Don
You could fix that by putting NBA franchises in Calgary and Edmonton.
PeteyNice
You cannot look at it by straight numbers since the NBA team has thousands of more seats per game that they can sell. Percentage of capacity is a much fairer metric. Using that you have: Better NHL: Philly New York Half of LA (Kings over Clippers) Toronto Detroit Denver Boston Atlanta Minnesota Better NBA: Half of LA (Lakers over Kings) Chicago New Jersey Miami Dallas Phoenix Washington
Fishu
basketball Football Hockey The reason why basketball wqill always be popular , itsa because the sport is more accesible and everyone can jump/THrow a Ball/Run while not everyone can skate / Shootapuck and have acces to a hockey ice area. also basketball you can play alone and 1 vs 1 while in hockey its realy more a team based game than a self-centered sport.if you know what i mean.. has for football its quite normal , also more accesible but that the american national sport just like hockey is our national hockey sport here in canada..SInce american its a *warm* Country , Summer sport seem to have more impact in a lot of states( i dont think they play much hockey in florida) .. While hockey is accesible in every province in canada .. since we are a Nordic country and we all know snow THink Russia/R Chek/Finland/Canada .. Every nordic country their sport its hockey .. Also with all the ghetto black d00d violence that american Idolized that does not surprise me. has for the lil teen saying hockey sucks .. he prolly dont know how to skake and shot a puck , so dont take much attention to these FALSE gangsta d00d y0 d00d im jumping and listen to Hot violence gagta rap l333t Edited April 8, 2006 by Fishu

Devilsdude530
Fair enough argument. Anywho, I think it's better to look at teams that share an arena. 1. Philadelphia Flyers - 19,643 (100.7% of Capacity) Sixers -16,381 (78.0% of Capacity) 2. Chicago Bulls - 21,210 (92.7 % of Capacity) Blackhawks - 13,261 (64.7% of Capacity) 3. Toronto Maple Leafs - 19,409 (103.2% of Capacity) Raptors - 16,934 (85.5% of Capacity) 4. Dallas Mavericks - 20,115 (104.8% of Capacity) Stars - 17,791 (96% of Capacity) 5. New York Knicks - 18,898 (95.6% of Capacity) Rangers - 18,139 (99.7% of Capacity) 6. Los Angeles Lakers - 18,666 (99% of Capacity) Kings - 17,849 (96.5% of Capacity) Clippers - 17,252 (90.5% of Capacity) 7. Boston Celtics - 16,703 (85.2% of Capacity) Bruins - 16,214 (87.1% of Capacity) 8. Denver Avalanche - 18,007 (100% of Capacity) Nuggets - 17,080 (89.5% of Capacity) 9. Miami/Florida Heat - 19,946 (101.8% of Capacity) Panthers - 16,045 (83.4% of Capacity) 10. Atlanta Thrashers - 15,353 (82.8%) Hawks - 14,754 (73.8%) 11. New Jersey Nets - 16,722 (83.4%) Devils - 14,021 (73.6%) 12. Washington Wizards - 16,938 (84.7%) Capitals - 13,774 (73.8%) Now Let's Look at Teams that Share a Market: 1. Detroit Pistons - 22,076 (100%) Red Wings - 20,080 (100.1%) 2. Minnesota Wild - 18,576 (102.8%) Timberwolves - 16,184 (87.6%) 3. Phoenix Suns - 17,760 (93.4%) Coyotes - 15,496 (88.6%) 4. Northern California Warriors - 18,248 (95%) Sharks - 16,759 (95.8%) In 9 of those 16 Markets, the NHL Team has a higher capacity.
devilsrule33
Who cares about capacity?. That only matters if people say the Knicks get more people than the Rangers when both sell out almost every night just at Knicks games they can seat more. The Celtics still get more people per game than the Bruins. You show data saying the Sharks have 0.8% more capacity filled than the Warriors but that isn't clear at all because the Warriors still get 2000 more people a game. And the Detroit stats. An extra 0.1% forthe Wings when they both sellout every game. Come on. The Wings might sell more standing room seats. Devilsdude530
I think it's because you can seat more that there is less of a demand. I bet the Rags cold probably sell 1,000 more tickets the way things are going for them.

The Padres outdrew the Red Sox last year. Does that mean the Padres are more popular? Of course not, but they have more seats to sell. njdevil26
nba games have a larger capacity... so you have to look at that too... at the garden vs the rangers- sold out duh canes- 14,723 avs- 14,240 rangers (at the garden) - 18,200 atlanta- 10,880 caps- 16,197 canadiens- 10,124 flyers- 16-015 canucks- 15,061 so ive been pretty good with attendance haha

But in some cases it doesn't work and saying the Wings outdraw the Pistons by 0.1% when they both sellout every game is stupid.
