CBC'S Hockey Day in Canada unveils key details surrounding sixth annual broadcast celebration

13.5 hour-long live telecast on Jan.7, 2006 to explore how hockey shapes the Canadian family

Prepare to celebrate, Canada! CBC'S HOCKEY DAY IN CANADA sixth annual broadcast drops the puck on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 12 noon ET, as host Ron MacLean tells the story of the sport that unites us all, live from Stephenville, Nfld.

The 2006 edition of CBC'S HOCKEY DAY IN CANADA will celebrate our game at the grassroots level, highlighting how hockey defines both the parent-child and adult-child relationship, and featuring remote video feeds from Florenceville, N.B.; Parry Sound, Ont.; Winkler, Man.; Calgary, Alta.; and Burnaby, B.C. Headlining CBC'S HOCKEY DAY IN CANADA lineup on Jan. 7 is the traditional NHL all-Canadian tripleheader starting with Ottawa at Montreal at 2 p.m. ET, followed by Toronto at Edmonton at 7 p.m. ET (available in High-Definition) and Calgary at Vancouver at 10 p.m. ET. (Please see full broadcast schedule below).

"There's nothing that brings Canadian families closer together than the game of hockey," said Joel Darling, executive producer of CBC'S HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA. "On Jan. 7, 2006, it will not matter whether you're in Stephenville, Newfoundland or Burnaby, British Columbia, or whether you're an adult or child, father or son, mother or daughter -- CBC'S HOCKEY DAY IN CANADA will unite Canadians from coast to coast to coast in a true grassroots celebration of our country's wonderful game."

During the 13.5 hour-long broadcast, CBC'S HOCKEY DAY IN CANADA will visit the following locations across the country, exploring the importance of our game to these communities:

Stephenville, Nfld. - MacLean will be joined by Don Cherry and Dick Irvin at the Stephenville Dome to tell the story of hockey's long and important history in Newfoundland. Former NHL star Wendel Clark will also be on-hand in Stephenville.

Florenceville, N.B. - CBC's Michael Holmes will report from the Northern Carleton Civic Centre, home to a 12-team Pee Wee tournament presented by the Carleton Minor Hockey Association.

Parry Sound, Ont. - CBC's Scott Russell will host from the hometown of Bobby Orr, providing updates from a three-on-three outdoor hockey tournament. Special guest Doug Orr, Bobby Orr's father, will join Russell in Parry Sound for a feature interview.

Winkler, Man. - CBC's Mike Beauregard will go rinkside at the Winkler Recreation Centre for coverage of a 16-team peewee hockey tournament and street hockey tournament.

Calgary, Alta. - CBC's Doug Dirks will be on-location at an outdoor shinny event involving several young players, as part of the South Calgary Community Association's grassroots hockey program.

Burnaby, B.C. - Scott Oake and Kelly Hrudey will be on-site at Bill Copeland Arena looking in on the Vancouver Canucks game day skate and a B.C. Coaches Clinic. Later in the evening, updates from a Junior A British Columbia Hockey League match-up between the Surrey Eagles and Burnaby Express will be featured.

In addition to visiting several locations throughout Canada, CBC'S HOCKEY DAY IN CANADA telecast will also present the following hockey family-inspired stories:

"Detroit Dads" - During a special version of The Headliner, host Elliotte Friedman will give viewers an inside look at a Detroit Red Wings road trip where the players brought their fathers along for the ride. The Headliner airs during Saturday Night (the pre-game show) beginning at 6:30 p.m. ET.

"Bob Cole: St. John's" - CBC'S HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA legendary play-by-play announcer Bob Cole takes viewers on a personal trip of his hometown, St. John's, Nfld.

"The Drive Home" - CBC's Jim Hughson explores the "ride home", reflecting on those challenging moments a parent experiences with their child in the car before or after a big game.

"My Three Girls" - A Stephenville man finally gets to live his dream to be a hockey Dad when his three daughters take up the game of hockey. The catch: they didn't start playing until they were in their thirties

"Beating the Odds" - An inspirational story depicting how the game of hockey is helping a family from Kanata, Ont. raise two boys with Cystic Fibrosis.

"Super Squirt" - A report from Roblin, Man. regarding a nine-year-old scoring phenom who is averaging 200 to 300 goals per season and how his talent impacts his family

CBC'S HOCKEY DAY IN CANADA celebration will also feature a live online chat with Don Cherry and Kelly Hrudey on Jan. 7 as well as an exclusive online auction at cbc.ca/hockeyday. Featuring one-of-a-kind autographed hockey memorabilia graciously donated by the National Hockey League (NHL), Canadian NHL teams and the NHL Players' Association, the online auction launches on Dec. 23 at 6 p.m. ET and runs until 12 midnight ET on Jan. 8. Proceeds will go to minor hockey in Newfoundland and Labrador.

CBC'S HOCKEY DAY IN CANADA sixth annual broadcast on Jan. 7, 2006 marks the continuation of an important Canadian hockey tradition. In 2004, CBC'S HOCKEY DAY IN CANADA received two Gemini awards for Best Sports Program and Best Host in a Sports Program (Ron MacLean). Where is it said that this will be on Center Ice ALL DAY?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I'd imagine it would be similar to when Hockey Night in Canada has its doubleheaders. Center Ice keeps the CBC feed on the same channel uninterrupted through both games.

Hopefully they'll do the same for this.

They've aired all of it every year I've had Center Ice. In fact, this past weekend was the first time they noted and aired the preceding half hour of Hockey Night In Canada at 6:30, and it was awesome. They've also aired the outdoor Heritage Game and some WJC games, too.
