Elias Sports Bureau
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/news_story.asp?ID=52...726&hubName=nhl Stars interested in Nieuwendyk TSN.ca Staff The Dallas Stars are apparently considering adding another center to their training camp lineup. The Fort-Worth Star-Telegram says Joe Nieuwendyk's agent has had conversations with the Stars about a possible return to the Lone Star State. "I've had conversations with four different teams, and I won't say one way or the other," Rich Curran tells the newspaper. "I'm not suggesting you preclude Dallas necessarily." Curran adds he expects the 36 year old will be with an NHL team when training camp opens later this month. The Toronto Maple Leafs, Detroit Red Wings and New Jersey Devils have also been mentioned as possible destinations for Nieuwendyk, however, it would likely be for less than the $5-million he earned last season. The Stars currently have five centers on their roster: Mike Modano, Jason Arnott, Niko Kapanen, Stu Barnes and Pierre Turgeon, whose future with the team is in doubt after he was placed on waivers earlier this summer. However, he went unclaimed largely due to the fact he still has three years remaining on the contract worth $20.5-million US. The two sides have been unable to reach agreement on a buyout. Nieuwendyk was traded by Dallas to New Jersey in March 2002 alongwith Jamie Langenbrunner in exchange for Arnott. He originally joined the Stars in 1995 as part of a trade for Jarome Iginla. Elias Sports Bureau
Here is the FW S-T version via NJDev in another thread: Stars target center? By Mac Engel Star-Telegram Staff Writer The Stars already have five centers on their roster, but it apparently has not deterred them from seeking a sixth. There is a chance that free agent and former Stars center Joe Nieuwendyk could return. Nieuwendyk's agent, Rich Curran, would neither confirm nor deny the Stars are one of the teams he has been speaking with regarding Nieuwendyk's services. "I've had conversations with four different teams, and I won't say one way or the other," Curran said. "I'm not suggesting you preclude Dallas necessarily." Curran said he believes Nieuwendyk will be with a team when NHL training camps begin around Sept. 12. The Stars begin training camp Sept. 13 in Vail, Colo. The other teams in the mix appear to be the New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings. Devils general manager Lou Lamoriello told The Bergen Record that he is interested in bringing the soon-to-be 37-year-old Nieuwendyk back to New Jersey. It is widely believed that any team interested in signing Nieuwendyk would do so for one season at a greatly reduced price from the $5 million he made last season. Should the Stars add Nieuwendyk, it would mean the roster would have five other centers: Mike Modano, Jason Arnott, Niko Kapanen, Stu Barnes and Pierre Turgeon. The odd man out, however, would likely be Turgeon. The Stars put him on waivers this summer, but no team claimed him. Should the Stars sign Nieuwendyk, Turgeon could likely be sent to the minors in an effort to get him out of Dallas. Nieuwendyk was traded by the Stars with wing Jamie Langenbrunner to the Devils for Arnott on March 19, 2002. Last season in 80 games for the Devils, Nieuwendyk scored 17 goals and added 28 assists. In 17 postseason games for the Stanley Cup champion Devils, Nieuwendyk scored three goals and six assists. He suffered a torn oblique muscle in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals and did not play another game. Traded by the Flames in December 1995 to the Stars for Jarome Iginla, Nieuwendyk enjoyed seven successful seasons in Dallas. In 1999, he won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoffs' most outstanding player while leading the Stars to their only Stanley Cup.
Weekes Head
Well this would be nice for our resident Stars fans on the board, but man I'd be sad to see Nieu leave. However, I do want to see the poor guy get signed, whether it's with the Devils or not. Hey, if it's not New Jersey, then it would be fitting enough to see him go back to Dallas, wouldn't it? Nieuwy25
RD, I agree with you. I'd actually like to see him remain a Devil. I really think that would be the best thing. 2nd choice of course would be for him to come back to Dallas and retire as a Star, which he hoped to do all along. SIGN JOEY! Pepperkorn
I'd be annoyed if he went back to Dallas. I'd just be irritated at what looks like another short sighted move by lou in hindsight. yeah yeah eyah cup cup cup and all but it's just how I'd feel - not saying it's right. I'd just be mildly irked and maybe slightly disheartened. I guess I just like Joe. I guess I only just figured that out...
Elias Sports Bureau
I don't want Joe back in Dallas either. I'm sure the fans there including those I know here would really love it. But MOST of all, I just want this done. I can't believe it's not. I don't know if that's owed to Joe's physical condition or the instability of the league or just the whole Red Wings' clusterf, but this has gone on WAY too long. I can't believe I thought this would be resolved the first month.
peteyvegas
Sorry, PK. It's a gun-slinger business. Especially when you're old and injured.
Pepperkorn
Haha petey -- I just came to terms with that in the other thread. Didn't take me too long huh?
dallasdevil15
I would be annoyed too PK. He kinda got screwed around in Dallas when they traded him. I'm sure he's going to think about that. I would be like "You want me now?!?! ummmmm NO!" I think his family deserves to stay in NJ.
E-Devil
The fact that Nieuwy hasn't already been signed might actually be a good sign for us. Free Agents in the past who are considering leaving New Jersey typically sign a big contract within the first month. Joe is probably giving considerable thought about where he wants to finish his career, Jersey or elsewhere. I am sure that negotiations between Lou and Joe have been on going on and like usual Lou is playing hard ball. I really would like to have Joe back, he brings leadership and can always be relied on to take an important faceoff and this team needed that badly a couple of years ago. In any case no matter where he ends up he still has most Devil fans respect.
zenchic
Well, as a Stars fan and here because of J&J when they were traded and now consider myself a Devs fan too...I don't want Joey to end up anywhere if not in NJ or Dallas..I'd be throwing up everywhere if he goes to any other place..So..what I am saying is..here or Dallas, either way's fine by me..and nice to see he made fans here after his terrible start
Weekes Head
Ahhhhhh zen!! I remember when I made that avatar!!!!!! It's my crappy job of getting rid of his Stars sweater and replacing it with a Devils jersey... Where did you find that?
Tretyak 20
I would really be surprised if Dallas made any kind of solid offer to Nieuwy before the Turgeon situation is dealt with. Honestly, it kinda surprises me that they're rumoured to be interested at all. When you've got four veteran centers and a very good sophomore center, signing Joe Nieuwendyk shouldn't be much of a priority.

Nieuwy25
The reasoning being thrown around is that by signing Joe, it will send a message to PT and his agent that he will not be getting any ice time/will be playing in Utah, etc., etc., unless he agrees to a trade. The other possibility is to trade Arnott, but I really don't think they're looking at that.
Tretyak 20
Good point ESB, Neiuwy certainly is a character player, and Dallas seems to be lacking in that department. It's also always possible that he's switched to a wing, I guess. NJDev25, that sounds like sports reporter reasoning to me - you know, the kind that's far more complicated and makes far less sense than good GM reasoning. If the Star's GM wants to "send a message", he'll do it with a phone.
