Yawn. a 30 second google search reveals that Reagen, Bush Sr and Jr all have missed memorial day activities in DC. Apparently it's ok to to go to a fundrasier for your campaign or give a speech in Normandy or some meeting with industrial leaders (for Reagan) but it isn't ok to give an address at Lincoln's cemetery.

More frivolous double standards, much ado about nothing.

And once again instead of seeing how inappropriate it is for the President, during wartime, to skip the ceremony you defend him by pointing out mistakes Republicans did. Change? Sure. How did I know you'd side with the lowest common denominator on this?

I'm not interested in defending him, there is nothing to defend imo. He chose to give his address somewhere other then DC, that not only has precedent I don't see how it's disrespectful at all. I am more interested in pointing out the hypocrisy of the article. Had it been written in such a way that criticized all presidents who opt out of memorial day activities I would have been fine with it, at least it was consistent. But no, the author made BS excuses for republicans and is assailing Obama. It's a hack political propaganda piece, nothing more.

Wow, just like you are making bs excuses for Obama. Maybe you should write for them too.

Just looking for consistency. If they or you for that matter, feel like any president who gives remarks some place other then DC on memorial day is unpatriotic and doesn't support our troops then go right ahead and call them out. Just be even across the board and realize that now 4 of the last 5 presidents have done something similiar. Guess they must all hate America.

Above I said the republicans made mistakes. I think that makes me consistent, just like your blind defense consistency.

I must have missed where you said Reagan was unpatriotic like the article said about Obama. My apologies.

As long as you guys want to keep flinging as much sh!t against the walls to see what sticks I have no problem calling out the hypocrisy and double standards. carry on.

Bush Jr was in Normandy for a special anniversary there. Much different then going home IMO.

Regardless this is one issue that is not criticizable (this from a very conservative poster). It's not at all as if he took the day off to relax, he paid his respects at a National cemetery. He has at least (and hopefully at most) 2 more memorial day opportunities to be present at Arlington.

Like his predecessors, Mr. Obama has expressed deep feelings about the troops in both words and deeds, often with as little fanfare as the presidency allows. Like other presidents, he meets privately with the families of the fallen. He watches developments in the buildup in Afghanistan and the planned drawdown in Iraq.

Unlike other presidents, he paid a middle of the night somber visit to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to witness the return of dead soldiers.

Perhaps the most eloquent statement on Mr. Obama's stand on the military comes from Gold Star Mother Carol Barbieri of Maryland. Her son, Army Specialist and paratrooper Thomas "TJ" Barbieri, was killed in Iraq in 2006.

TJ's brothers Stephen and Matthew were visiting his grave at Arlington on Veterans Day last year when Mr. Obama stopped to pay his respects. He asked about their loved one and expressed his appreciation for the sacrifice.

Responding to e-mailed questions last week, Mrs. Barbieri told me the family was grateful that the president "took the time to honor the memory and sacrifice of TJ, along with those of all of the others laid to rest alongside our son."

She noted it was apparently the first time that any president visited the graves in Arlington's Section 60, the burial place of many troops killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Asked about the president's decision to visit the Illinois cemetery on Memorial Day, Mrs. Barbieri said she and her husband Tom "both feel that there is no exclusivity for bravery and valor."

She noted, "Our heroes are interred all over the nation. The President of the United States should be remembering and honoring the men and women who have fought for this country. It doesn't matter where he does that as long as he never forgets them."

Emphasis mine, but really sobering words. The president chose to pay his respects at another national cemetery not sip mai tai's on a beach. It's a shame that anyone tries to make a political point at the expense of our troops.

He was present at Arlington last year, not that I think it matters where one honors our troops.

It's not different at all actually. Bush Gave a speech at a different site just as Obama was slated to do the same. The fact that he went 'home' the days prior seem irrelevant to me, the man was honoring our troops on Memorial day. There are real issues with actual merit that deserved to be discussed in this country, and this was a distraction from that.

Oh please squish, like discussing this or bringing it up has stopped Obama from addressing the 'real issues'. If this distracted Obama then he's one of the mentally weakest people on the planet.

Of course it hasn't. I am calling a frivolous thread what it is, frivolous. I am saying anyone (reporters, bloggers, posters, analysts, whatever) who bothered writing about this is feeding the distraction machine and just another example of not genuinely caring about discussing issues.
