Daniel
I wanted to start a separate thread on this subject since the excessive number of pass interference calls has always bothered me, and I am curious to hear other peoples' thoughts. How about making pass interference a 10 or 15 yard penalty rather than a spot foul? I understand it creates an incentive for intentional interference past that, but they have that rule in college and there doesn't seem to be an epidemic of flagrant pass interference. I just hate the fact that a highly subjective call can lead to 30-40 yard gains. It's so bad that it gets to the point where plays are set up to try and draw the PI flag and the first thing a receiver who drops a ball is to plead for a flag. Evidently in high school, the ref can assess another 15 yards if he deems the interference intentional. Give each team one challenge for a PI (or even holding) call per game with a loss of two timeouts, or a 10 yard penalty if the challenging team doesn't have two timeouts remaining, if the challenge is unsuccessful. Teams can challenge virtually everything else, including spots, often when the challenge is over a call that turns out to be inconsequential. Why should they not be able to challenge a bad call that can swing the outcome of a game. Give instructions to the refs to be more vigilant about not calling PI when the ball is uncatchable. CRASHER
It won't happen, the league is convinced offense is "what the fans want" and equals ratings....I'd almost like to see a "minor" for PI (which is what illegal contact or defensive holding is supposed to be) They also need a five yard touching the QB penalty....they can even use the kicker standard and call it "running into the QB" or some crap like that....gifting these offenses 15 yards and free first downs is pathetic Don't even start me on the Ed Reed suspension either..... Everyone wants more offense until your team gets stung with a bad interference call. I actually think that more fans want the refs to get the call right (very few people complain when more plays are made reviewable). There's also plenty of offense in college where pass interference is not a spot foul. I'd rather have a complete no harm no foul rule when it comes to roughing the passer. Even a five yard penalty for touching a QBs helmet is a gift. I do, however, understand the need to be more vigilant when it comes to kickers more because they're in a highly vulnerable position. CRASHER
*i* don't want more offense, unlike most people I'm open about why I watch football, I wanna see the bone-smashing hits and the violence of the game, after all that's why they make the big bucks, hazard pay....but I guess I'm getting old school in my old age.... I feel the same about QBs but its not going away so I'm hoping for a penalty less idiotic.....the problem is the NFL doesn't trust their refs to get a judgement call right so they make the rule black and white and fair play be damned.... Colorado Rockies 1976
I don't want more offense either...like I've said, the game's balance is off, and it's reflected in the Madden-like QB numbers. The TD-to-INT numbers have gotten silly, as have the yards passing. I would be in favor of different levels of PI (15 yards and spot fouls) and roughing/touching the QB call (5 or 15 yards). But that likely never happens, and if they did do it, it would lead to arguing/squabbling/overanalysis for sure.
MantaRay
I hate high scoring games, it diminishes Football. I don't want more offense either, I would rather watch the intense physical chess match offensive stregth vs defensive strength, unstoppable force vs immovable object. Instead of the NFL's design on handicapping the defensive team. If you want offense watch Arena Football.
