Hard to be positive here, but the defense wasn't as porous as against DET. Going getting the GA down to 2 this game is a small positive. Schmid can at least look at this game as a confidence builder.

Woah, hold on now. Shootout stats are super flukey, basically a coin toss every attempt. The goalie does not hold an advantage of any kind in a 1v1 situation. He is at the shooters mercy every time and essentially is getting the second move in a chess match. There's a reason why teams would rather commit a penalty than allowing a skilled player to be 1v1 against their goalie. It happens in virtually every game with the level of speed the game is at. Schmid does need to make some saves here tho I agree.

Pretty spot on assessment by Haula. It's difficult to give the media the long quote on a struggling team. Hopefully DET was rock-bottom. We need team defense or this whole this is gonna come crashing down. The question is if it comes crashing down, does Fitz alter expectations and call it a blown season and try to run it back next year? Fitz has been so patient before and it's paid off.

True, but I don't think Quick's former team LA was horrible defensively and he struggled mightily in the last few years there. So I guess what I am saying it could be an anomaly, but it could be a resurgence too, just never know until you play them a lot (like playoff level workload) and they rise to the occasion.

Spoiled is a good word for it. Remember tho, there was a long stretch at the end where everyone on this board was begging the staff to just play Corey Schneider for 55-60 games and play Marty for 22-27. Goalies ebb and flow and are weird. Look at Markstrom in CGY. Vezina level year and can't get the magic to come back 2 years later. I think Markstrom is further proof that the goalie stats tend to reflect how well the defense in front of them is playing. It's incredibly difficult when goalies are riding the team hot streaks when the team gets hot and then you can find goalies playing very well on bad teams too, but then the goalies cant get their numbers up.

Every team pulls the goalie early, doesn't matter if its Torts, Laviolette, DeBoer, or Cronin. A huge amount of ENG against just means that you are playing from behind too much late in games and aren't coming back. I would argue it's a symptom and not the illness itself. Still more work to be done. At the end of the day, I think we'd all take Thursdays 3rd period over today's 3rd period. Need to play a full 60 and settle into consistent team defense. I think the leaders on this team know that the solutions are within the locker room per the post-game. It really sucks, but it's encouraging. Jack's back and looked great. I'm all for holding up on Zadorov until the deadline. If we take a major long-term injury to a key defenseman like Marino or Hammy, then I would try and pull the trigger and try to get the salary to work sooner, but there's no rush imho. The reason there's no rush is because PIT, PHI, NYI, and us are all a game or two away from being NHL .500. 2 of those teams will rise and 1 or 2 will definitely drop. I don't know if I expect WSH to keep the pace up either. Being NHL .500 is not a caveat, it's bad.

From the looks of that chart, Siegs and Dougie cratered pretty bad tonight and defense was pretty bad, but I thought Dougie made a few good plays here and there. He intercepted a pass and got it up the neutral zone quick and I think it turned into a goal. Felt they had a better game than that. It was truly a good game and I'm hoping the defense just keeps improving from here. I was in section 117 where Devils attack twice and I heard the Holtzy yell. Pally had a great secondary assist on the Holtzy goal. Wins the puck battle and gets it up the boards to Mercer. More of that please. I was so happy for Holtzy. Whole arena heard the Holtzy yell. Bratter was amazing all game.

He hasn't looked awful.

If the Avs can win with Darcy Kemper and Pavel Francouz or Vegas can win with Adin Hill/Broissoit/Thompson, then I am pretty confident with our goalies. I would argue that Schmid could develop into a better goalie than any of those names mentioned above. They just need to be competent. You don't need a Shesterkin or Vasy to win. That being said, we need more from both tendies and they need more from our defenseman. Team effort.

Again I'll give you the fact that he has been dogsh!t without the puck and defensively all season, but that's all you'll get. I'll even concede and say I do think that he needs to better, and should be one of the better possession drivers all game long, but he hasn't. The team hasn't put together a full 60 minutes in quite a few games and has struggled to put a full 60 minutes together since jack went down.

That is simply not true and you don't have any way to prove that unless you are some insider I never hear about. I'll give you the fact that he hasn't been good defensively all season, but that's all you'll get.
