the camp that believes Tony was killed. There was just so met setup and foreshadowing for it. Between his talk with Bobby about “never hearing it coming” to the final season opening with all the crazy Egyptian stuff about death, etc. As David Chase has said “its all there.”

jack and nico better be eating a lot.

I was reading an article on The Athletic about Jack, and apparently him and his brothers are all working out together with a bunch of equipment they got from the USNDT. I guess they live really close to the main training facility in Michigan. Jack mentioned the big thing he wants to improve is his shot, and becoming more of a scoring threat. Which I liked hearing. The kid can damn sure make great passes, if he can strengthen his shot a bit it will help a lot.

I’ve watched the entire series like 10 times. It was dark, no doubt about it. It could've been lighter. It was fine, it could’ve been great.

People on the internet acted like someone ate their baby. I think some people live just to trash things on the internet.

Trust me that was not the case with me. I defended the show to book purists and haters for YEARS. But I really did hate the final season.

To add to the whole other convo I never watched game of thrones until it was all over and I binged watched the entire series but I actually enjoyed the ending. Maybe binge watching it had something to do with it though.

I liked the Sopranos ending and the two shows that had absolutely perfect endings that will be hard to be topped for me are Breaking Bad and Six Feet Under. Dexter was by far the worst ending but that series really should have ended after season 4 to begin with.

Sitcoms are so hard to have a perfect goodbye since they really aren't setup the same way. I thought Modern Family wrapped up nicely though.

Six Feet Under is my 2nd favorite series finale of all time after The Shield. Those final minutes absolutely wrecked me.

Did not watch the Shield.  And forgot about the Sopranos, which was also unfairly maligned.  Breaking Bad was perfect, to the point that I watch the last episode every so often.

I highly recommend The Shield. Especially since you like crime shows. Along with The Sopranos, it really was one of the OG dramas that paved the way for future shows to have that kind of antihero character as a lead.
