He should probably read the Star Ledger before writing his column.

March 10, 2007 -- BUFFALO - The short-handed Devils hope ailing-handed Colin White can help them in their time of need tonight.

Though Lou Lamoriello said Brad Lukowich didn't suffer a concussion in Thursday's inspiring 4-3 shootout victory in Pittsburgh, the defenseman won't be available for tonight's showdown here with the Eastern Conference-leading Sabres.

So White said he hopes to play hurt.

"Yes. I'm going to try. I'll see how I feel," White said yesterday. "I gave it a rest [Thursday night and yesterday]."

White was a surprise scratch Thursday when the Devils were already one player undermanned. A hand injury that idled him three games last month hasn't fully healed, and he reinjured it last week, soldiering on until Thursday.

"It's the hand again. It hasn't been feeling great lately," White said.

The Devils' top defensive defenseman said he doesn't believe there are any broken bones in that hand, but that the pain doesn't come and go.

"It's just there. It's nagging," White said.

It seems unlikely Brian Gionta will return to the lineup tonight. He sat out eight games with a groin injury and aggravated it by returning too soon for two games. The Devils will get Cam Janssen back from his three-game suspension for his late hit on Toronto's Tomas Kaberle.

Claude Julien's team reached 90 points Thursday despite playing with 16 skaters instead of the permitted 18. If White can play, the return of Janssen will give them 17 tonight.

Lamoriello said Lukowich was cleared after staying overnight in a Pittsburgh hospital, then re-examined by a neurologist yesterday in New Jersey. Lukowich was flattened by Colby Armstrong's forearm as Lukowich tried to hip check the Penguin with 7.9 seconds left in regulation Thursday. No move to replace Lukowich on the roster was made yesterday, and Lamoriello called the player's availability "day-to-day."

The Devils play host to the Penguins on Wednesday, the night Pens owners reconvene with government and NHL officials in attempt to keep the team in Pittsburgh. Kansas City and Las Vegas are trying to lure the team. . . . The Devils beat the Sabres 3-2 at the Meadowlands on Feb. 3 and lost to them 3-2 in New Jersey on Dec. 12. . . . Martin Brodeur reached the 40-victory level for the record sixth time in his career; no one else has reached that level more than three times. . . . Defenseman Andy Greene scored his first NHL goal Thursday.
