just turned the game on...

2 hits now

the rest of the lineup needs to freakin wakeup

Johnny can't carry the team on his own

Including a few pitchers here and there, we have a healthy amount of money coming off the books. And mark my words, they will get younger. They will get younger. Do you think when cashman goes to watch the rays and O's play and NOT notice what youth gives you? it'll happen.

The Orioles are terrible. If that is "what youth gives you" then they can keep it. Getting younger for the sake of getting younger is a poor strategy. If you don't have the players in house (and aside from Jackson the Yankees don't have position player prospects that will be ready to contribute any time soon) why would you force someone who can't do it?

Who said anything about not re-signing any current players? I'd be perfectly fine with [re-signing Damon]

Really? I am happy to let Damon walk. He will be 37 next April and is not a very good OFer or a good enough hitter to be DH. A team with Championship aspirations does not have Gardner and Cabrera in the lineup every day. It just doesn't.

It feels weird to talk about next year this early but I'll chime in with my two cents. I wouldn't mind bring back Damon, especially if they are going to have Jackson on the team. He even talked about how he wants to come back but understands he may not be in the Yankees' plans, however I think he has great value on a one to two year deal as the team transitions with Jackson breaking in. One of Cabrera/Gardner should be the 4th outfielder and I don't see how both of them can be on the roster together. Damon is getting old but is still steady offensively and I can't see him declining to a below average hitter in a one or two year span. Plus his defense in left field has been solid in 2007 and in 2008 where he spent most of the year posting 11.6 UZR/150 and 9 RngR. His numbers this year aren't as good but its still too early on to develop a solid sample size. I wouldn't be surprised if he is a plus defender there again this year and for one or two more years. I'd be comfortable with an outfield of Damon in LF, Jackson in CF, and Swisher in RF, with either Cabrera/Gardner as the fourth outfielder.

This probably doesn't include tonight's game but so far Jackson is off to a solid start in AAA. Through 27 games he has a line of .365/.432/.452/.884. He has 28 strike outs, 11 walks, 7 stolen bases while never being caught. I don't know the numbers but he is in a bit of a slump right now from what I read on River Ave Blues. Hopefully he continues this solid start during the year and can improve his slugging percentage just a bit - he is stil yet to have a home run and only has 5 doubles and 2 triples. Based on the limited amount of information I can find for minor league defensive stats he seems to be doing solid in centerfield too.

I just hope Jackson is the real deal like everyone keeps saying. I'm getting very tired of hearing Mark Newman tell us how "great" all our prospects are when in reality anyone that has a brain knows we aren't producing all these great young players the Yankees like to make us think they are.

I need to see if I can find my game program from a couple of years ago that had the minors breakdown in it. Newman said Hughes has a Clemens like fastball (I have yet to see anything close to that) and Ian Kennedy was a young Greg Maddux (I don't think so) and Jose Tabata was a mini Manny Ramirez (please stop the insanity)

I understand these kids are young (and if Tabata was really a mini Manny we wouldn't have traded him away to get Nady and Marte) but I have yet to see anything close to what Newman thinks he see's in these kids (save for Jackson because I have not seen him play to have a opinion on him yet). I hope to god at the least Jackson is what they are claiming him to be. This team needs a real legit center fielder in the worst way possible. I can live with Melky for now (I have no use for Gardner other then a pinch runner or to lay down a bunt late in the game) but this team needs a true player for center.

If we're talking about next year's Yankees, here's what I want to see as of right now:

1) We need a LF if we let Damon AND Matsui walk. I ain't bothering to look at names until Yanks are done for the year.

2) Move Jorge to DH and sign a full time catcher that can bat respectively at the 7-9 spots and play 140 games. Less so over defensive concerns and more on wear and tear on one of our best switch-hitters. I don't believe Molina is the answer here, as his bat is too weak, but he's acceptable enough if the market sucks.

3) This depends on what happens with the rest of the year...but some area of the bullpen will most likely need to be addressed next year.

4) Let Jackson compete for a roster spot next year. In this scenario, I'm gonna assume he wins the starting job

5) Finally, if you're keeping him, open up contract extension talks with Jeter this offseason. Show him you want him to retire a Yankee.

Projected 2010 lineup:

1) Jackson CF

2) Jeter SS

3) Texeira 1B

4) Rodriguez 3B

5) Posada DH

6) Cano 2B

7) Nady RF

8) Swisher\other LF

9) Molina\other C

Bengie Molina is a free agent. Imagine a Molina/Molina catching tandem? haha.

what's run support mean? Kay just said it, I don't think I've ever heard of that before <_<

scoring runs for your pitcher.. ie: the Mets give Santana no run support. <_<

(edit: i apologize if you were being sarcastic, i couldn't tell if you were or weren't :P)

Heh, that'd be awesome. And Bengie looks to have some pretty decent career numbers (.277/.310/.419/.729). Age/games played is a little bit of a concern, but if he stays healthy this year I see no reason why not to entertain contract talks with him next year.

Hes a solid average hitting catcher with some pop but his durability and age are some concerns.

I would not be surprised in the slightest if he's added to the 40 man roster and called up in the dog days for a trial run. Of course that depends on the situation in the standings, but even if its a dead heat I could easily see him up for a couple of series' in August.

I agree for the reasons you said, plus Melky may cool off and not recover well and Gardner may never get going, so if Jackson can keep doing well in AAA I won't be shocked to see the Yankees give him a try.
