Heiskanen yes but it’s a bit of a “fallacy of a predetermined outcome.” If the Devils have Miro they likely don’t draft Nemec. So it’s Heiskanen/Wright or Nico/Nemec and I think that’s kind of a tossup?

2 years ago I think it’s a totally rational thought to say “Heiskanen or Elias would’ve been a better pick.” I let my point of view change when presented with new information. I still probably take Heiskanen and definitely Makar, but Nico is probably 3rd. He’s been stellar so far, really hope he keeps it up.

Ok -- new random trade thought of the day. Leafs are imploding. They need defense badly. Leafs fans think Marner is redundant, since he's a very similar player to Matthews -- big, tall guy who controls the play and lights the lamp. What about Severson, Holtz, Shakir Mukhmadulin and a lottery protected 1st for Marner? Marner has a big cap hit (10.9) but it's only for this year and 2 more years, which gives the Devils the flexibility they need when Luke/Simon/Mercer etc need to be paid. Had the worst starting-half-hour-of-a-party this saturday in the history of the universe. Figured you guys would get a kick out of it so I'll share. My coworker's baby just turned 1. She's one of my good friends and she invited my wife and I to attend her birthday party. Her house is an hour away, and by the time we were pulling up I was about to piss myself. So I quickly go say hi to her and excuse myself to the bathroom. On the way to the bathroom I notice a mobile home parked in their driveway. I've always been curious to see what the inside of a mobile home looks like. For some stupid fvcking reason I do the "shield eyes" thing and press my nose on the glass to look in to satisfy my curiosity, and I stare face to face with my coworker's mother in law, who is changing. I yelp and apologize. Off to a great start. So I go to enter the house through the garage -- I know where the bathroom is, I've been here a bunch. My coworker has a special needs brother who's about our age. He's in between me and the door. He asks if I like handcuffs. I say "yes!" because idk what else to say. He shows me his. Before I can get a word out, he handcuffs me to him. He's laughing and showing everyone. I'm getting desperate and asking someone for a key. Finally my coworker gets the keys from her brother and unlocks us, apologizing to me. Normally no big deal, but I've gotta piss so bad that I'm almost in tears. There has to be a trade or a roster move coming. You don't carry three goalies. You cannot send down Blackwood after how he's bounced back. You can't touch Vanecek after how great he's looked. But you also can't really go 11F 6D 3G, right? That's not sustainable at all.

There is no way in high holy hell that RFA Timo Meier who carries a QO of $10m will cost Holtz, Sharangovich and a 1st. If that’s the package it takes for what should be treated as a rental player, the Devils should steer way, way, way clear.

He had one "ok" year in the COVID season (where he was nearly a point per game). He had one "meh" year before that, 58 points in 70 games. But before that he had a 99 point and an 84 point season, and of course immediately after those years he had his 115 point season. If anything was the outlier, it's his 2019-2020 "meh" season.

I don't understand why you wouldn't want Meier. "If Jack or Nico gets hurt we're screwed" isn't a good answer, unless you're proposing the Devils go out and sign an expensive Center instead? As it stands, they can shift Mercer to center and, if they keep Haula, he's been a productive top-6 center in his career. Meier seems like a perfect fit on Nico's wing. He's got great chemistry with his countryman at the World's, he plays a stellar two-way game, has the hands to bury the puck. And in the Sharks latest Cup run, he showed the ability to be a "playoff player". He was great at getting in the dirty areas, and had 15 points in 20 games.

In terms of the value, I do think Kaprizov is a good comp. He obviously had more production than Bratt (159 points in 136 games, and was coming off of a near-50 goal season). They'll also be the same age (Bratt a few months younger). If Kaprizov got 5/45 (9m AAV), I wonder if the Devils offer Bratt 6/50 (8.3m AAV). That lets them stagger his contract expiry to be right in between Nico and Jack, and keeps the main pieces of this forward core all signed for a long, long time.
